“Unbeatable service, location & facilities”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 2, 2009

I go to Bermuda twice a year, but this was my first time at the Fairmont. It was much cheaper than other hotels on the island, but I was pleasantly surprised & it was much nicer than its more expensive competitors. The hotel runs like clockwork & everyone from the maid service to the beach attendants were very helpful, friendly, & efficient. The beach is great, as is the pool, and all of the rooms have amazing views of the water. The spa & indoor pool are also top notch. The breakfast was wonderful. 2 of Bermuda's best hotels are at the restaurant.

The hotel is especially helpful with small children & elderly people, and everyone in our party loved the property.

We booked this vacation to take advantage of the Fairmont's recent rate special – and we loved our experience! We had mixed concerns after reading the reviews before going, but we we pleasantly satisfied with the hustle and bustle of this old gem. We agree that the building's exterior is dated while seeming to contradict its lovely formal, British wood interior. We must have had one of the updated rooms because we found our room's decor lovely, clean, crisp, and well-maintained. Everything was in working order with the exception of that pesky tiny TV everyone mentions that "buzzes" through the walls between rooms! GET FLATSCREENS!! Room assignment apparently plays an important role in one's ultimate happiness at this hotel. We felt lucky to have been given a western exposure overlooking the lighthouse and nightly sunsets, so we didn't mind not having a direct ocean view. We surely understand how a poor view, neighbor noise, or large roof exposure could ruin someone's experience, especially for someone who paid the full $400+ per night rate. Ultimately, the pink beaches and turquoise water is what Bermuda is all about - if you are fortunate enough to get sunshine. Apparently it was a very rainy June, but we walked the beach in the rain anyway and still had an outstanding experience!! Get out there and go! Our housekeeper was excellent and attending - she masterfully made us feel like we were her only guests. All services went out of their way to please us, and we noticed that they respond well to guests who ALSO use their own polite manners! As noted in other reviews, expect several extra "fees" tagged to your daily bill, including a $20 per night "Room Gratuities" fee for hotel and maid services, plus some obscure $18 "Southampton Resort Levy". I did, however, like knowing that I didn't have to fish for loose dollars every time I needed something from room service or boarded the trolley. We enjoyed the food at Jasmine’s in the Fairmont lobby bar – the entire presentation is very well done with impeccable English service and delicious lighter selections. On the other hand, the Waterlot Restaurant is overpriced and not nearly as wonderful as everyone makes it out to be - for all the hoopla, we've had better flavor and service elsewhere throughout our travels. We paid over $300 for the two of us ($20 bucks for water, $40 for two glasses of champagne), and the wait staff broke down the back half of the restaurant during the end of our dinner right in front of us (including turning the table next to us on its side to roll away!!). Talk about a lack of ambience!!! No comp of any kind was offered. When we go out to dinner, we go to get AWAY from work, not to watch the waiters clean up and prepare for the next day. It was fun, however, to eat in a building from the year 1670. We much preferred the restaurant at Gibb's Lighthouse - delicious food and beautifully presented at a fair price. It is relatively new with not many reviews, and we felt satisfied that we "took a chance". Beach-wise, the best beaches on the island are easily accessible from the Fairmont. The hotel’s private beach is stunning, but famous Horseshoe Beach is conveniently located next door and reached easily in a five-minute walk through the iron gate by the hotel trolley drop-off. Both are terrific and breathtaking to walk (and climb!) for hours. BIGGEST PAIN: Getting to and from both ends of the island - we spent more time on buses and ferries than we did touring!! We wish we could go back and spend two days in St. George's, then move down the island to the Fairmont to catch the west end and dockyard. We suggest buying a multi-day bus/ferry pass - an especially convenient bargain, but you must strategically plan your day to avoid the disappointment of blowing your day in a terminal or roadside bus stop. We were too timid to try the scooters as we heard reports of accidents on the narrow roads, but many people love them and find them convenient. The residents (and buses!) zoom around those close corners just inches apart, and we didn't want to make a devastating mistake. Buy your spirits early in your vacation from a local market - even the expensive corner tourist store will save you hundreds on hotel drink prices. The Dive Shop on the beach is a good choice for planning SCUBA dives. The resort trolley up and down the hill to the beach is fast and timely. We found the trolleys to be endearing and convenient, and the bus drivers are especially pleasant, informative, and friendly. A cab ride to and from the airport averages around $40 each way. We especially appreciated the late check-out granted conveniently to facilitate our flight departure. Read all reviews for other points of view and consider joining the Fairmont's President's Club for extra perks. Had the weather been perfect, we may have had the vacation of our dreams - we would certainly recommend the Fairmont as a wonderful place to call home while in Bermuda.

