We stayed at Pompano on the above dates and the trip was great despite the weather not fully cooperating. We used Air Canada from Toronto and the flights were on time and uneventful. The seatback screens are hit and miss. Some worked, some didn’t. We also took CEO Transport from the airport. They were there on time and made one stop at the Southampton Fairmont prior to dropping us at Pompano at around 1:30 pm. Return trip to the airport on departure day was again with CEO Transport and they were on time and efficient.
We stayed in a deluxe room, # 80, on upper floor. The view of the ocean was spectacular and the balcony overlooked the surf. The room had a king bed which was very comfortable. Two sinks in the large bathroom, separate tub and shower with good water pressure and no problems with hot water supply. Lots of channels on the television, a couple of Toronto channels to keep up with news from home (although it was nice to get away from Rob Ford news for a few days).
Had lunch the first day at the pool snack bar. We were impressed at the choices on the menu and the view can’t be beat. My wife got in the water on the first afternoon, said it was cool but comfortable. A few others swimming that day, some for long periods of time snorkelling. She also went the last afternoon we were there when the sun reappeared and the winds died down. She managed a few minutes in the water but said the ocean temperature had dropped a lot, probably due to high winds stirring things up.
Meals were great all week. We were on the meal plan and had dinner two times in the main dining room and three times in the room overlooking the water. The menus at both are great. The main dining room menu changes nightly and requires no reservations while the lower dining room has a set menu and requires reservations. Wines were $40+ but they will recork and serve you the same bottle if you don’t finish the bottle. Good selection of reds. Five courses available for those with a large appetite. Great appetizers, soups and salads. My wife raved about the seafood chowder and had it several times. Steaks I had were good but could have been more tender. Cooked to the right doneness/colour but not as tender as I have at home when buying similar Angus AAA. I had the rack of lamb twice at the lower restaurant, the second time because it had been so good a few nights earlier. It didn’t disappoint the second time either. Dessert every night was great. Breakfast was served in the main dining room every day, either a la carte or on two days we had a very good buffet. The usual choices of eggs cooked anyway you want, fruits, waffles, French toast, etc with great bacon.
We had temperatures ranging from 18-22 C (~ 65-73F) during the day. The weather was very windy. We went the same week that the storm hit the eastern seaboard and while we didn’t get the snow, we got sustained winds of 30-50 mph for two days with heavy rain at night. The high winds didn’t stop us from doing anything but the frequent cloud cover stopped my wife from seeing a sunset any night we were there which she had been looking forward to.
We used the bus to get around without any problems. We bought a $20 book of tickets from the front desk. Used those all up and bought another one which we didn’t finish so we have to return again to use them up. We took the ferry from Hamilton to Rockaway one day as well and were picked up at the ferry stop by the hotel van. We did the Dockyard, went to Hamilton a couple of times, went to the Aquarium and walked on the Railway trail in the four full days we were there. We went to relax and did just enough to keep busy and still be able to relax. Didn’t make it to St. George, next trip I guess.
The staff at Pompano are in a word, fantastic. Very friendly, greet you like old friends, offer great advice with any questions asked. This included all the front desk staff, waiters and waitresses, bartenders, drivers and Larry Lamb, the owner/manager. We were provided with rides to the bus stops every morning and walked the approximately 800 yards back to the resort from the main road at the end of the day. Being such a small resort (I think 75 rooms?), it was easy to meet people staying there. It was nice to compare ideas about where to go, what to see and how to get there with other guests at dinner and breakfast.
It had been about 16 years since we had been at Pompano. We liked the smaller size of the place compared to a hotel like the Fairmont Southampton. My wife and I both agreed that we will now attempt to return yearly if possible we enjoyed it so much. She has to see the sunset, I have to play golf at Port Royal and we have to get to St. George so we have unfinished business.
