“Beautiful beach, friendly staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 5, 2014

We just returned from 7 days in paradise. The beach is beautiful though the water at times was rough. If the beach is too rough, one can always use the pool that was kept clean.

One pool for adults only has a swim up bar.

We had a Junior Suite that had a microwave, fridge, hot plate, sofa, table for 2 for dining on the inside and a table for 4 for dining outside, and flat screen TV. There was also a lounger outside also.

For those who would like to have a light meal in the room, there is a supermarket not too far from the hotel where you could pick up fruit, cereal, eggs, milk, bread, lunch meat, and more.

One can have a buffet breakfast or order off the menu every day at Lantern's with eggs cooked to order, fruit, yogurt, toast, English, pastries, jams, jellies, a meat selection, really good Bajan coffee and more. Service is friendly.

We started out in room 5215 and moved to 5419 after one night because there was a crying baby. I'd say 5419 was a bit fresher in appearance than 5215, but both were nice and comfortable.

One might want to rent a car to visit sites and restaurants.

Water's Edge at the hotel is a Tapas restaurant. The food was OK and service left a bit to be desired.

In our opinion the best restaurant was Champers. Make a reservation in advance of your arrival as we weren't able to get a reservation until our 5th night on Barbados. The restaurant is located on a small cliff at waters edge. The sound of the waves added to the dining experience. You could taxi to this restaurant reasonably. We drove.

Next best was Waterside that is located on the water in St. Lawrence Gap. Taxi 10BBD each way ($5 US each way). You could park in the Pablo's parking lot for 10 BBD. Have a drink or dinner at Pablo's and your parking would be free.

Harlequin, though not on the water in St. Lawrence Gap was quite good too. Taxi 10 BBD each way ($5 US each way).

We dined twice at Café Luna (Little Arches Hotel) that is reasonably priced and has a view of the water. Reservations in advance are a must. The only time for sushi is Thursday and Friday.

Disappointing and not worth the ride is L'Azure at The Crane Resort. Pictures make the restaurant appear to be on the water. This is not true. Service was not as good as at the above restaurants, the menu items limited, and a bit pricey for what you get...how about a stale role to start the meal?

For a historic visit to a plantation (dates back to 1658) and wine tasting take a ride out to St. Nicholas Abbey in St. Peter's Parish.

For something out on the water, we went out on the Elegance catamaran that carries only 14 people. One of the snorkel stops takes you over some old wrecks and at the other you see turtles. The third stop is for lunch and serves a really nice Bajan lunch and you can swim. The Captain and crew were fun. Pickup at your hotel, lunch, and open bar is included - $100 US per person.

This hotel is really lovely, great location on the beach and lovely grounds, we had a beachfront apartment for our family of 5 and it was lovely, fresh decor combined with Carribean style and two balconies looking over the sand and the sea. The beach was great, the sea, although not tranquil was fun for all the family. We loved Barbados and we loved the bougainvillea and will definitely go back. We ate in Lanterns most days and found it to be simple, but tasty food, when we ate out we went to St Lawrence Gap where the isle to of choice and its only five mins away by taxi. We were worried about prices as everyone said it would be expensive. We found it fairly compatible to UK prices really. We travelled with three kids 11, 10 and 4 and they all loved it, lots of pool time and a few of Jose and Roxanne's non alcoholic cocktails! If you are thinking of coming here, do it, you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: We loved our beachfront villa, but looking at the resort, I suspect most rooms have a sea view.

Just returned from our 6th visit to the Bougainvillea Beach Resort. It just gets better every year. The ambience is perfect. The hotel combines superb service with a lovely casual style. The staff are friendly and tend to stay, so you see familiar faces every year. The rooms are spacious ,well equipped and kept spotlessly cleaned daily by a team of angels! The food is fairly basic Bajan cuisine but based on good quality ,fresh, local ingredients (the restaurants have improved in recent years). The gardeners work tirelessly to keep the tropical blooms looking good. The pool area is clean and safe for children, elderly or anyone with differing ability,The hotel is right on the beach,so great for body-boarding , water-sports and walking. The hotel is great value compared to others. I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: East side of the resort is older and less comfortable. Very close to the sea which can be noisy at n...

We just spent a week at this property at the end of our cruise. From our arrival the impression was very good, the staff were helpful and friendly and the gardens leading down to the beach are stunning. We had a Junior suite on the ground floor with a lovely view out to the gardens and the white sandy beach. The towels were changed every couple of days and the room cleaned daily. We had a small kitchen, so if I were to stay there again I wouldn't bother with the breakfast ~ it was OK but nothing to write home about and the coffee was poor, we could easily have eaten as well in the room. One complaint is the nonsense of people getting up at the crack of dawn to put towels out and then disappearing for hours. The management ask you not to do it but they don't enforce. It is a bit out on a limb but there are shuttle buses you can book to Bridgetown and Oistins and a local bus service stops about 300 metres away. With 20:20 hindsight if we go again, which I hope we will, we will hire a car for part of the time at least. All in all a very relaxing stay at a lovely complex.