Everything about the hotel and the location was absolutely perfect.

Never having been to Bermuda, we wanted to stay a hotel that we would be confident that the rooms, service and location were a "sure bet"
This is not so easily accomplished in Bermuda as the usual Major chains do not have a presence there. We usually chose a Marriott for that " Sure Bet " factor where you know the rooms and grounds will be nice and you will be guaranteed good food on the premises if you desire.

The Fairmount Southhampton met and exceeded our expectations.
Beaches and Access to Beach- Excellent
Restaurant Availability- Excellent
Rooms and Housekeeping- Excellent
Staff- Excellent

Can’t say enough good things about the place.

My wife and I stayed at the Southampton during first week of July. It is definitely one of the best resort hotels we've ever experienced. The hotel itself is sited on the top of the highest hill on the island so it has great views in all directions. (Granted, if your room is on a lower floor the view may include roofs of attached buildings.) We had a 4th floor room on the back side facing the lighthouse and the great bay. Unless you're going to spend your whole vacation on your balcony, that view was fine for that first cup of coffee and the morning news. The room itself was plush, very comfortable king bed, marble-tiled bath, quality furniture and linens. Small TV though, with uneven reception.
All the staff we encountered was very professional and congenial, most especially the concierge Kurlene. Even though we pestered her daily with dumb tourist questions, she treated us like we were important, and I'm sure she did the same for everyone. Even the waiter Roger remembered what we were drinking all week after our first visit to the lounge. In yet another sign of the economy, due to the drop in bookings, the hotel's top restaurant the Newport Room was not open this season. However the remaining dining rooms were very good. We ate twice at their Italian restaurant Bacchi, both times were excellent. The Waterlot restaurant, also part of the hotel complex, but down at the ferry dock, is excellent and formal (and expensive, even for Bermuda). The kind of place you'd dress up for, even on vacation.
Because the hotel is at the top of a rather steep hill, it provides shuttle bus down to the beach complex and to the ferry dock, where you can get public bus to anywhere else you'd want to go. Bus service is very good and frequent. The Fairmonts operate their own ferry free to guests between the Southampton Waterlot dock and the Hamilton Princess 4 trips a day. Great way to get into town for shopping, sightseeing. However, the last trip of the day is not late enough to accommodate anyone wishing to dine in Hamilton. You'll have to taxi home.
One thing we didn't like was that the indoor pool was reserved for spa clients only during the day until 6:30. Since we had a couple of rainy weather days, that was an inconvenience.

We visited the Southampton Princess for our honeymoon. When we arrived at 1pm, we weren't aware of a standard 4pm check-in time there, so our room wasn't ready. They told us it would be ready by 3, but when 4 rolled around and they couldn't give us our room, I complained and they gave us a slight upgrade to an available room -- not sure why they didn't give us that room in the first place. Another couple was complaining to the manager about exactly the same problem at the same time -- rather embarrassing for them.

That said, after that one experience, the rest of our stay at the Fairmont Southampton was pleasant and problem-free. There are many restaurants connected to the resort, and several of them had very good food and excellent service (The Ocean Club, Wickets). The hotel's beach was a bit crowded but otherwise fine.

