“I would regret not visiting MLG”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2014

Just finished reading my notes:
Prices - 2x the rest of Cuba
Hotel surroundings - unfinished/ partially under construction, but the hut area was nice
Beach - rocky, but sand is nice almost white. The beaches near the road to MLG are much nicer and you can park your car there and camp - that is for free and you are like 20m from the ocean.
After 4pm medium waves, water not very warm, water too sandy for snorkeling.
Beautiful sunset.
Morning - different story. Nice clear water, perfect for snorkeling or diving. Nice place for sunbathing. Nice long beach, with beach bar and great drinks.
Before going to sleep its necessary to apply mosquito repellent.
Internet is available at the reception for a fee.

Summary:
Very nice place - most probably the best diving location in Cuba. I would regret if I did not go there.
If you do not dive, do at least snorkeling - the biosphere is beautiful even for snorkelers there. The beach is nice but the entry into ocean is without rocks only near the diving center. Prices are double the ones from the rest of the Cuba (maybe except Varadero ;)

“The Dive Center gets 5 stars”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2014

I read a lot of bad stuff about this Dive Center but don't know why.
The people working at the Dive Center know their stuff and are very friendly and helpful. On our first dive they took it super easy to see how we are doing as we haven't been diving in a year. Very responsible, I've seen them doing that with others too. We got a 5 dive package for 200 CUC (Ex gear) and when we decided to get one more they only charged us the difference to a 6 package not the full 35 CUC (which is cheap). The gear was good. The only thing I noticed was that they had to exchange the o-ring on mine tank - well if that's the worst you are lucky.
Oh and the dive spots were great.

“Nature in Maria la Gorda really worthwhile”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 11, 2013 via mobile

A place at the end of the world that we reached in a beautiful old taxi in 3,5 hours from Vinales. Returning to Havana we took a modern minibus and it took us 4 hours to drive from Maria la Gorda to Havana with comfortable car and aircondition.
Hotel has both wooden huts in the forest (which I found very comfortable and nice) with a wood path, and 2-floored concrete buildings directly on the beach which I found ugly and uncomfortable (no real windows, small rooms, many people sharing the buildings and therefore noisy and little shelter from others).
No village but there is a little shop, a nice bar which serves quite good lunch and a restaurant with buffet where also breakfast is served for the hotel guests.
Diving: there is a diving basis which has rather good equipment, tours leave at 8.30, 11 and 15h. Book at hotel reception. Diving instructors were ok and did not take risks but were rather unpersonal and kind of bored, did not show any animals or particular things, just went on a “hike” through the reef and we followed. But the water is amazingly clear and the reef just incredible, really worthwhile.
Take a trip to the nearby Guanahacabibes National Park and Biosphere reserve: nothing organized by the park but if you find a taxi you can ask the driver to take you there and around (you do need a car and a tour guid in the park). Tour guides join you upon appointment (ask the hotel desk to call them) and are very well instructed, can show you all importan things and tell you about the backgrounds.
Animals to be seen: in the hotel forest with the wooden huts we saw hutias (nice harmless rodents, like gigantic guinea pigs with a long tail), lots of crabs, some birds. Beaches full of corals, nice snorkeling in front of the hotel. Superb diving on the reef and the “wall” which falls off 1000m!
In the National Park you can see the smallest bird of the world, the bee hummingbird (easy to be seen because it sits on tree tops but it is very small obviously). Red crabs migrate in thousands when it rains in March and April, cars can hardly avoid them and you see tons of smashed crabs along the road. Huge iguanas and hutias

“a lot of nothing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2013

Food was really poor, but what was worse were the dozen or more cats begging at the tables. They were bold enough to reach up onto the tables and the staff were feeding them! This is a National Park, with an incredible bird population - not for long! Beach was pretty, but not near as nice as others. It was rocky rather than nice and sandy. There is really nothing else here except diving. You won't get Cuban culture or people. Water was turned off early in the morning. Not worth the long drive to get there. It felt like it wanted to be a resort hotel, but was trying in a very half-assed way.

“Little Europe”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2013

Maria la Gorda may be a part of the Island, but it is definitely not Cuba. The diving might be good, but personally I do not visit a foreign country to be with people who are from everywhere but - especially when they were generally a bunch of stuck-up snobs. The food is typically bad, as far as Cuba goes-for about 3 times the price. The staff are good, despite the people they have to deal with.
