“Feel at home at "The House"”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

We arrived at The House in the early afternoon, and were greeted warmly by a personal concierge. She immediately made us feel at home by installing us into deeply cushioned sofas in the lounge which was open to the outdoors both at the front and at the back which led directly to the pool and the beach beyond. We sipped rum punch, and she began to tell us about the property that would be our home for the next five days. The House has no front desk, no bellmen, no line-ups, no request that is impossible. What they do have is staff that is, to a person, there to help you with anything you desire.

As soon as we were ready, she showed us to our suite on the second floor of the three-story building. An oceanfront junior suite (all the ‘rooms’ are all suites), the room was more than adequate with its recent refurbishments that included a wonderful bathroom, fabulous terrace, and breathtaking views of the surf.

But the service was what really impressed us. For us, service is the top priority when we travel. From the included champagne breakfasts, to the dining at their restaurant Daphne’s, to the wonderful beach with a lounge chair and umbrella for everyone, to the fantastic company (most of the guests were British), This Property did not disappoint in any way.

One day as we sat in our comfortable, cushioned lounge chairs, bottles of water that had just been delivered by the beach ambassador, two women approached us (all beaches in Barbados are public). Evidently one of them had stayed in this hotel when it had a former incarnation. She wanted to know if it had been turned into condos. When we told her no, she asked, “It is reasonably priced?”

This is always a difficult question to answer, so we asked, “How would you define reasonable?”

“Under $200 a night,” she replied.

Perhaps not for her, then, but for us it was – because even at the prices (and it is a bit expensive in the high season), the value is truly there. We will return to “The House.”

Room Tip: Oceanfront is the only way to go! On the second or third floor is best -- but remember that there a...

Very friendly luxurious place to stay with friendly "ambassadors" as the staff likes to call themselves. The restaurant beloning to "The House" is very populair on the island. Making reservations especially for dinner most of the days necessary. But absolutely worthwile for dine and wine and again not the least, for its excellent friendly and professional staff. One remark on the negative side though; on the beach works one guy, not beloning to the staff of the hotel, who tries to sell you a trip on his jetski or to see turtles. He, and only he, does this very aggresive and if you refuse, he will get loudly upset and love calling you and your partner names. He does not stop for your entire stay makijng you ratger stay in the hotel garden then at the beach. You will recognize him as a very skinny guy with dreadloks and small beard. Watch out for this guy, he won't stop telling you if you do not spent your money with him, you should leave his Island.

Dear Jean-Paul V

Thank you for your kind review on The House and our Ambassadors who truly enjoyed being at your service. Daphne’s continues to be very popular as it is well known for its fine cuisine and service. We are pleased that you enjoyed your dining experience at Daphne’s and please note that the Daphne’s menu is always available for all guests of The House whether dining on the beach front deck or in the comfort of your room.

Regarding your unfortunate experience on the beach, please accept our sincere apologies. Barbados is known for its charming and friendly people as you have experienced with our Ambassadors. While all beaches in Barbados are public, and whilst this situation is remote, rest assured we are monitoring closely to ensure the safety and comfort of our valued guests.

We sincerely look forward to welcoming you back to your home away from home.

Wonderful hotel, terrific and helpful staff, lovely beach, great champagne breakfasts. A hidden jewel. The recent revamp has lifted the look and feel of the place. Should not say much more about the hotel - need to ensure there is space there the next time we wish to visit!

Room Tip: Avoid the area near the reception. Can get a bit noisy in the evenings.

I am surprised that The House isn't much higher up the rankings for hotels in Barbados as we found it absolutely superb.

The sea view room was fantastic - great size, and waking up to the view every morning was wonderful.

The staff were helpful, the breakfast great. The beach area was nice (it is quite a narrow beach).
The staff regularly brought round water when you were on the beach or at the pool, or you could always pop to the bar if you needed more. Afternoon tea was nice (we only had it once, but most guests partook regularly) and the jet lag massage was very good. Turndown service was great with more water and little treats each evening. The gym was quite small (we were training for a marathon), but you could use the gym at the Tamarind next door and this was more than sufficient.

The location is extremely convenient for some fantastic restaurants. Daphne's is next door, Scarlet's directly opposite, the Cliff just 500m down the road.

We would definitely recommend hiring a car to have a drive round the island, and definitely visit the beaches on the south coast - we loved Miami beach.

We would definitely return to the House.

Room Tip: An upgrade to the sea view rooms really is worth it.

There is really nothing more that I can add to all of the glowing reviews! It is true that The House is just as fabulous this year as it was last year.
Hmmm - the only downside I can see is that when you find a place that has an amazing staff (Joanna Rottenberg and her top notch team), a fabulous beach, a hip vibe (without trying too hard), a great daily complimentary champagne breakfast, interesting and friendly fellow guests, comfy beds etc etc etc you might be sadly disappointed to every want to and check out other places.
For us, this is the best place to just go and chill out for a week. They never disappoint!!!
The only reason in my rating below I give average to value is that it is a little pricey but maybe it was just because we were there over the holiday.

Christmas and New Year at the House has been all we hoped for.
Lovely location, excellent service - staff could not have been more helpful and friendly, lots of quiet times and places..perfect relaxation. A huge thanks to the staff for looking after us so well.

The food comes from Daphne's and we preferred eating at the House rather than at Daphne's - service there very patchy, forgetful staff and disorganised. The food itself was mostly really good. The fish dishes were really enjoyed.

So some lovely candlelit dinners listening to the sea...a perfect romantic setting.
New Year's fireworks were great...the way to see in 2013

We appreciated the little touches from the hotel - the Christmas present and farewell present, the little box of chocolates in the room at night.

We loved it and will be back!
