The guys were great instructors and I can't think of a gentler place to learn to surf - great experience!

“Amazing Surf Experience”
Reviewed December 28, 2011

We came back to Surf in Barbados for a 2nd time this month and it again was one of the highlights of our trip to Barbados. Three years ago, Jay took us out almost every day of our weeklong stay and he went out of his way to make sure that our experience was top notch. This time, we surfed with Russell (Jay's Dad) and it was the same amazing experience. He put in the extra effort to take us to the break that was the best on each particular day and was honest enough to tell us not to come out one day b/c no spots on the island would be good. Other outfits would have had us show up that day just to make money. These guys are great teachers, but also also are extremely personable and great hosts...even taking us to a locals only fish sandwich spot after surfing. Can't say enough good things about these guys!

“It's All Good”
Reviewed December 22, 2011

Russell taught our 20 and 14 year old to surf in a 2 hour lesson. He was a very good and attentive teacher and the spot is just down the beach from the Hilton Hotel. Highly recommended for a first experience in a safe place to learn to surf. They loved it.

“The best place to take your surfing to the next level!”
Reviewed August 17, 2011

Dread or Dead is a fantastic place to surf whilst on the beautiful island of Barbados, whatever your surfing proficiency. We had surfed a fair bit before but were struggling with progressing to surfing the bigger waves and really looking like we knew what we were doing! We had a two hour lesson with Russell, the owner of DoD, and it was awesome! Russell was not only an excellent teacher but a really cool guy. After a short time he had us popping up on bigger waves right at the crest, riding along the face of the wave (and looking pretty damn cool!) Even with board hire it was very reasonably priced.
Dread or Dead is one of the best surf shops/surf schools that we'd ever been to, it's run by surfers, for surfers. It is a very inclusive, welcoming surf school and I cannot recommend it enough!
I can't wait for my next trip to Barbados so that I can take advantage of the kindness, expertise and friendly attitude of Dread or Dead and Russell. Oh, and use of the jacuzzi and a few beers with the guys in the nearby Fred's Bar!

“russell was a great teacher and went out of his way to give us a lesson!”
Reviewed July 28, 2011

we had originally booked with busey's surf school at first and made an appt online. we received an automated confirmation that the reservation was received. but when we showed up, there was no signs and no one waiting around. we drove back and forth around the meeting place several times and bumped in to russell in his surf van. he offered to give us a lesson on the spot and took us to a different beach with more waves that day. he had extra rash guards for us to borrow and went over the basic safety measures so we wouldn't get hurt. his lessons on not limited to time, he just wants us to learn how to surf the right way. at $75 for a private lesson, its a very reasonable price. he got us standing up in a couple of tries. everytime we paddled back to him, he offered different critiques to improve our technique which was very helpful. and after the lesson, he had some time and took us to this delicious fish sandwich truck nearby. we were also allowed to hang out at the resort in which he had a partnership with. he was an excellent instructor and is super interesting to talk to. made our day in barbados.
