Divi Southwinds Beach Resort
Reviewed December 31, 2012

Firstly, location is good as its near to bars and restaurants of The Gap.
A huge word of warning! Never accept a room in the annex which is outside of the grounds across the road-these rooms are substandard, poor water supply, damp and generally run down-there is also a issue with noise (from the bars and traffic from road)
In the main resort rooms are very tired and need money spending on them, chipped floor tiles with grubby grouting etc. We had issues with security-the security chain was partially detached, the patio door although looked felt loose and insecure. This was especially an issue as we were on the ground floor.
Wifi in room worked well.

My sister and I loved this hotel.. the location to (grocery) stores and off site restaurants, the pool, the beachside restaurant, the friendly staff. The week we were there the ocean water temperature was 83 degrees and there were turtles swimming under our catamaran cruise. Wonderful way to relax and unwind.. making plans for a return trip nexy year!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the pool get the sun all day.. heats up the room. The AC was broken in our first room a...

I looked carefully at the reviews for this resort and booked it principally because it was on St Lawrence Gap and also was self-catering with restaurant options (don't bother with the restaurants). It is true that the place needs a bit of tender loving care. The furniture is strong and functional but some of it could really do with a lick of paint.

There is a full size kitchen (including a freezer) and, at least in our apartment, the dining table was far too large for the space. I was however impressed with the cutlery, crockery and the fact that there was a full sized knife block with sharp knives (good job the husband behaved himself!). There was a small phial of wash up liquid but I had taken my own plus tea towels and wash cloths.

The bathroom was not to my liking. Clearly at one time the bath was a jet/Jacuzzi bath but no longer used as such and looked very grubby even after a scrub. The plug was difficult to place and the water was tepid at best.

In the ten days we were there only one lift worked which I consider quite poor. There was a programme to replace the mattresses which meant the management hired a giant cherry picker – far too big for the job – to hoist the mattresses onto the balconies of apartments. This resulted in a) a lot of noise b) the gardens and paths being churned up unnecessarily and in the cast of the paths, quite dangerously. The roots of a palm tree had obviously been disturbed and on our last day there one of the trunks fell across two sun beds at the corner of the pool - if anyone had been sitting there they would have been hurt. I reported this immediately and four hours later before we left I checked and the tree trunk was still there.

There is too much intrusion into apartments. Housekeeping going in day to day is good but at least three of the days there were others in the apartment without any explanation. One day housekeeping had been in, we went out and returned later in the afternoon and as I put the key card in the door a maintenance man walked out of the apartment, scaring the life out of me but with no explanation of the reason for him being in there. I think he had replaced the shower head but that is a guess. A little later husband and I were sitting on the couch having a drink when the door knocked and opened and as it opened a shout of “housekeeping” rang out. Husband leapt up (I was in underwear) and told her not to come in.

The second time I was feeling unwell and was resting on the bed – “Housekeeping” knock and enter, waking me up. Bedroom had already been made up.

The last event was when the new mattresses had been delivered although there was no prior communication about this. The mattress was put in the bedroom when we were not there. As we went into the apartment a member of housekeeping came and said she needed to see if the bed was made, there was no mention made of a new mattress. It was only when she went into the bedroom and then out again that we looked and realised what had happened. Then came another housekeeping knock and enter for the bed to be made up (with a duvet and un-ironed duvet cover). This was followed an hour or so later by yet another housekeeping knock and enter whilst I was in the bath. In the end, to preserve our privacy I put the do not disturb notice on the door at all times apart from when clean towels were required. Housekeeping should knock and call, not knock and enter. Rude and impatient.

The positives: good location – lots of drinking and eating places within easy walking distance plus easy access to the taxis used by the locals (called ZRs by the locals and “Reggae Buses” by us). At only two Bajan dollars each way however far you go they are an experience not to be missed!; good kitchen facilities; excellent and clean pool; great beach, not too crowded.
The negatives: On site shop and facilities expensive; a drink at the bar costs much more than other local venues along the gap and attracts a 10% service charge even if you go to the bar to get it yourself and return the empties; poor communication – you should be told if someone other than normal housekeeping is going to be in your apartment plus no communication about anything else i.e. “Manager’s cocktail party” which we discovered is only advertised on a very amateur looking noticeboard and therefore we missed it (Alvin where were you, didn't see you once in ten days!); the glass doors leading to the balcony felt like they were about to fall out of the frame when you pull them back and forth; don't try and pull the curtains or they will fall off the pole!

