“beautiful beach setting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2005

just returned from two week stay.can confirm what many people have said.hotel is in a beautiful position with most rooms looking down onto the beach and the most amazing blue ocean.staff are really polite and housekeeping do a great job keeping your room clean and replacing towels regularly.for organised trips see keione at the activities desk, nothing is too much trouble.
if you would like to try geniune bajan food, try the new cheapside market in bridgetown.go upstairs and you will find many food stalls selling a variety of food .dont be afraid to mix with the locals they are very friendly and will help you with the menus.scotties opposite the jungle cafe at the gap is also worth trying.you can buy groceries there, but they also sell cooked bajan food(4$ barbados!!).during the day this is a 10 minute walk via the beach past turtle beach ,through ashort alleyway alongside the dover hotel.(not to be recommended at night!!)
this is our second visit to barbados, and i would say it was even better than our first visit.cant wait to go again.
one report said the gap wasnt very lively.we thought that on our first visit.all i will say is,try staying out after midnight and you will see a different side to the gap.

Myself and my husband have just returned from 10 days at the Bougainvillea Resort. It was our first visit to Barbados and we had the best holiday ever!

The hotel is clean, we had a delux studio overlooking the pool area. We had fresh towels every day, even if we did not request them. An added bonus was receiving beach towels every day. The staff were friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel is excellent, the beach is gorgeous. We didn't really make use of the hotel pools, but I imagine if you have kids, they would love them.

Lanterns by the Sea and Waters Edge restaurants are situated on site. We ate at both and preferred Waters Edge as it had more choice. We ate in St Lawrence Gap a couple of nights - Pisces and Champers which were both excellent. We were also lucky enough to get a reservation at The Cliff, the famous restaurant on the west coast, which was a lovely experience.

We hired a car for 3 days and saw Harrions Caves, the wildlife resort (where we got up close to Bajan Green Monkeys - amazing!), we visited the West Coast beaches where the waters are a little calmer, and went on a Tivoli catamaran tour, which was the highlight for us. It was our first time snorkelling, and we got to see huge turtles, fish, a coral reef and a shipwreck. Visiting brdgetown is also a must for duty free shopiing, although the hot weather made this a little uncomfortable.

We loved every aspect of Barbados, the people were very friendly. Beach vendors were a bit of a nuisance but a polite "No thanks" and they left you alone.

I would return to barbados tomorrow, but would try a different hotel just for variety. But I would recommend Bougainvillea without reservation.

We just spent a week at the Bougainville Beach Resort (south shore of Barbados) in Aug. 2005, and highly recommend it. Positives - our 9-year-old daughter loved the two pools - the one with waterfalls was in a lush garden-like setting; the hotel's landscaping is beautiful and well kept; the housekeeping did a great job in cleaning; the Lanterns restaurant on site had great food with average prices (casual setting), and was convenient if you don't want to leave the premises at night; the studio room we got was very spacious with a great ocean view (ask for the Sand Acres side for a quieter location); the staff were polite and helpful (although not overly friendly); there is a small mini-mart right next to the hotel for groceries, and the hotel room had a kitchen with all necessary dishes, pots, etc.; and the hotel is right next to the beach, so we could hear the gentle waves every night (although the whistling frogs at night were a bit loud).

Negatives - no bathtub (only shower), which I am used to getting in the states; shower had drainage problem (but hotel sent someone right away to correct it), air conditioner was inconsistent in working (but again the hotel sent someone right away to fix it); the beach's waves may be a bit rough if you have young children; it was rather hot in August to walk the 15-20 minutes to The Gap for meals, and taxis were rather expensive ($15 U.S. round trip to go to The Gap); most casual restaurants nearby do no have air conditioning (mostly patio dining).

If you take the public bus out of the city (we did twice to the west coast), be ready for a long wait at the bus stops, as they don't apparently keep to a strict schedule. We only stayed a week, and did not rent a car, which would have been more convenient to get to the west and east coasts. We enjoyed the Tiami catamaran snorkeling trip, although I wished they gave us more time snorkeling over the shipwreck. Being able to touch the sea turtles in the ocean was a highlight for our trip. We also recommend the Williams Tour company for guided island tours. We found the best beach to snorkel with a young child was at the Folkstone Marine Park. Otherwise, if you like seeing lots of fish by snorkeling, the best way is to go to the reefs off the shore on a boat. I would have loved to stay on the west coast where the ocean is calmer, but did not want to pay the high prices.

I am originally from Hawaii, and in comparison, the ocean water off the beaches' shores in Barbados are much warmer and clearer. The beaches were pleasant and not as crowded as we expected, but this may be due to August being the low season. The Gap was not as exciting as we expected, but we compared it to Waikiki, which is much more developed. We talked to many British tourists who visit Barbados regularly. We also talked to Americn tourists who had the same feelings as we did - we weren't used to the food (KFC is the only recognizable restaurant we saw), narrow roads, and local accent of the Barbadians (we even had to listen closely to understand the British accent!). However, the locals appeared friendly and kind-hearted, and we would definitely love to vacation again on this lovely island!

we just returned from barbados. bougainvillea is located on one of the nicer beaches on the island. generally, the beaches are narrow and short on barbados but maxwell beach is wider and longer than most. waves are good for body surfing and ok for swimming. the water is divine - warm and relaxing. the pool and common areas are cramped; the pools are especially small and unwelcoming. staff is friendly. food is overpriced and mediocre. it's located near the gap but there is nothing in the gap except restaurants. we expected a "nightlife scene" there but its overrated as a place to go for a walk after dinner. this hotel is a good choice if you will be on the beach, don't mind a mid-range level of finish and are price sensitive. lots of kids there. very nice mix of guests.

