I traveled solo to Bonaire over the Holidays with really one essential need: stop trying to kite and become a kiter. That should suggest my expectations for this adventure were pretty high and my review would be critical. If you want the executive summary, here it is: Go to Kiteboard Bonaire, you will learn to kite.
For the details read on. I did hours of research to find a great spot that was a good value. Criteria I considered: warm water, flat water, lots of sun, predictably steady winds, good gear, certified instructors, friendly people, ease of travel to and from and island life feel. Let me save you the time, this is Kiteboard Bonaire.
The couple places I tried to learn before had onshore winds, so the practice was short lived since I was constantly being blown ashore and walking back to the launch site. KBB has solved this problem. They have offshore wind and instructors follow you in a boat! This is incredibly helpful. Add the radio helmet and a great instructor (Bas), who honestly understands each students unique needs to help him/her be successful and you have the perfect environment - A lot of water for practice, timely instructions in your ear and the safety of a boat right there with you. I was just one of many students that left KBB able to independently kite (Upwind!). In fact, the last session of my vacation saw Bas kiting with me and another one of his students he had taught to ride upwind. If that doesn’t tell you that KBB has great resources and teachers to get you independent and ripping up and down the coast, I don’t know what will.
After kiting or between sessions the bean bags, hammocks, cold drinks and hospitality of the KBB team create a fabulous spot to chill, siesta, make new friends and arrange dinner or plans for the night. There were even a couple times when everyone stayed at the beach, helped pickup gear and had a sunset day-cap beverage. Just a fantastic beachy, island vibe everywhere you look.
If you are heading to Bonaire and debating lessons, or looking for a cool place to go to learn something really cool from a bunch of really cool people, your next move, without a doubt, should be getting ahold of Roan and Freek at KBB and getting your name in the schedule!
