Owner description: Across Broad Street from the Parliament Buildings and bordered by High and Trafalgar streets, this triangular "square" (formerly called Trafalgar Square) marks the center of town. Its monument to Lord Horatio Nelson (although Nelson was in Barbados only briefly in 1777, when he was a 19-year-old navy lieutenant) predates Nelson's Column in London's Trafalgar Square by 36 years. Also here are a war memorial and a fountain that commemorates the advent of running water on Barbados in 1865.

“A wonderful tribute”
Reviewed April 17, 2014

Barbados has a rich history and it is a shame that the tourism dept. does not offer trips to historical sites. We visited Bridgetown and were bored with the shopping (same shops as every other island) and walked over to the Parliament. There is a lot to see in this area. Walk along the Careenage and look at the boats. There are a few restaurants in this area and local vendors stalls. There are also many landmark churches and a synagogue, as well as a few other historical sites.

“nelson was here....”
Reviewed December 22, 2013

a bit of Britain even in the new world.....there are two monuments here...one for admiral nelson, and another which memorializes those british subjects who lost there lives during WW1 and, also WW11....quite a long list for such a small island...take a moment to reflect upon the terrible cost of war in such a tranquil setting...

“Average Attraction”
Reviewed November 30, 2013

Nelson's statue is jammed into a tiny parcel of land near the Parliament Buildings. It has significant historical interest for those so inclined, including myself. Otherwise, its just a statue in an unattractive setting in busy downtown Barbados.
