“My 1st but hopefully not the last stay in Cuba”
Reviewed April 12, 2013

I spent two nights with my boyfriend at Sergio's and Miriam's place in March and 2 more nights in April (rest of the trip we were staying in Santiago). The location of the house is great! Harbour and the centre are both near. The rooms were nice and presentable + bathrooms totally fine and clean. The family was warm, kind and helpfull! I recommend having breakfast there, and to try dinner, at least once, as good restaurants are not so easy to find in Cuba. By the tips of the host family I found and bought totally delicious just grinded coffee to take home and in the last evening me and my boyfriend had the best meal/supper during the whole trip at the restaurant Los Nardos, recommended by Sergio.

I just got home from my second trip to Cuba and second stay at Sergio and Myriam’s place. My friend and I, we liked so much this casa particular last time that we even did not consider another place where to stay this time. And again, it was perfect! All the family do their best to make you feel at home and very welcome. If you want to have an insight into a Cuban family life, this is the right place. It is also very well located in the heart of Havana Vieja, a 5 minutes walk from Plaza Vieja. The rooms are very clean and they serve one of the best breakfasts in all Cuba, with fresh bread and fresh fruits that are bought in a local market every morning. Moreover, Sergio has an incredible ability to resolve any problems you might have within less than 30 minutes, and it is very important in a country that is so unpredictable. They will also provide you with all the information you might need about Havana and Cuba in general. I would truly advise this casa particular to everybody who wants to see and feel authentic Havana.

This is a fine place to stay, if location is your main criterion. It's clean and fairly comfortable, and you can come and go as you like.

Unfortunately, we didn't really find that we got much of a casa experience out of it. Sergio seems like a very nice guy, but he wasn't around much; nobody else did much to engage with us. That may have had to do with a language barrier - if you don't speak Spanish, this probably isn't the place for you.

We also found it a little strange that on our final night/morning, both Sergio and Miriam were away, leaving us to deal with a younger family member. That proved a bit problematic when there was a small mix-up on how much we owed. (It was an honest misunderstanding, and was sorted out, but was more awkward than it needed to be.)

This was the only casa we stayed in, so maybe we expected too much, but I was surprised because others seemed to get more out of it. Maybe we caught them at a bad time.

The only good things we liked about this casa were the location and the friendlyness of Sergio.
The negative points were the shabbyness, the cluttered, claustrophobic nature of the appartment, the food smells that permeated the place, the people watching American baseball on TV in the room where we were having breakfast. Also the description of a family home in a colonial style building listed in the write up was economical with the truth. We found it expensive for what was offered.
This was definately the worst casa we stayed in during our trip. We had booked for three nights but could only stick it for one night

Room Tip: If you plan to stay in a location for multiple nights prebook only the first night then find a place...

We stayed at Sergio Y Miriam on two occasions while visiting Havana. This casa particulare is well situated to everything in Vieja and is only ten minutes from all the major squares. The rooms were very clean and the breakfasts were wonderful with fresh fruit and juices and everything else one would expect. We had the apartment for our initial stay which was enough room for four and then one of the bedrooms for our final stay. Both were great. Sergio is also a gold mine of information and will help with anything he can including picking up bus tickets, arranging taxis and just plain common sense advice as to vacationing in Cuba. Though Havana looks like it has been through a war that included most residential neighbourhoods we always felt safe, at any hour, and the Habanos were always friendly and polite.

Sergio and Miriam could not have been kinder or more helpful. My husband's and my room was clean and pleasant. At breakfast we were served the best coffee of our entire time in Cuba (and plenty of it). Sergio arranged completely reliable taxis. Most important: due to a booking mixup elsewhere, we needed spaces at the last minute for 7 other members of our group! Sergio and Miriam efficiently and pleasantly arranged it all in half an hour! You couldn't stay in a better place.

Room Tip: Our room's balcony overlooked the street. Somewhat noisy, but also great views of day-to-day li...
