We spent 2 weeks at the Plaza. Overall happy. Not sure if I would return to this resort, perhaps.

Pros: Toucan Dive is great on site. We were off season, so most days our boat had 5-8 people. Sweet. Dive masters were friendly. Not as full service as we have experienced in the Pacific, but if you ask for help with anything, from calibrating your nitrox tank to helping you out of the water, they are there. We did 11 days if boat diving, and had lots of fun. One dive master per group, which also was different from the the Pacific. We are used to 2, one in front and one in back.

Pros: you can eat at the hotel restaurant if you want, or walk to Joe's Grill or Sebastians. I would not want to do the all inclusive, which they are going to Nov 1, as here are so many great places to eat in town.

Pros: We reserved an Ocean front grand suite. The room was very large, with lots of storage space. It was the farthest out, away from the dive shop and restaurant, but it was worth it. The view of the ocean was special.

Pros: AC worked like a champ. I am NOT used to humid hot weather, and was grateful the room was comfortable every day.

Just Ok: Buffet at breakfast was just OK.

Of note: There are no racks or hooks on the patio for hanging dive gear. I left most things in my locker, but did want to hang some things to dry, In fact there were very few hooks anywhere, even in the bathrooms.

Problems: OK. We were in room 3010. The 1st day we reported problems flushing the toilet. Someone came over. After a day or two it was not working at all. Mgt offered to move us,but we didn't want to do that. It was Saturday, and it would be Monday before a maintaince person could come. So our soloution was to stay in our room and use the bathroom of the room next door (3011). So for 2 days and nights we had to go outside and into the room across the walkway to use the bathroom. On Monday the repair man shows up, and says the toilet is fatal. We give up and are willing to move to 3009.

By the way to flush the toilet in 3010 required a pull on rope, and then pushing the rope back into the wall. The toilet in 2011 was a handle flush.

Once we moved to 3009 everything was good. Handle flush.

Of the 3 rooms we experienced, we were hard pressed to decide which ones were renovated or not. The flooring was different, the showers and sinks were different, and the floor plans were all different.

Jackie at the front desk helped out, and gave us a voucher for dinner at the Banana Tree for the Beach BBQ which was great. Thanks Jackie.

Con: I checked with Jackie the afternoon before departure about how to do it. She said if you want help with your bags just call the front desk. Great. 5AM pickup for airport. At 4:30AM we started calling the front desk, but it just rang and rang. My friend walked over to the lobby, and called me, saying there is no one at the desk. So we hauled our suitcases and dive gear from our room out to the front which is a good hike. No one in sight. It was now 5AM. We used the phone at the front desk to call security. All very casual, like OK the man who drives the bus isn't coming today, then the security men could not find the keys to the hotel van. We were getting very concerned about getting to the airport. It all ended up OK but our check out from the Plaza should NOT have been so stressful.

Dear mr. Burm, I would like to respond to your review. We're very pleased with your weighed review.

We regret your experience while checking out. Absolutely unacceptable. After knowing what happened, we have confronted the involved employees to make sure this will never happen again.
Besides we understand the toilet problem was inconvenient. Indeed, we tried to solve the problem by providing you a new room. We'll take your review, this particular situation, with us in the head meetings. Thank you for informing us, so we can improve!

Despite the topics mentioned above, we hear your praising words. We do not take anything for granted, so we're very glad you enjoyed the Plaza Resort and Bonaire.

We would like to see you return in Plaza Resort Bonaire!

The plaza beach is a hot spot for diving with a fantastic reef. Snorkeling is outstanding off their beach. The dive shop and the car rent located so convenient right there. Also you can use scuba tank for shore dive for free at any time. The staff is very helpful and friendly. "A picture is worth a thousand words". I'd like to share my clip from Bonaire, its uncanny ability to convey one thousand words, or more )) Most of pictures I took in Plaza Resort Bonaire. There is a link youtube.com/watch?v=x80QLJzjeoU

We lead a large group of divers to Bonaire. Wow. The Plaza was exceptional, the dive shop, Toucan, was professional. We will definitely return again and again. We especially enjoyed the villas, thank you!

