This was our third visit to Bonaire and once again we had a fab time.

The style of diving and quality of the dive sites seems to be unbeatable. Divers looking for large pelagics may be a bit disappointed but if you're looking for quality coral and good fish life with a huge selection of dive sites then you should be very satisfied.

The whole island has a very relaxed nature and to me, Bonaire is not a typical Caribbean island ie there are no hawkers trying to sell t-shirts/necklaces/trips etc etc and although Bonaire is not completely crime-free, apparently they only suffer from petty crime, which means that you feel quite safe there.

Travellers seeking stunning beaches would be deeply disappointed in Bonaire - as there are none! The "beaches" are mainly corally/rocky - which are ideal for divers.

There is a very good selection of restaurants serving quality food on the island. Some of our favourites are Cactus Blue, Mona Lisa, Patagonia, Lion's Den & Rum Runners. Don't expect fast food, especially at Cactus Blue, Mona Lisa & Patagonia. All food is cooked to order, so there may be a wait of up to an hour, but the quality is excellent and definitely worth the wait (and what's the rush? you're on vacation).

Service at the City Cafe in Kralendijk is quite slack and the food pretty average so I wouldn't rush back there.

A dive package holiday (with Barefoot Traveller) is excellent value for money. At Buddy Dive you can dive as many times a day or night as you wish & whenever you want to.

If you do stay at Buddy Dive, don't expect luxury accommodation. It's fairly basic, but clean and comfortable and the self-catering apartments are pretty well equipped. All the staff are friendly and up-beat so the whole atmosphere is great.

Can't wait to get back there.

Booked through Bay Adventures Travel. We really liked our room, aside from no screens on the doors or windows. The mosquitos were horrible and always swarmed in when the doors were opened. The power went out twice when we were there, the worst being the night before we left while we were packing (we were on the red-eye back to Houston Saturday morning). The resort is very convenient for divers, and I highly recommend. The included breakfast was the same every morning, but you did have choices. The bar left much to be desired, but we weren't drinking that much anyway. Don't waste your time eating there for any of the dinner activities (or Lion's Dive). Lunch was OK. Dive operation was good. We also had a truck included in our package, so we also shore dove a lot. Buddy's Drive Through tank fills was fun. Recommended places to eat: Pasabon Pizza, Cappricio, Mona Lisa, Wil's Tropical Grill. Papaya Moon's desserts were great. The diving is convenient and pretty good. We saw a lot of seahorses and frogfish, but after a while, everything was looking the same. All of the shore dives more or less have the same topography, and on the boat dives, the scenery is a little different, but the ocean life is pretty much the same as the shore diving. Honestly, if you aren't a diver, I wouldn't bother coming to this island. We drove and saw the flamencos on the way to Rincon, and got lost, and had an uneventful tour of the island. We saw the salt fields. The shopping is average. Nothing else really to do except dive, so if you don't do that, I would not recommend, but if you are diver and want to come to Bonaire, I would stay here.

Buddy Dive is a 3 star utilitarian dive resort. A little nicer than just a condo, but not the 4 Seasons by any means. The included breakfast is OK by most standards, but gets really boring after 3 days. The room was kind of dingy and a little outdated (also lots of mosquitos). We had dirt and broken tiles in our unit, but it is what it is. We liked our unit because we effectivley had an oceanfront room with our own private "beach" area. This was nice, along with the fact that we were steps from the water. The location tended to overshadow the lacking room quality, and we really liked our stay. The diving is absolultey to die for, and if you're a diver, you won't care if a tile is missing in the room, you are there to dive. The resort's house reef is spectacular, and makes for great diving and snorkeling.

We ate out all but two times, and the on site restaurant was not that great, but neither were the off site restaruants. This is Bonaire, not Paris, so keep your hopes & expectations properly low. Overall it was a nice stay, and I will return to Buddy Dive, I just have to remember not to expect 600 count sheets on my lumpy bed. Remember if you came to Bonaire, you came for the diving, so dive, and when you go to Paris, remind yourself there are no world class reefs 20 meters from your doorstep, even if you have a great restaurant next to the hotel. Remember, it's the caribbean, have fun, and dive.

Good: nice dive operation, some friendly and kind staff members, good location (close to all the dive sites, town, etc.), well-equipped kitchenette in unit with lots of utensils.

Not so good: one bedroom unit only had air conditioning in the bedroom;ceiling fan in the living room. The entire unit had a musty/damp smell that seemed to linger-only continual use of the a/c and ceiling fans (even when not in the room) helped a bit.

