“Chill out holiday!!”
Reviewed November 30, 2011

Visited the Island Inn Hotel on the 7th November 2011 and stayed with my wife for 7 nights.
This small boutique hotel offers everything that is required on arriving in Barbados. The rooms are quality with large king size beds, good sized en-suite bathroom offering shower and bath, air conditioning,tv,and close to a decent sized swimming pool.
Only 24 rooms which means the excellent staff are always on hand whenever you need them.
The hotel is all inclusive offering a buffet style breakfast, lunch between 12 and 2 and an excellent a la carte Dinner. The food is quality.(Our only complaint during our stay was that although lunch was offered between 12 and 2 you still had to book a time to eat rather than just turn up between those times.when you are on holiday it is not always possible in a morning to know exactly when you want to eat lunch!!)
The bar is well run with all drinks available including cocktails.
Although this hotel is not on the beach it is only a one minute walk away.
This is a great hotel to completely chill out!!

We loved the Island Inn:

- The rooms were smart and clean.
- Front desk was receptive and helpful with any queries.
- The ladies working in the dining room were lovely.
- The guys running the bar were charming.
- The food was simply done but very tasty (lots of nice local seafood).
- The entertainment was really sweet and tasteful (local musicians) who play a couple of times a week whilst you enjoy a cocktail or your food. Love Richie's one man band and his local ballards!
- The hotel is a short ride (20 mins) from the Airport, Oistins (fish-fry Fridays!) and Miami beach and most importantly a short walk to Pebbles beach (30 seconds) and Carlisle Bay (3 mins and a real gem).

Would we go back - yes, most certainly, and we have already recommended the hotel to lots of people back home!

Room Tip: Rent a car for the day and explore the island.

Wow, what a week.

ROOM:
We had a junior suite and it was very much worth it. Great big mahogany bed, 2 showers, large sitting area and everything was pristine.

SERVICE:
Service is fantastic. Barbados is the friendliest country I have ever been to though. The staff go out of their way to do things and surprised me a few times with small, simple things which made everything easier for us. The manager Thora was always around and Earl, Michael, Carol and Jeanette are particularly kind.

LOCATION:
2mins from one of the nicest stretches of beach we had seen on the island. Walk down to pebbles beach and turn right for a short while. The sea bed is coral free there and you can swim quite far out and still touch the floor. The sea is so clear, warm and the beach uncrowded.
The nearest nightlife/restaurants is at St Lawrence gap, get a cab!

ALL INCLUSIVE:
Disappointed at first as it is different to normal all inc. Eating times are set and meals are normally ordered from a limited menu. I am not a particularly fussy eater but I dont eat fish and that was one of the 2/ 3 options every day. It is such a small hotel though and to offer buffet food everday would create a lot of wastage so I do understand. The hotel made us a great packed lunch one day to take to the beach. Try it!

We were the youngest there by about 30 years but it didnt stop us making friends. There is a real family atmosphere at the hotel and many of the guests were returning visitors and we can see why.
I had a tear in my eye as we left. We had a wonderful time.

We stayed at the Island Inn for 7 Nights and my first impressions were very good and pretty much what I had expected from a small Boutique Hotel. I booked a Superior room which was definitely a good idea as we had a large King Size bed, Walk-in Robe and Modern Bathroom. The standard rooms are located at the rear of the hotel and these are very basic. Most guests that were staying at the hotel during our stay complained about the standard rooms and ended up upgrading to Superior Rooms!

The staff were all extremely friendly and the restaurant staff were excellent but I found the pace of service at the bar to be sooo slow. The bar was never fully staffed despite up to 3 barmen working at a time and It became frustrating hanging around an empty bar in the hope of bumping into one of them if you ever fancied a drink during the hotest parts of the day. The hotel was very quiet with only 20 guests so I suppose the barmen were probably also a little bored hanging around. To be fair when the bar was busy you could get whatever drink you wanted unfortunately this wasn’t the case throughout the day.

The food was OK with a good buffet breakfast typical of an All Inclusive Hotel. The lunch and Evening Meals were sit down service but the choice was very limit with just 2 options. Starters for both meals was usually Soup or Salad followed by Fish or Chicken/Pork for dinner. The lunch menu to be honest was poor and was repeated every 3-4 days with Burger & Chips, Hotdogs, Salad & Chips on the menu most days. While the quality of food was good at dinner time, the portion sizes were tiny. I'm not a buffet pig but I usually stocked up on breakfast!

Pebble beach beside the Hotel is beautiful and not even 1minute walk away. Snorkelling with Turtles and Shipwrecks at Carlisle Bay was a 5 minute walk from the hotel - Perfect. The beach from the Hotel all the way to Bridgetown was virtually deserted and postcard perfect. We bathed around the Hilton a few days which again was a 5 minute walk away and we were able to use their loungers at no cost as Pebble beach don’t have them.

We visited their sister hotel "Mango Bay Hotel" twice during our stay as you can use their facilities usually for 1 day as part of your hotel package (talk nice to the staff). It’s a beautiful place with amazing food - what I had expected at the Island Inn. The beach was small but the elevated deck area made up for the lack of sand. The service was also excellent maybe not as friendly as the Island Inn but the bar serves a mean strawberry dackery!!!!

