Coral Lane Beach Apartments
Reviewed March 8, 2006

We just returned from one week in Barbados. We had reserved an ocean view suite at the Coral Lane Beach Apartments. We booked through their website. The place (photos) looked very nice online. We were looking forward to our stay here. We arrived late in the evening and we were met by the manager of the property. He brought us up to our room. We were immediately disappointed with our accomodations. Room was small. Not even an alarm clock in the room. Bathroom was very small, the toilet didn't work and after a 6 hour flight we would have loved a hot water shower (even a warm shower would have been fine), except we didn't have any warm/hot water. We let them know about the water problem and when we returned from our tour the next afternoon we did have hot water, but again the next morning we had to take cold showers. At this point we decided to find other accomodations. Another big concern we had was that you need a key to unlock the door from inside in order to exit the building - fire hazard. This door was always locked. Property did not seem very safe. We carried all our camera equipment and all valuables everytime we left the property. No security boxes in the rooms. Rates were reasonable I guess. Next time, I'll be sure to pay a little extra but at least I'll feel like I'm on a real VACATION!

We stayed at Coral Lane Apartments for 10 days. The apartments are ideally located at Paynes Bay close to Hole Town, for exploring the West coast. You are literally a minutes walk from the famous Cliff Restaurant. Holetown & Bridegtown are easily accessible by Bus, for 75cents US per person.
The owners Jeoffrey and Dawn were eager to ensure that the accommodation was maintained to a high standard of cleanliness and repair. Clean spacious studio accommodation, comfortable double bed, with small kitchen area with mini cooker, microwave & fridge, air conditioned with a view of the Carribbean. We had a first floor studio The apartments are located in a quiet neighbourhood behind the Methodist church in Paynes Bay.
Friday night is fish fry at Paynes Bay, just across the road approx USD15 for two. Definately the place to hang out for some local banter. We dined at the Cliff on the recommendation of a friend cost USD270.00. We also enjoyed meals at Tides -USD140, Sassafras - USD100 although the restaurant was quiet the food was excellent. Cafe Indigo which is only open Tues/Thurs evenings was good value nice interior, USD70.At the far end of the beach was a restaurant called Bistro Too located at Settlers Beach Hotel, happy hour from 5-6, we ate here twice food was good and reasonably priced. Lovely beach side location (near Folkstone).
From Paynes Bay you can walk along the beach to Folkstone, a little paddle reqd at times, and a number of stops for refreshments.Low cost lunch option is the sandwich bar in the supermarket in Hole Town, opposite the Scotia Bank, USD3.00 for a large Sub. We would definately recommend these apartments. You will be surprised by the value for money.
We used the beach at The House (the beaches are not private) it is rated by some as the best hotel in Barbados. We enjoyed the same sea, beach and restaurants at a fraction of the cost. We would stay here again.

We stayed at Coral lane apartments for one week in Feb 06' they offer superb value for money for basic west coast accomodation. Situated 100yds from the beach (admittedly crossing a road)within 2 minutes you are strolling along the excellent Paynes Bay beach.

The room was huge and spotlessly clean with queen size bed, SAT Tv, AC and an adequate studio kitchen and bathroom.

The manager and staff are extremely helpful
with any local info or arrangements, they even offer the free loan of a mobile (cell) phone which as local calls within BBDOS are free is very useful.

Although the apartments have full length opening windows with window seats, the effect was not the same as a balcony and this would be our only critiscm - but at around £50 a night for the room who cares in this location.