I am not saying I would not use the resort again as it is convenient for what we wanted to do however it does need to have someone walk around with an objective eye to tidy it up and sharpen it up. All of the resorts and businesses in Barbados are suffering from the recession (we had long conversations about this with friends who are residents there) and if the resort wants to keep attracting visitors it needs to get its act together. If Almond Beach can go under……………

Room Tip: Put a do not disturb notice on your door unless you want people to enter your room willy nilly and d...

I have unfortunately stayed here on several occasions with work, it never gets any better.

The rooms are tired and dirty, rarely is there any hot water in the bathroom, the locks on the balcony seldom are in an operational condition... Questionable security standards.

The staff are equally rude around the resort, from reception to the bar to the restaurant... You get the same surly ignorant attitude and are treated like a personal inconvenience... At least they are consistent!

Hairs and insects in the bed, curtains hanging off the poles.

This place really is truly awful.
Don't waste your money!

We've been staying at the Divi Southwinds for the past 6 years for Christmas and New Year's. It's actually a very nice place to stay if you want a family style vacation.

First, its location is excellent. Barbados is in the Caribbean and has excellent weather. During this time of year you can expect only 1 or 2 days with substantial rain. Barbados has excellent dining and there are almost no casinos (which is good in my opinion). The water is amazing - 80 degrees and clear blue. Sea turtles are often visible in the waves. Divi Southwinds is located in Christ Church, on the Gap - a secondary road populated with restaurants, bars and street food. Dinner is as easy was walking out of the Divi and heading to one of the excellent restaurants nearby. We rarely leave the Gap during our 14 day stay.

Second, the Divi is 3 -star hotel at best. You are not staying there for the luxurious accommodations, but for the value. The units are mostly 1 bedroom, with a sleep sofa and a small kitchenette. It's easy enough to shop at the local grocery stores and cook a lot of meals right in your room. We typically eat breakfast and lunch in our room and do dinner out. The rooms are clean and the staff is pretty accommodating. My only complaint is that the mattresses are rather hard - but I am spoiled with a tempur-pedic mattress at home. There are several "Penthouse" style units on the 5th floor that have the bedrooms upstairs (2 beedrooms). These are much more comfortable if you have more than 4 people in your family. You still get a sleep sofa in the living room.

Third, the beach is amazing. Gentle waves, blue water and white sand. It's a quiet beach with little to no motor craft to spoil the ambiance. We often spend the entire day on the beach - with only a brief break for lunch. The sunsets are not to be missed.

Fourth, if the beach is not your thing, then enjoy the very large pool. It's kept clean and its temperate.

Fifth, the Divi is very reasonably priced. We're now timeshare owners, but the cost is relatively low per night.

The cons of the Divi: Wifi stinks - they keep trying to improve the service, but its just never reliable; the staff is relatively laid back which can mean waiting; never try to check in before 4pm - your room won't be ready; avoid the on-premise restaurant - the food isn't great and there's much better just a block or two away.

In conclusion, if you are seeking a location in Barbados that good for a family vacation, with a great beach and each access to some very good dining, I recommend the Divi Southwinds.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for pool side rooms - you get a view of the ocean.

Rented a Penthouse for our vacation and was very pleased. I enjoyed my stay at Divi and would definitely return. The rooms were clean, neat and beds were comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped but the electric burners on the stove would not stay flat to the surface. The only con is that housekeeping needs to be mindful of the mold build up around the rim of the tub and shower curtain. The day we got there we asked for the shower curtain to be replaced. It never happened. Days later we had to eventually ask a housekeeper to please scrub the shower curtain and tub area which she did. I encountered one rude maintenance employee but he didn't stop the show. The other staff members were very pleasant and friendly.

Room Tip: Pool view rooms are the way to go

I stayed in room 206. Nice room.
I tried the breakfast served in the dining area. The western omlette was ok except for this rubbery cheese used as one of the ingredients. Lots of food available for $40 Bds. The sausage and bacon were not good. Birds keep you company while you eat. Don't go to far or they think it is their turn to eat.

The Internet access is slow at .5 Mb per second down and .2 Mb per second up. That is glacially slow. They use this nomadix system that requires you to log in every time you turn on your device. Sometimes it was not available and you would have to call the front desk for them to call tech support.

Also there is no password recovery or reset.
Also they don't have BlueRay DVD Players.

I also had a broken taped up tv remote with old batteries in it.

Doing a load of laundry with cost $10 Bds.

The kitchen is well stocked with dishes and cutlery. There is an electric stove and small refrigerator. The air conditioning is noisy but keeps the room very cool as you may like.
