Enjoyed staying in this hotel for our stay in Havavna, rooms were immaculate and yes it is not to the standard of hotels in Europe but after all this is Cuba!. Loved the sense of history in this place and it was lovely to see all the pics of celebs that have stayed there too. Nice cocktails and a beautiful grand lobby, perfect place to stay in Havavna. Only delay was waiting for an iron to be brought to our room, but it was very busy so understandable.

A great place for budget travelers to give themselves a treat of luxury, Last Saturday I left my modest dwelling in El Vedado to have a few mojitos overlooking the ocean. The staff at the open bar are quite friendly and the service its amazing. Gorgeous Patio to relax while listening to good music coming from every corner of the Hotel. Go ahead treat yourself like a millionaire and enjoy the nicest view in Habana.

I had trouble with key cards not opening, it's a long story, but even the hotel manager was unable to get me back in my room. I know of at least one other person who had the same problem. It was random luck that I got back in at all, they had no back up plan except for me to sleep in another room until whenever they could find a locksmith. It's a beautiful property in a beautiful location, but the internet is expensive & slow. Some people complained their rooms smelled moldy, but mine was fine. Being a Communist country, the service & cleanliness was poor, but that's to be expected. I left two books in my room on accident and went back for them the next day, but they had disappeared, there is no lost & found. Hope they found a good home somewhere!

Room Tip: Be flexible!

Stayed here for six nights to see in the New Year in Havana before moving on to Cayo Levisa and then Los Jazmines in Vinales. Had a superb time in this fantastic hotel, with the memorabilia all around us of those who have stayed here in its glory days. Yes, it's elegance has faded, but I far prefer a hotel to have individuality than be a modern clone. Our room was clean and comfortable (two huge beds) , the bathroom adequate if not exactly pristine, and the air con worked fine. We soaked up the atmosphere (as well as several Mojitos, Daiquiris and Cuba Libres !) in the gardens overlooking the Malecon and on the terrace around one of the pools. We found that it was best to get in early to the buffet for breakfast and dinner, as it did get rather chaotic later. The choice of food was very wide if one took the trouble of walking around to see what was on offer first, as frequently the bread would be at opposite ends of the room to the butter, for instance ! Apart from various dishes gently stewing under heat lamps, there was always 'live chefs' who would cook meat, fish or eggs to order. My wife is vegetarian, and she had little problem in finding something to eat every day - and not just the ubiquitous omelette either ! We had a whale of a time in Havana, and hope to return one day - before Cuba changes to be just like everywhere else. Cuba is individual and (for now) unique. If you want everything to be perfect - just like America or Europe - don't go there !

Avoid this hotel if you have the chance. Perhaps visit it to see some of the famous figures from the fifties etc who have visited and take in its historic atmosphere but then turn round and go and stay elsewhere.

We stayed here before flying home, having had a great introduction to Havana and Cuba with three nights at the Parque Central and then 12 nights in Guardalavaca at the Paradisus. (see other reviews)

We had been told some horror stories by other people we met about the Nacional and it has to be said we also experienced much the same.

Staff were abrupt and rude, the hotel is undergoing restoration which is noisy and intrusive. The buffet breakfast was poor quality, uninspiring and the room itself reminiscent of an airport waiting lounge.

Our room on the eigth floor looking back towards the old town was a surprise as it was actually quite nice (could even forget the single beds) clean, not reeking of cigar/cigarette smoke (as we had been warned) and a well appointed bathroom.

However the rest of the experience was awful and it's location in the 'modern' part of Havana means sight seeing is almost impossible by foot.

We were very disappointed with this hotel and it took the edge off the end of our holiday. So glad we didn't spend the beginning of our holiday here as our tour operator had originally suggested ! Go for the Parque Central so so much better in many ways.

Room Tip: get up as high as you can to avoid noise from various parts of the hotel and grounds

This historic hotel has a lot of atmosphere. In fact, its lobby seemed to me full of ghosts of the famous and not so famous who've passed through the place. The location is special, and there are beautiful gardens and a fine view of the Malecón. The rooms are large but only average. If one wants to sleep in the Havana hotel declared a National Monument in 1998, however, the latest in luxury isn't necessary. The buffet breakfast was very good.

We stayed here with a teen and a toddler. We couldn't get adjoining rooms, but had great sized rooms next door to each other. The rooms are a bit dated, but the hotel has such a wonderful sense of history that I wouldn't let that put you off. We previously stayed at the Parque Central, which is far more luxurious and modern (possibly the only real 5 star hotel in Havana), but it doesn't have half the character of the Nacional. The pool was lovely and the cocktails on the terrace can't be beaten. We also had a suprisingly great meal at the Comedor de Aguiar. Checking in was painfully slow, otherwise I'd highly recommend it.
