We stayed at Shades in September 2007 in the first building then again in March 15-29 2009 in the new building.
It had been finished to an excellent standard and exceeded our expectations. The setting of the apartment is beautiful, set amidst the lush tropical garden facing the direction of the setting sun.
If self-catering is your thing then I honestly can't recommend Shades enough! It's paradise in the perfect location!
Even though we were a bit of a nightmare for Jacqui with our constant requests and queries the service provided was fantastic. Jacqui was only ever a phone call away and she went out of her way to sort out any problems quickly or to help us arrange daytrips, meals out, BBQs etc; nothing was too much trouble and we weren't made to feel like a nuisance at all. The level of service provided really sets Shades apart from other self-catering apartments that we've stayed at in Barbados.
I would absolutely recommend Shades to friends.
Jacqui arranged a catamaran trip for us with the Cool Runnings catamaran team which was an excellent day out, perhaps slightly expensive considering neither of us are big drinkers so probably didn't get our money's worth of the free-flowing booze. Also, the trip takes you to swim with the turtles....right back to the beach opposite Shades, which is a bit annoying because then you end up trying to see the turtles among all of the scrabbling of the other day-trippers when you could've just trotted down to the beach (2 minutes from the apartment) in your own time and swam out to see the turtles on your own. But still. laying on the catamaran and cruising along in the sun was loads of fun and they also took us to a great ship wreck and beautiful secluded beach that we'd never found before.
Good and inexpensive restaurants nearby:
Surfside - Holetown, behind the police station. Right on the beach and excellent local food, reasonably priced. Good for dinner or lunch. The steel band on a Sunday night is a must!!! (listen out for ABBA's Dancing Queen! random!) lunch for 2 was about BD$70 and dinner with drinks was about double.
DeVine cafe - Holetown, in the middle of the chattel village gift shops. GREAT for breakfast! They provide the uk newspapers printed from the web and do various excellent breakfasts; American, English, bajan, continental. Breakfast for 2 was about BD$65.
For a smart and more expensive meal out for a special occasion forget the Cliff and head for Calabaza. Be sure to book ahead of time and request a waterfront table. We had three courses and a cocktail each but no wine with dinner and paid about BD$350.”
