We just returned from a glorious week at the Sandpiper, Barbados. The place is perfect for total relaxation. The food was great and the staff was the best. They even gave complimentary sorbet at the beach. This place is upscale and informal. There are almost no Americans there and it is mostly Brits. We had wonderful meals and relaxing entertainment nightly. The grounds were lovely. The only thing that disappointed us was that we are used to large expansive beaches and the beach was a bit confined. After checking out other places we noticed that it was the same everywhere. You do not need a car and you will be in walking distance to anything that you will need in your room. Sheets were changed every other day and the place functions like a family. We even received hugs and kisses when we departed. We are going to return next year despite the horrific US dollar that makes this place pricey. If you want peace and relaxation as well as a layed back atmosphere this is the place to go on vacation.

Selected this hotel on the basis of Trip Advisor reviews and we were not disappointed. It's not cheap, but it delivers for the price - excellent service, beautiful bedroom, really good food - especially breakfast.

An example of the excellent service was that the WiFi internet connection, which was vital for us, was quite weak in our room - ok for emails but not for internet phone calls - and they went to a lot of trouble (and some cost I would guess) to improve it. It didn't do the trick unfortunately - but we could get a strong enough signal in the reception area, which was OK - and the effort made could not be faulted.

Taxis or a hire car are laid on by request very efficiently.

Beach is typical tropical island, well kept, coral sand, comfy loungers, but a little small - could be crowded in high season. Friendly beach bar with nice lunches. There is a small, heated, swimming pool too.

Evenings are elegant (not stuffy but a certain standard of dress is expected) with low key live entertainment - a romantic atmosphere if that is what you are looking for.

All age groups were staying in the hotel while we were there and seemed to be well satisfied.

We'ed go back!

The 'wow factor'. Some places have it, some don't. When we arrived at the Sandpiper, we thought it fell into the latter camp. Yes, it seemed well manicured and friendly enough. But 'wow'? not really. The beach is pretty small and the rooms are fine - bright and airy but nothing special. We also happened to arrive in a week where we felt as though we had stepped onto the set of 'Cocoon - the Caribbean Adventure', as we were the youngest people there by about thirty years. We thought 'OK. no worries. fine, not bad, not stunning'. It took us 24 hours before it hit us. 24 hours before we were going 'wow. what a great place'. Its' the service that really did it for us. And what fantastic service it is - friendly, unassuming, not over the top but on hand for whatever you need and whenever you need it. The food is every bit as good with a menu with just enough variation to keep it interesting. The ambience of the the place just gets to you to (in a good way). Compared to other, more ostentatious places along the west coast of Barbados, the Sandpiper is a breath of fresh air - laid back, not full of itself, easy going like a Caribbean hotel should be but ruthlessly professional where many are not. We loved it. We read, we ate like kings, we waterskied every day, even took tennis lessons from the pro they had laid on free for guests all week.
If you are going to Barbados, we would wholeheartedly recommend The Sandpiper. It may take a few hours but we'll bet you'll be wowed too.

We stayed in the offseason, been to the caribbean many times and have friends in Barbados that recommeded it. Couldnt have been happier, we got there at night, asked about what nearby restaurants might be open--oh but sir, we have a plate of food in the fridge for you'--indeed they did-and it only got better from there. Our son loved the mongoose that frequented the beautiful gardens. Our room was right on the beach, they have a swim platform anchored to a great snorkeling reef, the water is always calm-leeside of the island. You can walk to many other restaurants and bars, right on the beach. The service was impeccable, rooms nothing to write home about but we did have two rooms, which is great with a child. Overall, a superb experience, great food and drinks too. Unless you're looking for a "Grand Hotel" type experience, not the Caribbean type experience, you cant go wrong here.

The ideal in hotel in Barbados. This is a smallish family run hotel in a fantastic West coast location right on the beach within easy walking distance of Holetown. It lacks the brashness and glitz of Sandy Lane but the quality is there. Meals were very good, rooms were spacious and well furnished with lovely balconies or patios. The quality of the staff was perhaps what gave this hotel the edge as the best place we have stayed in Barbados. Nothing was too much trouble. The fact that some of the staff have been there for in excess of 20 years and a good proportion of the guests filling the 47 rooms are repeat customers speaks volumes for the quality of the place. For a great relaxing Carribean holiday I would highly recommend the Sandpiper.

The Sandpiper has a great understated and elegant feel to it. We stayed at the Sandpiper for 4 nights early December and loved it. It was originally our first choice but because of no availability, we stayed at the Colony Club (which was OK but nowhere close to Sandpiper standards) up the road before moving here.

There's a nice personal touch to the whole place. On checkin day, we got there early and our room wasn't ready but the manager came out to greet us and gave us use of the hospitality suite for us to 'freshen up'. Throughout our stay, some of the staff greeted us by our names which was surprising (given that there were quite a few guests in residence ) but nevertheless, nice.

The rooms were decorated nicely, with a tropical colonial feel to it. Every room has a little patio area in the front which is really quite lovely (but beware of mosquitoes, best to bring insect repellent). The only minor complaint is the bath for our room, the shower pressure was unreliable and the bath drained slowly but I wouldn't hold this against the hotel. We could've complained and I'm sure they would've given us another room but we were comfortable there and was happy to put up with the problem.

Dinner at the restaurant was also brilliant, service excellent. The grounds are lush and beautifully tended, you feel like you're walking through the gardens of a tropical estate instead of a hotel. The beach area isn't huge but there is always enough space for everyone. At the Colony Club, guests were up before 7am reserving seats by the beach but here, there was no need (a combination of a different type of guests, the smaller size of the hotel and also the way the beachfront is arranged).

Overall, a very pleasant stay, I would recommend anyone coming this way to consider this hotel if you like an understated and personal experience and good service.

We stayed in the Sandpiper in December 2006 and are already thinking about a return visit this year. The whole experience was what we were hoping for - a relaxed, welcoming place but with some style and class. We've been to a few top hotels in Mauritius and although you could argue that the quality may just edge it over there, the overall experience of the Sandpiper was excellent.

We ate out a lot (The Cliff, Tides, Lone Star, Bajan Blue, Fish Pot, etc...) which has got to be the attraction of the West Coast, however, we also had an excellent meal in the Restaurant (although we weren't blown away by the buffet night).

The staff are all very friendly and added to the relaxed, welcoming feel of the place - particularly the boat club staff (very helpful when you capsize the Hobie a couple of miles out!). If you're a very keen watersports 'people' (like us) then you'll not be disappointed by the water skiing, speed boat activities and sailing. Slightly disappointing was the lack of kit for windsurfing (very old/broken) and that the wind direction is almost always off-shore and you'll be swimming it back in from way out (head south for windsurfing I'm told) - although a minor issue in the grand scheme.

Their reputation and repeat guests (almost eveyone we met had been before) are well deserved as are the rating on this site - which we're now helping to sustain!

In the words of Arnie - I'll be back!!!
