Large hotel - aging gracefully. Slow elevators. Double beds in the rooms. Most have views of the ocean. Rooms that face the water are also over the nightly band which plays until midnight. Restaurant buffet for breakfast - lots of food but not very good. At this time - food isn't the reason to go to Cuba (at least if you only go to the public restaurants run by the government). There are private restaurants (paladars) - ask and some are listed in guidebooks.
    1. Understand that virtually everyone is a govt employee
    2. foreign currency must be exchanged for CUC (foreign peso). 1 CUC = 25 Cuban pesos. Consider that a physician or professor or researcher may make around 400 - 500 cuban pesos a month. Tipping 1 CUC is equivalent to more than a professional makes in one day. You may find that the private taxi drivers are retired or former professionals who make more money through tips. You will find notes from the cleaning staff - they are seeking tips at the end of the stay - supplements their low wages.
    3. Shopping is limited and be aware of US customs restrictions on bringing back anything that does not fit in tot he categories of information, DVD, music, books. The hotel shop has limited items available.

Room Tip: rooms facing the water will be over the evening music that blares until midnight

This impressive and historic hotel is lovely, with a decor out of the past. The public areas (the only areas I saw) were beautifully kept up. But take care with their show - we paid a high CUC charge to enter and see the show, sat down, and were handed a menu for dinner and drinks. When asked repeatedly (in English and in Spanish) if the dinner was included with the show, we were told yes. At the end of the show we were presented with a bill that caused us to pay another high CUC charge for our dinners.

Room Tip: We didn't stay here.

I stayed here in Dec 2011 - a large imposing hotel with a lot of history. The rooms are basic but have good flat screen TVs and inexpensive mini-bars. The garden is lovely with peacocks wandering around. The breakfast buffet offers a great selection as well. I didn't go to any of the restaurants though as they were quite expensive compared to the trendier restaurants in Havana.

Room Tip: you can look on their website to see which rooms famous people have stayed in and request them.

The hotel reeks of the past. The fact that the rooms are simple (but clean) and the mechanical systems (plumbing, electrical and a/c) temperrmental reveals how few improvements have been done to the hotel. But that also means that the floors are original, the tile work gorgeous and the outside veranda the place to hang out. The hotel oozes atmosphere.

Room Tip: Change rooms if your toilet is slow, if the a/c is faulty or if several lights don't function. We did and were satisfied.