A nice note on humanity:dive gear is left to dry in a communal room with no lockers. During my stay no one experienced any thefts or problems.

After reading all the negative reviews I was alittle skeptical about how the trip and resort would be. Bed bugs, mosquitos, dirty bathroom. As it turns out I had a very nice trip..
The redeye from Houston getting in at 0545 was kinda tough. Check in was not the smoothest however the staff was very pleasant. It was a rough Saturday. I was with a group of 8 and we were all tired and irritable but we got through the day.
The rooms were nice not fancy. They were designed for divers, tile floors and open showers. The bathrooms weren't AAA but they were adequate. The large livingroom was nice. The bedrooms were small and simple. The A/C worked great . The rooms all had a balcany. Room #108 IS the greatest. #109 isn't bad. Both are near everything.
The vehicle that is assigned to you makes shore diving very easy. I upgraded to 11 boat dives and loved evryone of them. The staff and divemasters are great. Don't expect them to hold your hand. If you have a rapid ascent, don't expect them to risk their life for you. It won't happen. The dive faucility and tank drive thru is vey well run.
The staff and island people are very friendly. The WATER is totally safe to drink. The food is good when you go out. Pricing is ok. The island is very clean. Its to Holland what Hawaii is to the US. Many Holland vacationers.
The negatives.........not many.
I do enjoy All-Inclusive so I missed the unlimited food and beer. If you like walking around town and shopping, forget it. The town is small and the shops very limited. Again, the town is very clean.
For you lonely horny dudes, there is a bar in town with very friendly gals. So I heard!
The island is NOT for casual divers that want to spend much time site seeing. The diving is great. Lots of reefs, color, tropical fish and deep water. Not much current to worry about. This is not drift diving like Cozumel.
I rate it wth Honduras and Cozumel. The diving that is!! Water temp was 82* every day. Humidity wasn't bad. Most of the days there was a moderate wind. This keeps the clouds moving by.
I hope this review helps................Have a good trip.

Good: the dive shop, the diving, the divemasters
Bad: the check in procedure, restaurant service, smelly bathrooms

We stayed with a group of 17 divers.
Arriving on the red-eye from Houston is a bad idea. Tired travelers checking in at 6am with no rooms available and no place to securely store luggage. Our group hung out in the heat and mosquitos for hours because no one was willing to trust that our luggage would magically remain safe sitting out in the open near the check in desk. Eventually we were able to get our rooms and settle in. One of our group had a really bad smell in their bathroom that never went away. The staff did not seem to know what to do about it.
Finally we got our check out dive done and the fun began!
The house reef is excellent and we all enjoyed several dives inlcuding at night, took classes, etc right there. We had our own boat and those dives were great as well. The divemasters were experienced, and watchful without being overly annoying, they almost always pointed great finds throughout the dives (numerous seahorses, drumfish, frogfish, etc.). Some of our group added in a few more dives by signing up on the board and on a couple of occasions we used the drive & dive option. I was not a fan of shore diving - Hilma Hooker and Carpata were extremely rough entries and a few of us ended up battered and bruised. The reefs are in excellent health with tons of small life. We did not see large marine life with the exception of some tarpon on the night dives.
The on site restaurants were expensive and had the worst service! We would wait forever to get food and then the orders would be wrong. The food was not that great and it was overpriced. We experienced excellent service at an excellent value at Pasa Bon Pizza and Bistro Paris close to town.

I would return to Bonaire for the diving but might try out some of the other resorts...

After reading the negative reviews, I was a bit nervous that our favorite dive resort had gone downhill since our last stay in 2006, but we were very pleased with our recent stay. Unit #108 is the best 2 bedroom, 3 bath apartment--close to the dive pier, Bella Vista restaurant, and drive thru fill station, with the best 2nd and 3rd floor balconies and the newly renovated bathrooms on the 3rd floor. I can understand how some people might complain that the outside stairs weren't swept, the sand wasn't raked every day, and the fish pond wasn't pristine like at some 5 star resorts, but we found Buddy Dive to be the perfect dive resort for us, and we will definitely stay there the next time we go back to Bonaire. We love the breakfast buffet, the organized schedule of boat dives, the drive and dive package with the convenient rental truck, the drive thru fill station, convenient rinse tanks, the well stocked dive shop, the helpful and knowledgable dive staff, the Sunday night Creature Features slide show, the Friday night Managers Rum Punch party and BBQ, having the Pool Bar, Lions Den and Rum Runners restaurants, Lovers Ice Cream and the Chat N Browse Internet Cafe within walking distance, and having great reefs within swimming distance.