To Sum it up, I booked a last minute trip so I was extremely happy with the hotel for what I paid. I was a little disappointed with the food but again for the cost it was still quite good. For “Hurricane” season, the weather was amazing with temperatures in the 30’s and not a drop of rain. I will be returning to Barbados but would probably go to a different hotel.

Room Tip: Upgrade to Superior or Pool Side as the Standard rooms are definately standard.

My husband and I have just returned from our third visit to the Island Inn. We stayed two weeks from 30th September and would go back tomorrow if we could!

This hotel simply can't be faulted. It is the smallest all inclusive hotel in Barbados, with 24 single storey rooms with cable tv and air con. Some guests have been visiting the hotel for 18 years(!) and most guests are return visitors.

It is located in the historic Garrison district and used to be the rum store for the Garrison so you can walk to George Washington House, Barbados Museum and horse racecourse easily and it is a ten minute bus ride from Bridgetown for the duty free shopping or visit to the local markets. We frequently walk back along the beach of Carlisle Bay to the hotel from Bridgetown. You can get a ZR or local bus in any direction to visit other tourist interests and Oistins fish fry is a lively 30 minutes bus ride away. If you fancy a guided tour of the island, ask Carol or Angela at reception to book Grantley to drive you.

It is quiet - the most lively it gets is if its fully booked and they have one of their manager bbq and music nights - so this is definitely the place to wind down. The nightlife isn't too far away if you want to find it though.

The rooms are clean, the pool area spotless, the beer and rum punch served by the lovely Earl, Michael and Caine always cold and the service you get from Jeanette, Cyrilene and Doris in the restaurant is always warm and friendly (we would happily adopt the ever-smiling Cyrilene if we could - she is a real treasure!).

Pebble beach is a 1 minute walk from the hotel and its clean sea water is simply the best we have found on Barbados (although we agree there is a lack of shade on the beach). It is located at the end of Carlisle Bay and is a sheltered swimming spot - usually safe to swim in despite the surrounding beaches displaying red flags.

You need to queue to buy a fish cutter and beer from the excellent and clean beach shack for B$10 if you miss lunch.

If you want to learn to scuba dive, there are two dive shops located nearby - Barbados Blue is located on the edge of the Hilton hotel site on Pebbles Beach, the other dive shop - the Dive Shop Limited is on the road to Bridgetown on the other side of the Barbados Yacht club. We dived with Barbados Blue and had a great time with G, Roger and Robert. If snorkelling is more your thing, you can walk ten minutes toward Bridgetown and snorkel off Carlisle Bay opposite the bandstand (look out for the white buoys which signal the location of the three wrecks). We also hired a small jeep for two days from Stoutes car rental and were impressed with the service. This enabled us to visit the Harrison Caves, Andromeda Gardens, Bathsheba and Sunbury plantation house.

One point to note currently is that there are building works going on at the Grand Barbados hotel adjoining Pebbles beach which could cause a nuisance to an otherwise friendly but tranquil spot, but they aren't overly disruptive in our opinion.

We are truly amazed by the recent review as it does not reflect our experience of the Island Inn EVER. We have always found our hosts to be charming and friendly. The food reflects the Bayan cuisine and the 3-star bargain price of the hotel.

If you want a faceless corporate hotel and are happy paying the price for it - there are plenty on the island. If you want to stay somewhere full of Bayan charm, located in a historic area and get a real taste of Barbados at a very reasonable price, then we wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Island Inn. We can't wait to return.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a pool room or suite for a guaranteed fabulous room.

I have just returned from my first trip to Barbados and wonder how anyone could find fault with
The Island Inn.
The negative comments say more about the people who write them and perhaps if they learnt to treat people positively and with respect they may have a different experience.
Our first impressions when we arrived, we were a bit unsure of the streets leading to the hotel but what we saw was typical Barbados.
As soon as we walked from the cab (2pm) we were welcomed as new friends Carol showed us to our room straight away and encouraged us to quickly get changed and come for a drink at the bar. All the staff were so nice and genuine we learned all their names on the first day or whenever we met.
How often can you say that about any hotel?
The bar staff would make whatever drinks took your fancy. If it was strong or weak they would adjust to our taste. We had room 8 in the court yard which was beautiful and my wife and I both went "Wow” when we walked in and at the same time said "this well do for me". The housekeepers do a fantastic job daily with as many clean towels as you need. Nothing was a problem. We were often told to just ask if we needed anything.
There were previous negative comments about birds and the monkeys being a nuisance!! Come on, Think, just for a second where you are. I suspect they were in the area before us so may have some right to be their, they were never a problem.

We had a walk to the beach most days which takes, from any room, 2 min max. The beach is stunning and safe. My only complaint was there was no shade on the beach and would suggest as other have suggested that the hotel get some umbrellas for guests use. So our experience was positive as was every other guest we spoke to. Everyone had been before and some 5 and 6 times year after year.

It’s a gem, as are all the staff. Can’t wait to go back to Barbados and most certainly The Island Inn

Well after staying at the Island Inn I cannot believe the other reviews are talking about the same hotel. The room was nice enough but from day one the staff were unfriendly and the food pretty non existent. Plates of food presented at the table because there were not enough people for a buffet. Hardly any selection for breakfast or dinner and lunch was dire. Eventually moved to the sister hotel the Mango Bay which was so much better and as All Inclusive should be.

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the pool, some rooms are tucked around the back and do not have a patio
