Owner description: This pilgrimage site, strewn with gifts, from tokens of miracle cures to baseballs, has stood the test of time and of the anti-religious fervor of the ruling Communists.

“christmas mass at cobre”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

I visited the caridad del cobre church on chrismtas day 2012.
the church seems to attract a number of visitors, both religious and non religious, as it really is quite interesting.
just 20 km outside santiago de cuba, this church is home to the patron of cuba.

“A Place in the Cuban Heart. Santiago de Cuba Province.”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

La Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre is revered by an enormous number of Cubans...even those who are not particularly religious will have a statue or image of her in their homes. If they can make the pilgrimage to Cobre, so much the better.

Cobre is a couple of miles off the main highway west of Santiago de Cuba on the way to Contramaestre. The road is lined with stands selling sunflowers and statues of the Virgin as you get closer and then winds around the hill to a parking lot behind the cathedral. This looks over the valley to the copper mine on the hills and the small town of Cobre below. There is also a visitor center there with a restaurant and cafe on the ground floor.
