“My stay at the Divi Flamingo Resort”
Reviewed June 13, 2014

The hotel itself is a little "tired", but adequate. Because my main focus of this vacation was diving I was okay with the accommodations. Beds were made every day, bathroom given a "once over", adequate.

We had a seaside room, it was nice to have morning coffee on the patio.

The first day of diving was quite disappointing. I know that the first of two dives was a "check out" dive, but all the same "lack of color", lack of "fishes", etc.

But to be perfectly fair, the diving did improve and did have some wonderful dives.

For our weeks stay we were assigned two dive masters, Enrique and Orlander, both very accomplished divers. Enrique made sure everyone was on task and Orlander was always the last one on the boat.

Breakfast was included in our weeks stay, and there was certainly something for everyone.

Room Tip: Breakfast was included in our diving package, and there was certainly enough of a variety to choose...

We went with a group from Island Hoppers Nashville and had a great time. While the resort looked like it had seen better days, the rooms were clean, comfortable and spacious. The diving was tremendous. The DMs (Luis and Ruud) were friendly, funny and quick to point out hard to find fish. Since most of us were experienced divers, they did not baby us and relied on us to set up our gear. The diving operation was smooth and well organized. We went to different site on each dive. Air and Nitrox were available 24-7 as part of our dive package. The food at the restaurants was good, but not exceptional, particularly if you are a vegetarian (like my fiancé). She got a massage and said it was awesome and at a reasonable cost.

The Divi Resort is located just a five minute walk out of the downtown area of Bonaire, with lots of restaurants nearby. The rooms are comfortable although a little worn. But the location and amenities make up for any deficiencies in the room. For snorkelers and divers, there is a dive shop on premises that will arrange reasonably priced outings on their numerous dive boats that go out daily. Woodwind Snorkel Tours also leaves from the Divi resort, with a fantastic snorkel trip to Kleine Bonaire. There is some good snorkeling right off shore right at the resort. There are lounge chairs set all along the coast for some peaceful time on the shore. We sat and watch the sea light up at night with bioluminescent organisms. The food at the restaurants on the site is good for those not wanting to venture out. The only negative experience we had was with the person who works at their activities desk who told us that a tour we wanted to take was booked for our entire time in Bonaire. We went online and learned it was available and complained to hotel management who were receptive and said they would take some action.

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your comments on Trip Advisor. We are so happy that you enjoyed your stay, dining, our location, and the snorkeling. I appreciate you coming to see me regarding the miss-communication with our Activities Desk. We have spoken to the owner of the Woodwind as well as our Activities coordinator and have since corrected our booking process. I again apologize for the error on our part, and promise you that this will not happen again. We are very happy that you enjoyed your time on the woodwind in spite of the booking issue and hope to see you back at Divi and on the Woodwind again very soon.

Thank you again for choosing to stay at Divi Flamingo.

Just finished a week of diving at Divi Flamingo and it was our first time to Bonaire. Room was, as other reviewers suggested, a little outdated with wear and tear showing (e.g, drawers coming apart and handles lose and the bathroom a little dingy). However, for us divers it is within the norm for resorts/hotels that caters to divers. Externally, the resort grounds were well kept and security was very visible.

We had breakfast buffet (included in our dive package) and a la carte lunch at the resort most days. Large portions for lunch always tasted freshly prepared and reasonably priced. Service was good. Happy hour at the beach bar between 6 and 7 with two-for-the-price-of-one on selective drinks got a bit crowded on a few nights and they could have done with few more temporary bartenders. I noticed that some of the guests had to wait quite a bit for a drink, unless they spoke Dutch. Ultimately, I think the bar was nor staffed by bartenders but by staff with other duties.

I thought the dive operation was great. Very well organized from start to finish. They expect you to go through orientation on the first morning so don't expect to start a morning boat diving on the first day. You could do a single tank boat dive (60 min) in the afternoon on the day of orientation. Staggered on-time boat departures in the morning were great as they avoided confusion and crowding on the dock. Short boat dives to the dive sites were a plus.

I read a few complaints about the DM's but I disagree. The ones assigned to us performed very well; however, don't expect them to set up your equipment or guide you under water. Some dive operations work like that, others do not. Remember that these are not drift dives where guides are a must; it's out (against very slight current) and back (with the current). Here, they expect you to dive within their limits so if you are an adventurous diver, you should probably rent a truck and go shore diving using your own profile. Morning dives were always 45 min, 70 feet max depth on the first dive and 45 min, 50 feet max depth on the second dive. You spend half the time at the deeper depth before you head for the shallows (20-30 feet) and back to the boat, and because you dive with the same dive plan, you end up diving as an unorganized group by default.

If you are a beginner diver, this place (Divi and Bonaire, in general) is great...easy navigation, shallow dives, and lots of small fish to look at. Listening to other divers, it was clear that many (maybe even the majority) of them were return customers. I wish the DM's were equipped and allowed to kill lion fish (invasive species) because we found some on every dive. Lockers were assigned on the first day close to the boats (bring your own lock), and had ample room to hang up your equipment for the night. Shore diving on the property is included on boat dive days. Make sure you do some night dives from their dock. You end up seeing a lot of interesting stuff and different things than you will during the day. Full tanks are ready for you on the dock, easy entry/exit, simple to navigate, and close to drop-off. It is pretty much impossible to get lost. You can easily squeeze in 4-5 dives a day between boat dives and dock dives, if you are so inclined.

So overall, I think the dive operation was great and the resort average. As I diver, I can live with that.

We went to Divi as a very large group of divers from Nashville. The resort was very attentive to our needs and easily handled our big group . The housekeeping was good and the rooms were very comfortable..The boat diving was great! Laurel and Rofino tried to take us to any requested site. The shore night diving in front of the resort was awesome. There was always something to see. It was so convienent to gear up at your locker and just jump in.

I cannot overstate how great the dive operation is here. We lucked out getting a boat with Max and Ebby who were amazing dive masters who helped us all find all of the creatures we were looking for including seahorses, octopus, and turtles. I started the trip with only five previous dives under my belt and 16 dives later feel super comfortable diving. They took care to pay close attention to the divers with less experience and I felt safe every step of the way. They also took our requests into consideration and took us to the dive sites we most wanted to visit.

The hotel was fine, our room was clean, but not luxurious. However we didn't pay for luxury accommodations, so we were pleased with everything. The service in the restaurant was a little slow but it's that way everywhere on the island. We ate at two of the theme buffet nights - taco night and pasta night and found the food decent and affordable.

I would for sure return to this dive resort again as there are many dive locations we didn't have a chance to get to on our week long trip. The friendly and professional service from Serge and his crew is definitely worth choosing Divi Flamingo over other resorts on the island.

Room Tip: We stayed in an ocean front room which was nice, but next time we would just save money and get a ro...

I had a great time at the Divi. The ocean view was amazing!!!! The room was clean and I felt very safe. Housekeeping was very attentive. The staff was very helpful/friendly, I couldn't ask for more - very relaxing. The restaurant was great, I ate there several days. You can snorkel right off the dock. It is a quick and easy walk into town. I would stay there again in a heart beat!

Room Tip: Ocean view is beautiful!
