“Nice timeshare”
Reviewed January 12, 2010

We had a great time . Grounds were perfect for a ten year old. Mini golf, basketball ,tennis, and of course the pool.Fantastic beach Elvis is king, just ask for him and he will take good care of you. Rooms are very nice for a timeshare and have every thing you need . I don't know about the food at the Divi . We ate mostly in our room, they have good supermarkets a little pricey but every thing you need . We are regulars at the Bougainvillea but my son finds it boring there ,so we tried something new and liked it .It was one of our better vacations . Also it was very quiet for Christmas and New Years never had to fight for a chair at the beach or the pool .

We stayed at the Divi in mid-December. The property is a bit tired, it could use an update, or as usually happens in the Caribbean, it could use a hurricane to force an update. We stayed in a pool-view suite with a well stocked kitchen. The fridge and stovetop worked great, and all untensils were available, including a blender. The room size was adequate for 2 adults and a child. The bathroom was a bit too small, it was almost difficult to close the WC door while in there. There was also an odd arrangement of doors to get to the sink and the light switch. The shower had almost no water pressure, it may have been a conservation thing, but it was very weak. Plenty of hot water. We had a ground floor room, and I would recommend against it, as the security for the sliding door was incredibly poor--a sliding latch, and a metal stick poked through the 2 doors. The room decor was average. The kitchen floor was chipped and permanently stained, so the floor looked perpetually dirty.

Check in was prompt, even though we arrived at prime arrival time, along with 4 other full planes from the UK. Most front desk employees were very helpful with shopping suggestions and directions to landmarks. We declined any maid service for the 7 nights, but had garbage taken out when ever I saw a maid in the hallway.

The grounds are beautiful, very well maintained. I took a tour with the head landscaper, David, to learn about the tropical plants that grow on the grounds. There is a tennis court that often has some green monkeys hanging around, a basketball net, a mini-golf course, a child's playscape, and several small gazebos and covered areas. The pool was fine, so was the child's pool. In the evenings, the pool was overtaken by a group of 25+ local children who were ridiculously rowdy from about 3pm-close of the pool. We had to leave, as our 4 year old was just plowed over several times. There were 2 adults half-heartedly watching this, it was like a class outing or day care. We just chose to avoid the pool when the group showed up.

We did not eat at the restaurants on the hotel property, since it is a quick walk to the Gap. I know some people complained of a dark and scary walk to the convenience store, but really it was just a fast trek through the property grounds and down the street. All the vendors are non-agressive on the Gap, just tell them no thanks. The beach is decent, with some trees for shade. The building on the beach is horrible, I can't believe they still rent it out.

We vacation to explore our destination, so we had rented a car and spent most of our day away from the property. Our needs were a bed, shower and a fridge, and the Divi satisfied us. If you were just going to sit at the hotel and expect luxury and lots of attention, this is not the place for you. For the price, we are pleased, but would probably not stay here again if we were to return to Barbados unless there were some improvements.

the location is the one and only good thing about the divi. the service was terrible (as others have mentioned, be prepared to wait a considerable length of time to check-in, in spite of arriving after the designated check-in time), the housekeeper literally never cleaned the toilet, and the condo we stayed in was dirty.

we had low expectations, based on previous reviews, but were expecting something merely rundown, not as dumpy as this place. the beach was fantastic, the location to restaurants was great, but you couldn't pay me to stay there again.

Just returned from The Divi Southwinds and I was not really expecting great things having read some of the reviews. However, apart from a lengthy wait to check in 1 3/4 hours , which is not acceptable after a long journey , we all thought it offered great value for money. Our room was spotless, maid service every day, new towels most days, bed linen changed 3 times during our 11 night stay. The kitchen was very well equipped havbing everything you could possibly need on holiday. The staff were all very friendly without being too familiar. The pool was warm and large and pool /beach towels were available on demand. The guys looking after the wonderful beach , were great and always offered to get chairs / beds etc as soon as we arrived.
There was a libary in reception where we could exchange books we had read for new ones and we made good use of that a swe did a lot of reading by the pool.
We didn't eat at the Divi , it was rather expensive but we managed very well , with a mixture of eating in and out at local beach bars and small restaurants, some like Scotties, very inexpensive.

We met several people there who had been returning every year for 20 +years and I think thatspoke for itself,a nd these were mainly US and Canadian citizens who demand more that us Brits in terms of service levels.

I have travelled extensively on business all over the world and I think the Divi compared very favourably with many other hotels I have stayed in world wide.

Barbados is quite a small island, we hired a car for 4 days and even then found it difficult to go somewhere new on the fourth day, so I will not be returning in the near future as I like to see different palces, but other than that, if I could find hotels oferingthe same value for money taht the Divi gave us , I would go back tomorrow !