I was not peek travel time so it was not crowded. We knew to ask for one of the renovated rooms. It was a delux ocean front suite. Very interesting bathroom. The shower just had one glass wall and was open on both dies so that it did cause a flood when we took a shower. But the room was large and great view. Meals were adequate but nothing too fancy. Although the staff was more than accommodating whenever ewe asked for something special. The dive shop was very good but I think a bit too tolerant of some of the divers. They should have done more reminding to not touch things. Would go back again.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the renovated rooms.

Thank you for your review. We're happy to also gain feedback from low-season travelers. We're glad that you were satisfied with the renovated room, although we take your comment about the bathroom in consideration. Perhaps we could implement your idea for the dive shop, since we take care of original products. Thank you for your trust and we would like to welcome you soon again! Kindest regards, the Plaza team.

Recently spent a week at the Plaza Resort, and my overall experience was good and OK...

We paid extra for the Deluxe Ocean Front Suite. I'm glad we took the upgrade. We had a huge very clean room, and an interesting bathroom. Our view of the ocean was nice... but the Tiki Bar did obstruct our view a little... The standard rooms were definitely not as nice... I went into a friends room, and it was dark and dingy looking... plus.. they had a mosquito problem. Ugh!

We had the all inclusive package, so the food and the alcohol was included. We had an endless supply of Amstel Bright. The evening dinners were excellent. The food was good an plentiful. Breakfast was a standard breakfast. Eggs cooked to order... and a good variety of fruits and cereals. Lunch on the other hand was a buffet style, and the variety was lacking. The servers during lunch... well.. it was easier to go to the bar and get your own water, tea, or beer. You could order from the menu, but... again... getting the server's attention could be a challenge.

We did have a pleasant dive staff. The dive master and boat captains were great. They took us to where we wanted to go, and let us dive our profiles. Great crew. The dive shop on the other hand was limited. I had to replace the battery in my computer's transmitter, and they didn't have the tools (small phillips head) and wrench to pull it apart. I had to go to Buddies to get the battery replaced.

Would I go there again? Probably not. Too many better places on Bonaire to go to.

Room Tip: Get the deluxe ocean front suite

Thank you for reviewing Plaza Resort Bonaire. Exciting to hear of your positive experiences, although we are not pleased. We hear lots of improvement points which we deal with currently, since we are renovating the whole resort. These comments help us in improving the resort facilities. We're glad you're taking us into your positive experience of the all-inclusive package, as from November '13 we'll go completely all-inclusive. Thank you for your trust in our hotel, the Plaza Team.

To start out, my first room had rat droppings in the middle of the bed when I arrived - moved my room yuk! They only provided a few small lockers (most of the group had to take out things to the room each night because there weren't enough spaces). Also they provided no place to hang gear to dry before storing. We had to haul our nitrox tanks out ourselves each day and had to take care of all our gear at the end of each dive. When I am on vacation, I expect better service than this. We had a 'dive master in training' and he just took us in a straight line and then returned on the same line every dive, then hopped on the boat and did not do a roll call. Luckily we all knew each other and made sure no one was left behind.

Dear miss, very disappointing to read your comments. Though, we heared that in contrast with your experience your diving group had a blast in our resort. We regret what happened, but acted directly during your stay and tried to solve the problems. We would like to see you and your dive group return to Plaza soon. Kindest regards, Team Plaza.

As from november this year this resort can only be booked ALL INCLUSIVE.
Plaza Resort Bonaire is a part of the Dutch Van Der Valk Hotel's.
Van der Valk tried to sell this property but they failed to do so, due to the economical crisis. Now they decided to modernise the complex. Indeed it needs some maintenance due to neglect, but it is getting better. To attract enough customers for this large complex, Van der Valk offers low prices in comparison to the other Hotels on the Island. Not very luxerious, but fair enough. It is a 3,5 star hotel, not a 5 star. It is very close to the airport, but you hardly notice that. Nice entertainment if you like carribean music! Friendly staff.
Bonaire is a nice place to visit in the colder months januari, februari, march. Would not go there in October/November because of the rainy season. If you have bad luck you will have 5 days of heavy rain a week. Off course, you can get Lucky and only have one day of rain. But I would not take the risk. The centre of Kralendijk is a 15-20 minutes walk from the hotel. It is also nice to rent a bike, the south of Bonaire is flat and therefore it is easy to cycle.

Room Tip: The rooms without sea-view are MUCH CHEAPER and just as good.
