Bougainvillea Beach Resort
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 8, 2013 via mobile

This is our second time at Bougainvillea. The Hotel is probably one of the best on the south coast. The rooms are great, spotless, clean and tidy and spacious. Beach area is great but the water can be choppy. Not good for unsupervised children. The staff, especially Roxanne and Sonia in the bar area, are excellent. Friendly, polite and nothing us too much trouble. The only let downs are the food and alcohol prices. The food itself is good but average. It is overpriced for what you get and the menu doesn't seem to change. In the nearby St Lawrence Gap you can eat better and cheaper. The price of alcohol is high too compared to other places. The bar shuts at 10.45pm which is too early so as a result is deserted after 9pm as people have gone elsewhere. Overall a good hotel but beware the prices. Book a meal plan or take plenty cash.

We are happy to know that you enjoyed your stay with us and appreciate that you took the time to post!

With regard to the prices, we wanted to offer an average range as the terms “expensive” and “affordable” can be quite subjective.

At Lanterns by the Sea, we offer continental, a la carte and buffet breakfast with prices ranging from approx. US$10 - US$25 depending on the type of breakfast selected. For lunch the prices range from US$11 – US$23 and a three-course dinner ranges from US$33 - US$60. These prices are comparable to most restaurants of a similar standard on the island.

We are also pleased to advise that very shortly we will be introducing several new menus at Lanterns by the Sea, which will offer exceptional variety. Until then, we do offer daily specials for lunch. For dinner, our a la carte menu is offered three nights per week, our “off the grill” menu twice per week and on Monday and Thursdays, we have our Barbeque Buffet and Caribbean Buffet & Floor Show.

Also, we have just introduced a new summer menu at Water’s Edge Restaurant. This features delicious desserts, 12 fabulous flavours of our homemade ice cream, pizzas, burgers and delicious cocktails. All desserts are under US$10 and cocktails generally range from US$6 – US$11.

We hope that this information has been helpful.

We stayed here for 3 nights due to a cancelled British Airways flight. Although this was a stressful situation for us I felt I had to review this hotel as I was very impressed. The room are actual apartments with kitchen facilities and they are so big right on the beach as well. This hotel has everything you would want. Excellent staff who are only too willing to help you. Leena was lovely and she came over to fix our safe. Donnie and the restaurant staff were so friendly and polite. The staff are an asset to this hotel. Excellent in room information you could even rent dvd and playstations and I have never heard of this before in any hotel. The hotel will even do your shopping if you are self catering. It has a spa and a library and a small guest lounge for late flights where you can get washed and changed before going home. The food was amazing in the Lanterns restaurant. My only regret was that I wished we had booked here instead of the so called 5 star resort that we stayed in for the 10 nights of our holiday.

Stayed in a One Bedroom Deluxe room. Single beds very comfy/ Double beds also available.
Massive living area & kitchen. Excellent patio leading on to the pool. Pool bar staff are excellent. Pool area is spotless. Beach restaurant is so clean well stocked and well ran.
The beach was amazing. White sand turquoise water again so clean. Loads of sun loungers. I would stay here over and over again . 3 Mins drive from The Gap or Oistins . Best location around.

Great clean hotel. Kitchen stocked with what you need to cook. Restaurant on site was okay, not superb. I thought the meals were pricey for what you got. Pool bar was great, Jose is a hoot! Make sure you go at happy hour otherwise expensive too. Over all I would recommend this hotel and probably go back again.

The Bougainvillea Hotel is one that people return to year after year, and I am not surprised. The customer service is exceptional (not unlike much of the island). The rooms are excellent especially the very spacious with panoramic verandas for most of the rooms.
Apart from this there are many other good points about the place. Staff bend over backwards to be helpful. The bar staff are amusing and have a friendly manner – they serve great cocktails. the lovely staff gave us a bottle of champagne and the wonderful manager gave us freely his time to inform us about the Island. The beach is composed of beautiful white sand and there is more than adequate recliners and umbrellas.
This said, its not all good. The location is very poor – it is a considerable distance from other restaurants. Oistins is a good walk away. There is an excellent bus service – larger public buses and smaller mini buses, both are very cheap, so getting around is quite easy and safe. There are some lovely parts of the Island you can visit by bus including the Crane, Bathsheba, Holetown.
Don’t believe the occasional taxi driver who moans about it being unsafe to walk in order to get more rides for the taxi service – and do nothing for the reputation of this wonderful Island.
At Bougainvillea, the sea is, I think, quite dangerous and not for children or those who are not physically strong or weak swimmers.