Just returned from our first trip to Barbados. The positive points of this trip was that the beach and the pool at this hotel were great. We were there off-season, so I'm sure that made a big difference. Nice cocktail hour put on by management on Wednesday night. We took a catameran trip on the Tiami to swim with the turtles and it was an awesome trip. Also took a six hour bus trip around the island on a Johnson tour and that was wonderful as well. We stopped at the Animal Flower Cave on this trip and the entrance to the cave was included, so that was very interesting. The Roots and Rythmns dinner show (conveniently located across the street) was very good as well. Sunsets in Barbados are absolutely beautiful.

The not so positive things about our stay was that the hotel is outdated, old looking and not up to the standards I had been expecting, especially for a DIVI resort. I would consider it a below average hotel. Taking a shower was a challenge, as the water was either to hot to use, or it was cold. Not really anything in the middle, so cold showers became the norm. The satellite reception was horrible and had constant interference. Some stations had video, but no sound. Bedroom TV was missing remote so it needed to be adjusted manually for everything. Food is on the expensive side at the hotel ($16.00 American money for a hamburg and fries at the beach bar). The nice part about the Gap area is that it has a number of restaurants within walking distance, some good and some not so good. Bellini's Italian restaurant was excellent. Having these restaurants so close gave us the option of not renting a car, which would have been somewhat stressful since you are driving on the wrong side of the road as well as having the steering wheel on the opposite side of the car. The roads were busy and narrow and we chose to avoid this. Much of the area looks run down and in need of sprucing up. This part of the island is still pretty much "old Barbados" in my mind and definitely not built up to be the touristy Caribbean as in other areas of the Caribbean. With that said, we adjusted and had a nice vacation, but would not recommend this hotel to a seasoned traveler with high expectations of service and amenities. Definitely not a hotel I would return to because if I were to go back to Barbados, I would definitely try another area and another hotel.

We traveled with clients to Barbados and chose the Divi because of its close proximity to the st. lawrence gap.
Rooms are not clean but adequate in size. Laundry is to be avoided at all cost, returns with holes punched by giant pins and wrongly ironed and folded.
The most disappointing part though was the complete non existence of customer care and the lack of a proper bar ( the only existing one is 300 metres towards the beach and has been cleaned the last time years ago...) and restaurant. It was raining when we looked for a bar and as the entire hotel is uncovered I saw a security guard protecting an employee from the rain with an umbrella. Once he reached the covered area of the reception I asked if he could assist some ladies from our group and he just said that he could not do that and left.
The worst was the night receptionist: We returned about midnight and were looking for water to take to the room (there is no mini bar or complimentary water in the rooms) just to be told that the bar was closed and there was no water. When asking where to get some water I was told to go to the gas station which was down the road across some very dangerous roads and questionable, dark areas. Very dangerous indeed.
There was never an attempt to assist.
The hotel and especially the management have never heard about service or the word hospitality.

Divi Southwinds has a great location in St. Lawrence Gap. It is walking distance to the beach, bars, and restaurants found in the Gap. However, the hotel itself is nothing special.

Check-in didn't take exceedingly long, but it didn't go fast. We talked to one person who had been waiting on their room for 3 hours. Definitely take advantage of the free rum punch (if there is any left!)

We had two one-bedroom units. Both units were average in size, but the unit on the fourth floor seemed a bit larger than the one on the first floor. Both contained furniture that should probably be updated soon. Cleanliness was average for both.

The microwave didn't work in the fourth floor unit and the safe stopped working in that unit mid-way through the week (big problem!). The safe was fixed eventually, but the microwave remained unworking for the duration. The king beds and pull out sofas in both units were extremely uncomfortable. The first floor unit also had a problem with mosquitos. It would have been nice if the maid-service ran more than just once a week (they only do a full maid service on Wednesays) seeing as how there were three of us in the unit on the first floor and the floor got pretty sandy by mid-week.

Moving to the amenities... the pool was large, but there always seemed to be a lot of kids in it during the afternoon. The restaurant was closed for most of the week except one night when they held an event in it. The beach, which was amazing with soft white sand and clear waters, was only a short walk away. At the beach, be sure to talk with Elvis. The chairs are free, but if you want an umbrella you must rent it from him.

The on-site mini-mart was definitely convenient and the gym was also decent, although pretty small. One problem we did have was with the activities center. Almost every time we went in to get pool/beach towels they were out and said there wouldn't be more for quite a while. As there didn't seem to be an exceptional amount of guests staying at the hotel, the towel shortage didn't make much sense. It seems they need to just buy some more towels.

The staff was helpful and accomodating overall; however, there were several occasions where we asked someone to call a cab and ended up having to wait and then go back and ask again before a cab was actually called. Once we were told "ALL cabs are busy now"... which makes no sense seeing as how Barbados is a fairly large island.

It would be helpful if the hotel had a concierge as we had trouble getting directions to several restaurants from the hotel staff and in that nobody seemed particularly knowledgable about what restaurants were still open in the Gap. (Coast, Southsea, Aqua and David's are all closed).

Overall, Divi Southwinds is an average hotel in a great location.. Stay here if you want convenience, but don't come looking for more than an ok place to sleep.
