Last year, on my first visit to Bonaire we tried the newly opened Appetite. We were amazed to find such a jewel of a restaurant in the tropics. We were looking forward to a return visit this year and were hoping they had maintained their culinary standards in a sea of restaurants options in Kralendijk. We were not disappointed. Not only did the chef and staff meet our expectations, they surpassed them. While maintaining a shockingly low fixed price for their Appetite menu, they have clearly been doing their culinary homework. We greedily ordered 6 courses, thinking that the portions would be New York -small. However 3 or 4 plates would leave most people stuffed. At $10.00 per plate it is an amazing bargain. Each plate we had was an inspired combination of local and/or imported flavours presented with innovative sauces and accompaniments. One of my favourite courses was a grilled barracuda steak served with slices of rare veal on top of a bed of creamy risotto, surrounded by perfectly cooked green and white asparagus spears and split grilled shrimp, and drizzled with a lobster caramel sauce. My husband, who ordered more plates than I, enjoyed an interesting combination of sliced rare beef tenderloin, served with a Stilton sauce and served in a crispy raspberry tuile. We enjoyed our first meal so much that we went back on our last night on the island. We enjoyed an alarming number of plates on both nights and there was no duplication of dishes, but just a consistent quality of food, flavours and beautiful presentation. These people are delivering food for the discriminating palate and are not even trying to cater to the throngs of cruise ship visitors that cram this small town during the day. Sorry cruise visitors: this little jewel is only open at night for those of us lucky enough to stick around for dinner. We have eaten at the majority of the restaurants in Bonaire and Appetite is exponentially better than any of the others. We are looking forward to another visit to Bonaire, and a highlight will once again be another visit to Appetite.