Back talking about the hotel - it got off to a poor start we arrived at the hotel at 12 midday and could not get in until 3.15pm (the official time for checkin is 4pm). The sink had a fauty plug which remained unfixed, and the unique taps can be painful so suggest you adjust before and after a shower.
There is some wonderful nature to see on the Island including monkeys, giant turtles, humming birds, and mongoose.
There are many lovely restaurants on the Island – we ate at Café Sol
http://www.cafesolbarbados.com/
and, even better, Waterside
http://watersiderest.com/
There are also great bars – Berts Bar where we met some great Americans:
http://www.bertsbarbados.com/
Tiki Bar at AccraBeach
http://www.beachbars.co/
A great way to see the Island is to take the Jeep Safari which is very professional and takes you to the North East of the Island ie Bathsheba and Little Cove etc
http://www.islandsafari.bb/
You are sure to have a fantastic time.

Thank you for your review. Your kind comments, particularly about our staff and our rooms are very much appreciated and it is also great to know that despite the challenge with the tap (for which we do apologise), you had a fantastic time.

Bougainvillea is located on the quiet Maxwell Coast, which is 5 minutes drive from both St. Lawrence Gap and Oistins – two of the most popular areas on the island that together offer a range of dining options. Both hot spots are easily accessible by taxi or by bus, and as you indicated, the latter is very inexpensive at just BD$2/US$1. St. Lawrence Gap can also be accessed during the day by a stroll down the beach; this will take approx. 15 – 20 minutes. We also offer a round-trip shuttle service to Oistins for just US$5 per person on Friday nights.

We understand the views that you expressed regarding sea. However, it is important to note that in June the tides were a bit more lively than usual and they do vary with weather and seasonality. There are times when it won’t be ideal to swim but it is also quite typical to have calm waters, which are great for everyone. The safety of our guests is paramount and for this reason we operate a flag system so that it is clear if at any time conditions are unsuitable. When this happens, our three pools offer a great alternative for water lovers.

Thank you and we hope to see you again in the near future.

To be honest I was a bit disappointed when we arrived as the local area was a bit run down and not what I had imagined. However when you went into the hotel it was very clean and well presented. The restaurant whilst having wonderfully nice staff (Sonia and Roxanne especially) had a very limited choice but was always beautifully cooked and very tasty. The room was a decent size and kept immaculate clean by the cleaners. The pools were a bit small but being on the sea front with gorgeous white sandy beach it was no problem. Due to the location you need to walk about 20 mins to get to St Lawrence Gap where there were a few shops, stalls and good mix of restaurants. Taxi to St Lawrence Gap costs 20 bds (about £7) one way. We always had nice taxi drivers and competition is keen so you may be able to get this cheaper. We ended up finding a great guy called Sheldon who ferried us around at the drop of a hat. Beware the huge waves...wife lost her expensive sun glasses! Great fun but if you have young children you will have to wait for a quiet day! We did go during rainy season so it may be calmer during the rest of the year. Overall, I would go back to Barbados but probably go higher up the West Coast where there were more restaurants etc near by. But I would take most of the staff with me!

I chose to stay at this resort because of the really good reviews. It has really lived up to my expectations and much more! The staff are very friendly and helpful and the hotel has very good security. It's a beautiful resort and just felt like home in an instant. The rooms are lovely, spacious and clean - good cooking facilities provided (eg. full size fridge, working cooker, cutlery, crockery, basically all of the essentials that are required). However, please note that there are two fab restaurants on site - please do not miss out! I have had the pleasure of dining at both restaurants (Waters Edge and Lanterns) the food is superb!! Bougainvillea is ideally situated right on the beach not far from St Lawrence Gap and getting around is quite easy - there is a taxi service available and staff are also on hand to help if you need assistance. I've had a great time here and would thoroughly recommend it!
