“Exceeded our expectations”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

A super holiday with excellent staff, good food and value-for-money. We've been to Barbados before so took the opportunity to relax by the sea and the pool this time. The Club is being upgraded and under new management, so we were told, so the rooms are slowly being refurbished. We had a lovely suite overlooking the gardens which was perfectly adequate for our needs. We may well return.

Room Tip: We preferred the garden rooms rather then the sea fronted ones given the additional premium.

Went to The Club for a week starting 24 Feb. 2013 before a week on the Thomson Destiny.

First of all; many thanks to tripadvisor reviewers for tips which were so useful I will repeat them here!

Reception; we were politely informed that our room would take 20 minutes to be ready but to enjoy our welcome cocktail and afternoon tea in the meantime. It took an hour (barbados time!) but we were treated to a bottle of californian "bubbly" in our room to compensate. The toilet played up one evening and was fixed in half an hour.

Room; I paid extra for an oceanview superior (not a lot!) as I have always wanted a view of the sea.Given a small upgrade to a ground floor room with patio/sunbeds.Room had been refurbished, with flatscreen tv,fridge, new safe and aircon. but they haven't got round to the bathrooms yet and it was a bit basic.Room very clean and kept so throughout week and cleaners friendly.Beachtowels in room on arrival, chageable at watersports centre.A bit worried about mozzies and got a couple of bites; saw others with more bites; garden rooms prob. worse.Fantastic views of sea and sunsets but you've got to be ok with people walking in front of your room and you can't turn the sea off at night to sleep..thank goodness for earplugs.
A mystery; empty sugar packets on the patio...little birds steal them from your room and peck them open...should tidy up afterwards!

Beach; having read tripadvisor, I knew that the beachfront consists of an "artificial beach" with sunbeds built above a small "paddle-able beach" which rapidly becomes coral. This did not put me off because I wanted to snorkel. In the event it was a bit too "choppy" for a novice like me to try.Two minute beach walk to left is the well-known Sandy Lane Beach with the expensive hotel; lovely but entry to sea a bit steep and your feet can get a pebble wash.
In the other direction, towards Holetown,a walk of three mins (?) gets you to a calm, shallow area between two stone arms which was lovely for a swim.Boat-trips accumulate further out as there are sunken wrecks/coral and they feed the fish for tourists. You can get there to snorkel and I enjoyed it, but it's a fair swim!
Many people don't read tripadvisor and weren't aware of the beach situation??

Food; Main restaurant is a "netted" open air area (birds can sneak in) ; buffet breakfast with yummy omelettes/eggs etc. freshly cooked to order (thanks for the tip about the coffee machine located at the side of the restaurant near the stage as the other coffee is pretty dire).
Lunch; buffet with cook to order burgers/hotdogs/fish . Limited choice but we are now addicted to "rice and peas" with freshly cooked fish and salad.husband loved puddings which he said were like school dinners! try the bread pudding, it's lovely.
Dinner; a slot for dinner must be pre-booked but we took the advice of tripadvisor reviewers and booked the whole week in one go .You can also request a table on the beach; availabilty and weather permitting; very romantic.Service varies between buffet/waited service and a beach-barbie on friday.
Enid's; pre-book early and check opening as varies week on week . Gives you a change of venue but take a cardie for the air-con.Food not much different to main restaurant.
p.s. expect to queue at restaurant
p.p.s ; no icecream shown on menu, but waiting staff will get it for you!

Drink; many thanks to Cheryl and the other barstaff for their work!
bbc; baileys,bacardi,banana; smooth and creamy
bajan dream; knocked me out for two hours!
lime daiquiri and pina colada; very refreshing.
Note; water only by glass (small supermarket in opposite shopping mall sells bottles) but tapwater drinkable.
Rum Shack; bar next to Enid's; seems very unutilised but try the rum-tasting in the afternoon!

Entertainment; low key group or solo music and piano bar (didn't go there).Something a bit more lively would be nice.

Watersports Centre; thanks to Rosco, Sylvester and the other for the boat-trips when they could get the boats out (could do with a decent jetty to overcome this).Had two great speedboat trips to sightsee Holetown, including the lovely villa where Simon Cowell apparently stays, a 1.5 hour fishing trip (where's the fish?) and paid £20 each ($60 barbados dollars) for a trip to meet the turtles; it turns out we were the only couple on the trip and we saw 7 turtles!

O.K; the not so good bit. This is a hotel in transition and we were lucky that we had a refurbished room and a realistic view of what we would get for the price paid; this is not a cheap island but it is a reasonable 3* level hotel. There is a shortage of sunbeds and people "book" them early; we were very amused one morning when a tropical storm soaked all the "pre-booked" beds and towels and we sat on our patio watching a procession to the watersports centre to get dry towels.