Room Tip: Room 5126 is great for anyone with limited mobility as it is just a couple of steps from the beach.

After thirteen years in a row visiting the Bougainvillea, one would expect to read a glowing review otherwise why would we keep going back? You would be right - we just returned from another perfect stay at the Bougainvillea. Thirteen years ago our three boys were small and they still come with us as three young men, it just never gets tired. The property is fabulous, the setting spectacular but most importantly are the great folks working at the Bougainvillea, they genuinely care about making your visit a great one. Be forewarned though, staying here can be habit forming.

We recently made our fourth visit to Barbados, and our third stay at the Bougainvillea Beach Resort. The resort is absolutely beautiful, the staff is soooo friendly, and the location great. The rooms are magnificent with beautiful views. My wife and I have traveled extensively and without hesitation this is the nicest place we have stayed in. Great for couples and families. We have already booked for next year.

Room Tip: We had a room with a full kitchen, a view of the pool, garden, and the caribbean sea on the west sid...

We spent the first two weeks of February at the Bougainvillea, where the relaxation quotient is superbly off the charts. Be advised that this is not the most exciting place you will ever stay -- we barely saw anyone under 40 unless they had very small children in tow -- but that is exactly why the Bougainvillea is so charming. We booked a studio, but were upgraded to a full suite with an ocean-view balcony on the older and quieter east side of the resort where the grounds and beach are the most mellow.

A few helpful things to know...

The resort has two restaurants. The food is fabulous especially if you enjoy meals other than steak, hamburgers, pasta and pizza. If you like seafood as well as spicy Caribbean-flavored pork, chicken and lamb you will be delighted if you eat most of your on-resort meals at the Water's Edge, which is highly recommended over Lanterns. Service at Lanterns can be slow, but the service at Water's Edge is spot on as Ian, the manager, runs a great front-of-the-house and the chef really knows what he is doing.

Lunch is served only at Lanterns -- try the blackened flying fish cutter, which is to die for -- as well as Leroy's lunch van, which parks on the street behind the resort every M-F between noon and 1 p.m. Leroy is a character, and his food is reasonably priced and quite good.

The prize place to dine in nearby St. Lawrence Gap is Apsara Samudra, which serves both Indian and Thai cuisine. While the food is excellent, the ambiance is nothing short of stunning. We travel and dine out frequently. The seaside setting is truly unique and amazingly romantic. Visually, we slot this restaurant in our top five, ever, anywhere. Our dinner here was the best two hours we spent on the island.

In fact, having St. Lawrence Gap so close to the resort is a highlight. During the day, you can safely walk the beach to a public access point that leads to the very quiet road which leads to The Gap. The road is sprinkled with restaurants, bars and shops. At night, walking the beach is not recommended so you have to walk up to the main road before doubling back on the well-lit side road that leads to The Gap. It's a safe 30-minute walk, or you can take a quick cab.

If you like to jog, running into The Gap from the resort and back is about a 3.5 mile loop that in the morning is totally void of traffic except for the very small stretch of main road that has a sidewalk.

The beach at the resort is lovely, but it's beauty lies in how rough the surf is. We experienced six-to-eight-foot waves almost every day, which very loudly crash along the shore and totally kick your butt if you try to swim. Small children and elderly people literally cannot go in the water most times as the surf is just too rough. But the violent surf also makes sitting and reading by the ocean a particularly beautiful experience as the constant whitecaps and thunder of the crashing waves is both magical and visually stunning. Other resorts located along this stretch of beach include the new Sandals as well as Turtle Beach Resort. Both have the same rough sea.

Day tripping around the island is worthwhile. We hooked up with two other resort guests and rented a car with a driver for eight hours. The entire Island is both lush and beautiful. There is a free guidebook and map at the front desk called Barbados in a Nutshell. Thumb through it, pick out a few places, let the driver offer a couple of suggestions, and go. Just make sure Bathsheba Beach along the east coast is on your itinerary. The surf is too rough to swim, but the beach is a true keeper. You won't soon forget the half-hour walk along the shore and its amazing rock formations.

We also took a local bus and spent a full day -- including dinner -- in Holetown, where the beach is very calm and picturesque. For $2 Barbados you can rent a locker at the Folkstone Marine Reserve -- the bus lets you out right in front -- where there is good snorkeling just off shore. Then walk along the entire beach -- both north and south, but especially south. There is a great seaside shack to have lunch to the south below the Mango Bay Resort, as well as calm and beautiful beaches to swim. You can then cold shower back at Folkstone, change your clothes, walk into town, visit the shops, and have dinner and drinks at any number of seaside restaurants.

In short, we loved the Bougainvillea and its surrounding area. It would have been nice if the sea was a little calmer, but that would hardly keep us from returning.

Room Tip: The older, east side of the resort -- known as Sand Acres -- is smaller and quieter.
