“Well maintained small scale hotel”
Reviewed April 9, 2011

I can't confirm the previous reviewer's statement that this is the best hotel on Bonaire, as I have not myself stayed in any other hotels on the island. But I can compare it to the many hotels in other places that I've visited, and what makes this hotel stand out is that the building and the garden surrounding the building (including a small salt water pool) are tastefully decorated and very well maintained. The rooms are not luxurious, but the garden and pool definately could compete with much more luxurious resorts (not in size but in style), which gives you a nice holiday feeling while you're in and around the hotel. The owner is talkative and enthousiastic, but fortunately not in an intrusive manner, and in any case she is only there during the morning (the reception is closed at other times, but there is a phone number for emergencies and Kralendijk is a small place).

The hotel has pool view rooms and "windy side" rooms, which are slightly cheaper. The view on the windy side is less nice, and towards another hotel. These rooms do indeed have the benefit of a constant breeze, but as temperatures on Bonaire remain quite high during the night you will most likely end up sleeping with the windows closed and the aircon on in any case. And here comes my only criticism for this hotel: the aircon is placed in such a position that the bed is right in the cold airflow. Using the settings of the aircon in a clever way will allow you to reduce this somewhat, but it remains unpleasant if you're sensitive to this.

Breakfast consisted of one roll with ham, cheese, jam, or peanut butter, a cup of yoghurt and/or some fruit, tea/coffee, and orange juice. Nothing to write home about, but it does the job of getting you on the way. One morning we wanted something more elaborate and walked 5 minutes to the nearest resort. For $15 per person we enjoyed goodies like pancakes and eggs made to order, plus a hot and cold buffet with sea view. Well worth it!

The breakfast is free of charge (you are welcome). You can choose to have breakfast here or anywere else (if you want bacon and eggs) but then you have to pay for it. About the reception hours, it is all on our website. Don't blaim us if you don't read the website.

We stayed at Sonrisa over Christmas. The apartment was clean, spaceous, nicely designed, equiped with high quality appliances, and a working free internet. The managers were very friendly and helpful and made our stay a special one. Bonaire is a beautiful, yet unspoiled, island with plenty opportunities for snorkling, diving and windsurfing. No high rise hotels, instead: free walking donkeys. We explored the island in a pick-up truck rented from Easy-1-rent. Sonrisa is our #1 hotel in Bonaire and we hoop to return soon.

I did book with Sonrisa because of the windsurfing package with The Windsurf Place, but even if I was not a windsurfer, this is definitely the hotel I would stay at.

Jacqueline is amazing. As a long time resident of Bonaire, she knows all the places to go (and not to go), and how to work with the locals to get what you need. Due to her knowledge and resourcefulness, she is able and willing to all she can to ensure you have a fabulous time while in Bonaire.

The breakfast which is included is delicious and huge, kept me going just about all day!

As I was traveling alone, I had the great opportunity to meet many other tourists, the more I learned about the "other" hotels, the more I realized how very special Sonrisa is. Apparently other people are thrilled to get mosquito netting around their beds, but at Sonrisa, this is not a problem as the staff is very conscientious about keeping the mosquitoes out, and I can say that I did not have any problems in my room with any bugs flying or crawling. The rooms are new and with beautiful craftsmanship. Pool is a beautiful sparkling salt water pool, AC excellent, excellent WiFi, beds and pillows comfy, staff friendly, 8 minute walk to downtown, grocery store across the street, fridges, security gate, shuttle to windsurfing beach, 5 minute walk to beach, 5 minutes to airport, walking distance to car rental company ....

Yes, Sonrisa is a great place to stay, but when you add the value of having Jacqueline's helpfulness and expertise about everything Bonaire, Sonrisa is more than just a great place to stay, but you will have access to the best resource available to you while on this wonderful island.

I really would like to recomend this hotel. Nice and cozy... rooms are clean, few minutes to downtown and 15 minutes by car to the best beach of the island. The staff is great! Thanks guys for the wonderfull barbeque night! We really enjoyed our stay there.

Booked the Sonrisa based on reviews on TripAdviser and was not disappointed. Our 9 a.m. flight on DAE was canceled at the last minute, so we did not arrive until 5 p.m. We e-mailed Jacqueline, one of the owners, and there was no problem, even though the office normally is open only from 8 a.m. - noon. The place was right around the corner from the airport and right at the edge of town, which means walking distance to restaurants and shops. A small grocery store and Internet cafe are right around the corner. The water is only another block from there.

The landscaping is beautiful - I love the outdoor walk, the pool deck, the palm trees, and all of the plants and decorations around the pool. I really like pools and there's was nice and I was always the only one in it. As it was slow season, the place had only a few rooms occupied and I almost never saw the other guests. Our room was pool-side. The front porch has a nice table where we ate breakfast every morning. The room was spacious. The bed was comfortable. The A/C blew cold. Nice tile floor and tasteful decoration. What a beautiful, peaceful place. We'd stay there again in a heartbeat.

Perhaps the best part of the place is Jacqueline, the owner. What a great sense of humor and warm, friendly personality. We spoke every morning. She made restaurant recommendations and reservations for us. She told us about the island. She told us her story and how she ended up in Bonaire. What a delightful woman to speak with!

If you don't need a spa or a restaurant or a bar, this is your place. Just peace, quiet, and hospitality. And the morning breakfast was very good - breakfast sandwich on soft wheat bread, yogurt, juice, and, on two morning, Festival cookies! We will definitely stay at the Sonrisa on our next visit.

I have been to Bonaire 13 times and I just returned from a stay at Sonrisa. I have rented windsurfing equipment at Bonaire Windsurf Place all of these years and Sonrisa is run by Roger who is also a parnter at the Windsurf Place. They offer great package deals and shuttle service to the windsurf beach...but you don't have to be a windsurfer to stay here. Sonrisa is conveninently located in town so you can walk to the restaurants at night. It is quiet and "oasis like" with a beautiful pool. Everything is new and immaculate. You will not be disappointed.

We stayed here recently with two daughters. The staff couldn't be any friendlier or more welcoming. It is a small hotel close to town with a very nice pool in the front, giving it oasis-type feel. Rooms are European style meaning simple clean lines. Kitchen was well supplied, but we didn't cook. Breakfast was very pleasant with homemade sandwiches (cheese, turkey ham, salami, jam choices), juice, coffee, yogurt with granola, fresh fruit basket. Games & books are available for usage, wireless internet was fine. There is a small grocery store nearby. Downtown pier is accessible by walk/run, but we took the car when out for dinner.