To conclude; husband went quite sulky when we had to leave to get the cruise !

Rooms were spotless and in keeping with the carribeen theme. Food at breakfast and lunch was great- eggs etc cooked infront of you. Lots of newly weds at the resort. It's situated on a gorgeous beach. Picture perfect!

This was, by far, the best vacation of a lifetime for us. Celebrating our 10th anniversary, the Club and its staff went above and beyond to make our event one that will remain in our memories forever. It isn't often one cries when they leave a vacation destination. Hotel excursions are great. Wonderful walk with Cole Yates. Learned a lot about Barbados, the people, the culture, and Old Town. Cole was more like our own personal guide the entire week. Great asset to the Club. A special thank you to Gerry and Kevin. You two made everything PERFECT!

Room Tip: If available, request ocean view. Most beautiful scenic view in the world.

We have been to this hotel 3 times. It has now changed its name and been redecorated. We were given a lovely ocean view room with a balcony as big as the room. It was very smart. The public areas had also been refreshed. The food was good and the service excellent, much better than previous years. It is true that the hotel beach is tiny but there are two beautiful beaches, one in each direction a short walk away. The only thing I would criticise would be the activities. These were often advertised but did not actually take place. Water aerobics; exercise on the beach and dancing lessons did not materialise on several occasions. A cookery lesson turned out to be a cookery demonstration with no hands on activities and a nature walk was just a walk into Holetown with no reference to Nature. Holetown is only a five minute walk away and is really attractive. There are smart shops and restaurants there and it feels very European and safe. We hired a car for two days and toured the rest of the island which is beautiful. The resort is relatively cheap for St. James so don't expect it to be exclusive but it is very pleasant and the staff make a real effort to please.

Room Tip: Do not book a standard room if you can afford better. Rooms upstairs have nicer views.

Never seen so many reviews with varying opinions before we arrived.
We had a superior ground floor oceanfront suite(ROOM 115).The excellence of the suite was spoilt by a poor bathroom. The grouting around the bath was black and this was reported.Very quickly a young man regrouted all around the bath but when we showered later the fresh grouting was washed away. There were large slimline tv's in the bedroom and lounge but the problem being, despite twice reporting the situation, we still could not get a decent viewing picture.Taking these problems into account we would request this room when we return. .Nearly all the staff were friendly, for some this was very natural but a few were obviously "acting the part".
The Sunset restaurant was efficiently managed and the staff quickly removed dirty plates etc.but the birds were well versed in their tactics and never went hungry or thirsty. The food was varied and good but never excellent
.Enid's restaurant was a good alternative and the personal attention was appreciated. The drinks were readily available but all the cocktails started to taste the same after a time and the white wine was not at all to our liking and we purchased a superior quality wine from the wine list. The grounds were kept immaculate and the small sandy in front was ideal for sunbathing and the walk to the beaches to either side of the hotel was a very pleasant way to shed a few pounds(perhaps ounces).Swimming with the turtles is a must and the boatman Sylvester provided both humour and knowledge.
As long as you have your life insurance in place another must is a ride on the privately owned yellow buses. It cost 2 Barbadian dollars for any journey and the excitement is unforgettable as the driver takes many risks and often go off route to overtake other buses to get the fares onboard.
There are just a few niggles with this hotel but nothing serious enough to stop us returning one day but the World is a big place.!!!

Room Tip: Corner suites are very large and oceanfront rooms are worth the extra cost.

You will have a great time!
OK, I agree with everything ever written about the rooms but a holiday is about more than your room. Right?
Food was very good and the restaurant staff excellent even when there wasn't enough of them to go round. Even the wine gets more palatable the more often you drink it! Enid's made a welcome change from the main restaurant although in my opinion, you wouldn't want to go more than a couple of times. Portions are a bit on the small side.
The sea was quite rough while we were there but the snorkling and swimming from the beach toward Holetown (5mins max. walk) was great.
Entertainment was pleasant. I recommend you try the Piano Bar - from 11.00pm onwards - at least once. Great place to be with new friends.
Here is one more vote against the sunlounger brigade. I am afraid we had to join them in reserving before breakfast otherwise we wouldn't have had anywhere to base ourselves during the day. However, we only reserved 2 not 4-5 at we saw some people do when they wanted both sun and shade. Disgraceful.

Room Tip: If you are not happy with your room - don't accept it! Some ground floor rooms are ok, check in...