This was our 2nd trip to Barbados and our first stay at Bougainvillea. I did a lot of research when deciding where to stay this time. I was a little nervous after reading some of the reviews. I was not disappointed.

Upon arrival, we were greeted with our choice of complimentary tropcial drinks (2 fresh fruit, 1 rum punch). The staff were very courteous, friendly and helpful...always greeted us with a smile and remembered our names. Our room was comfortable and cleaned daily. There was only 1 day when we had to ask (repeatedly) for clean towels. Our room was on the ground level with a patio view of the sea and one of the pools. At first this was quite a treat. It was no longer a treat when at 7:30 in the morning there were people in the pool making an enormous amount of noise. When I went out to the patio to see what was happening, I discovered a father and small child playing with pool noodles. He apologized and promised to keep the noise down. (He did for the most part.) There were A LOT of children at this resort, even in the "adult" swim up bar. I was disappointed that management did not enforce the 16 years and up only rule. The swim up bar was something I looked forward to. (I soon got over it!)

We found the restaurant food and drinks to be over priced for what was served. I did not find any of the mixed drinks to be worth 12 Barbados dollars. We found a nice bar down the street from the resort...Thomo's Loved the malibu and sprite! Very friendly staff (Rosie was a riot!) Karaoke night was a ton of fun! A nice, relaxing place to unwind.

The beach front was decent, but rough on several days. Most of the umbrella tables were long gone by the time we arrived (around 9-9:30). I'm not complaining since the beach was only 20 steps from our patio! Vendors approach you trying to sell their wares. A simple "No, thank you" will send them on their way. We never had any trouble. They would simply smile back and wish us a happy holiday.

Oisten's is definitely worth the trip. Great food in the gap and at Leroy's right outside the resort. I ate a different kind of fish every night and was never disappointed.

We went horseback riding on the East coast and it was wonderful. Take a trip to North Point, where the Caribbean and Atlantic meet. It is breathtaking! Snorkel with sea turtles and see beautiful fish.

One regret I have is using the travel advisor that came as part of our package. She greeted us the second day we were there and assured us that she was the only one who could book our tours. (WRONG!) She took money as deposit but then did not book all of our excursions. Then when questioned, she was hesitant about returning our money. Thankfully the resort staff was understanding and did everything they could to book our excursions.

To make a long story short, Bougainvillea is a nice, family resort with friendly staff, decent amenities and is within close proximity to St. Lawrence Gap. (We took a taxi but found it quite expensive. Take the "bus" which costs $1.50 Barbadian each way. It's always an event!) I would go back to Barbados tomorrow. I probably would stay at another resort, just because I like variety. I would recommend to friends, though.

If you would like additional information, please send me an email. I am happy to share!

soon after arrival it became apparent that the staff would go out of their way to help you.rooms were very clean and tidy. the housekeeping was excellent, the pools were good and clean, and the location on the beach was first class. the pool bar was very good and you could have some decent banter with the staff. food at the hotel was good too, especially at the a la carte at the adjacent sand acres.

We stayed for 2 weeks at the Bouganvillia Beach Resort, Barbados. at the end of May 05. Looking at the reviews on this site I had a few mixed feelings...however when we got there it was great!! We rented a one bedroomed deluxe apartment, for ourselves and our two children aged 3, and 7. The apartment was very spacious, clean comfortable with a lovely ocean view.

The resort is ideal, right on the beach which is glorious, beautiful colours in the sea, water warm, sometimes a little choppy and you need to take care of very young ones, but my son aged 7 really enjoyed the body boards that you could get free from the water sport guys.

The pool area also ideal for children and you can go freely from beach to pool with ease.

The staff at the resort were fantastic, helpful and very child friendly. We did a mix of eating in and going out. St Lawrence Gap is not far and has some great restuaraunts, really enjoyed Pisces and the kids liked Sweet Potato and the Jam Rock Cafe. Oistins on a Friday night is another must do, great local food and loud music, lots of atmosphere!!!

We also discovered Leroys Island Dinners which are available Mon-Fri from his white van, parked outside our hotel at lunchtime. The food was fantastic and great value. My son particularly enjoyed the chicken rotis and my daughter loved the selection of different types of fresh fruit jiuce you could get.

Travelling further a field is also a must do. We hired a jeep and went to Holetown on the west coast. The beaches are pristine and a lot clamer for swimming, Take a boat trip to swim with the giant green turtles!!!

Unfortunately my husband broke his shouldor whilst we were on holiday. The hotel couldn`t have helped us any more. They were fantastic and all the health facilities were fine as well. Moral of the tale do make sure you have holiday insurance.

Despite the mishap we had a great time, really loved the island and the people, the managers and staff at Bouganvilla were great, we`d definitely recommend it!!!