Overall the hotel seemed a bit understaffed. It was hard to reach anyone after 10pm -- including the front desk. And the housekeeping staff seemed beleaguered. It's an enormous hotel, and you really feel it, especially when the staff wasn't available to pick up the phone.

Our room was clean and comfortable. The hotel bus to the beach and ferry came frequently.

I would recommend this to people traveling with families (there were many kids) and people who want to be in a comfy place without having to plan too much.

Beware: some things aren't free -- internet, breakfast and fitness center (ouch!) all cost extra.

My mother, sister, and I went to Bermuda to celebrate my sister's 30th birthday and decided to get a golf course view/moderate room at the Fairmont Southampton. A lot of other reviews on TripAdvisor had negative comments, but we couldn't have been more pleased with our stay! We are not 5-star hotel snobs or anything, we just like a good, clean, nice hotel and that's exactly what we got. Although we didn't get a golf course view, we got a fantastic view of the northshore - could see all the way from the dockyard out to Hamilton. They gave us a bottle of prosecco and choc. covered strawberries in our room when we got there too! The beds and bathroom were appropriately themed (nautical print) . The room service was great and the staff super friendly and helpful. The hotel's beach is great - not crowded and bright blue water :) Right next door you can walk to Horseshoe Bay (which is a MUST see). There were shuttles running all the time and all the staff were so friendly. I'd definitely come back to this hotel again!! Oh - and the pool was great too!

**as everyone else has written, Bermuda is very expensive. Bring a good chunk of change to spend, but it is certainly worth it.

**Barracuda Grill in Hamilton is spectacular. It's one of those meals that you will remember for a long time. So delish!

First and foremost i would like to state that i love the island of Bermuda.

Wehn it ocmes to the Fairmont South Hampton i was very disappointed with the hotel. The facilities themselves were very nice. It was a bit of a hastle ot have to take a trolly down to the beach and back but that was the least of my concerns.

We arrived at the Fairmont South Hampton on thursday afternoon aroudn 1 oclock. Our room was not ready (which i was fine with i dont have unrealistic standards) and was told that our room was GARUNTEED to be ready by 4. Not only after askeing more than 5 times if our room was ready, we werent able to get into our room til after 6 pm. When asked about their so called "garuntee of 4 oclock" the staff behind the counter shrugged and simply told us its what they try for.

One of our reasons for staying at the Fairmont South Hampton was to play golf. Myself and my friend brought our own clubs from home. When we arrived at the hotel at 1 pm one of the bellman asked us if we would like our golf clubs takemn down to the golf course to be kept which we said would be perfect. At 5:30, we went outside and our golf clubs were still sitting in the front of the hotel completely unattended. When asked why they were sitting out there and why that hadnt been taken care of we again recieved a shrug and had to bring them in ourselves.

Then yesterday evening when we were aboput to take the damned trolly down to the restaurant on the ocean we asked the bellman if we could have our golf clubs brought up from the golf course, which they claimed they would do right away. We got back from dinner 3 hours later and AGAIN our $1,000 golf clubs were sitting in the front of the hotel completely unattened to. Again when asked why they were out there yet again for the 2nd time with no one watching them, we just got mumbled answers.

These incidents were the most major of the ones we encountered in out 4 day stay at the hotel. The restaurants were very expensive with very minimal other lower price options available. I understand that alot of things on the island are more expansive but no matter where i got $30 for breakfast per person is a bit much if you ask me.

Other minor-ish things:
-for the size of the hotel the pool was small and almost impossible to find a chair at after 10 am
-the indoor pool and gym were only accessable to guests who booked a painfully and outrageously prices spa service
- had to pay to use the internet
-no business center

The best experience i had with the staff was with the golf shop workers. Nothing bad to say about them, they were more than helpful.

All in all i loved the island but was very unimpressed with the hotel and its staff for what it costs to stay there.