My wife and I stayed here from 23rd to 31st December 2005 and it cost $600 which is very good value for this part of the island. The apartment is run by "Jeffrey and Dawn" who could not have been more helpful. Paynes beach is on the West side of the island which has calm seas better for swimming than the East which is good for surfing.
The apartment was studio style with a double bed, kitchen and bathroom. On arrival we were very impressed on how clean and well kept the apartment was. We had a view of the sea across the road. Although there is no balcony, the window opens the whole way across and there is a window seat to enjoy the view. Our apartment also had air conditioning which is a big plus in the Carribean and cable TV although the channels are a bit limited! There is a washing machine in the basement which is useful.
The apartment block is located beside the Paynes beach Methodist church which is across the road from a very quiet part of Payne's beach. The swimming here was great and there are many tropical fish if you like snorkelling. A word of caution though...Water skiers and jet skies from further up the beach can come in quite close so it is important to keep watch.
You can hire jet skies, sailing boats etc about 200 yards up the beach. The nearest town is Holetown which is about 2 miles away. There is a good supermarket here if you are self catering. There are also several very good restaurants and bars. To get there you can get a bus from outside the apartment for $1.50 Bajan (75 cents American). These run very regularly and are worth the experience (they play loud Reggae music and go very fast!). Alternatively you can hire a car. Jeffrey arranged a minimoke for us which worked out at $300 American for the week and let us tour the island. It is worth visiting the West of the island to see the cliffs and big waves.
Words of advice:
1)Bring $100 American for a refunded security deposit in the apartment.
2) When you arrive make sure you have either American or Bajan dollars for a taxi from the airport. This should be about $25 American or $50 local currency.Tell the taxi driver to head for the Methodist church at Gap 1, Paynes bay.
3) Watch out for people trying to give you a 1 to 1 conversion between American and Bajan dollars (it's at least 2 to 1!!!)
4) Make sure you have enough local currency for your airport tax when leaving. It was $26 for us but check at the airport as it seems to be variable!!

Overall all an excellent experience and we would go back here again.

Having stayed for the duration of my 2 week holiday at the recently built Coral Lane Apartments situated on the West Coast of the sunny isle Barbados - I'm anticipating going to Barbados again soon - very soon!!!

One of the first things that I immediately noticed was how close it was to the beach, literally, step out of your apartment, and it's less than a 2 minute walk to the beach - breath taking! On my arrival, I was warmly greeted by the owners of the apartments and lent a Barbadian mobile (cell) phone for the duration of my stay and given a little tour etc.

The fairly spacious apartment room itself with modern décor, comprises of the standard amenities including a large TV fitted with cable (not that I had much time to watch that with the beach across the road!), mini fridge, microwave, cooking and washing up facilities, dining area, en-suite toilet and shower, air-conditioning, mosquito netting (if you prefer to open the window), a large window seat and an internet connection – I’m sure I missed a few things out but I’ll add those in my next review of Coral Lane when I visit Barbados again!

I’m quite picky especially when it comes to cleanliness. The corridor was always clean, the colourful door mats regularly changed and the apartment itself spotless except a few grains of my sand dotted here and there after a couple of days of frequenting the beach!!!

Being situated on the West Coast it is 5 mins away from The Cliff restaurant one of the island’s finest restaurants but be warned, it’s a tad expensive! The apartment itself is near a residential area and although the West Coast is renowned for being a tourist area it was nice to be able to mingle with a few Barbadians.

Friday night and Saturday night there is a must have fish fry located across the road at the Paynes Bay Fish Market – I had some lovely steak fish! The nearest convenience shop was the petrol station although there is a nearby supermarket but not really within walking distance.

On the whole, I had a fabulous time in Barbados, my lovely accommodation made it even a nicer time – I can’t wait to go back!

My friend and i stayed at the coral lane beach apartments (which was formally called paynes bay apartments) and we really enjoyed ourselves we i told people that i was staying in st james for a month they thought that i had won the lottery but the apartments were very reasonable even to us and we were students on a very very tight budget.

I would say that it is more like a guest house than apartments we were a bit put off by the outside as it wasnt very inviting and all the locals referred to it as "that ugly white buliding behind the church" (so if you stay there be warned thats the only way taxi drivers will know where to pick you up from) but the inside was still very nice. The rooms were spacious and had a huge TV (cable) small, bathroom, microwave, two ring stove kettle etc. There is a window seat where you can sit and look out onto the beach which was beautiful. Obviously the rooms were very basic but we were still very comfortabel

The Apartments are set on the edge of a small residential area were everyone seemed very friendly, happy and helpful, its actually in paynes bay and the beach is literally just across the road where the sea is lovely and calm. The apartments are also within walking distance from daphnes (Go during happy hour the cocktails are lovely).

A very short bus ride north and you are in holetown which is the closest place for shopping, banking, fast food etc. I would definatley go back there with a group of friends and i would recommend these apartments to couples or groups of friends who would love to stay in St James and are travelling on a budget. As we saw people of all ages staying there. It definately would not be suitable for a family with young children. though.
