“Beautiful place with an amazing staff.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2014

We stayed for four days and this place is beautiful. The resort is older but very well maintained. The rooms were very clean and had the most amazing view ever. The staff was the best I have ever experienced. They were extremely helpful and happy to fulfill any requests you may have. Just like every thing on the island the food is pricey in the restaurant, but very good. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to go to Bermuda.

Our first trip to Bermuda was flawless. Easy direct flight from BWI and the hotel was wonderful.
The location of Coco Reef Resort is on famed Elbow Beach allowing great flexibility for sightseeing. In the four day weekend we were able to see most of the island. Scooter rentals are only five minutes away! The beach was beautiful and great for snorkeling. The food in the hotel restaurant was fabulous. The rooms were well appointed and had a wonderful view of the water. Would definitely stay here again!!

Room Tip: Beach Front rooms preferable. Easy access to the pink sand!

The setting: This property faces Elbow Beach, one of the better beaches on Bermuda. You are about 15km/25 minutes, and around $30 from the airport. There is a supermarket just before the turnoff to the hotel. Stop here on your ride from the airport, before checking in, to get bottled water and any other items, as the ten minute walk from the hotel, in scorching heat will not be a highlight of your day. The local community college sits ahead of the hotel, but you don’t notice it at all once you are on the property. The lobby is large and inviting, although dozens of paintings of a woman’s face, done in loud colors in a mass produced, Caribbean Isle style, definitely take away from the gracious air of the lobby. There is a restaurant off the lobby with a patio that faces the pool and ocean. The pool is medium sized with some lounge chairs around it. The property consists of four blocks of buildings, each two floors with eight rooms, four per floor. The hotel has exclusive access to the far corner of Elbow Beach. There are two sections of beach chairs. The larger section has two tiers and is built in a semicircle. The second section, cut off from the first by a cliff has three short rows of lounge chairs. Both sections have plenty of umbrellas. There are two large rock formations on the beach, each obstructing most of the view of the beach.

The rooms: We opted for the less expensive ocean view rooms, as opposed to the ocean front rooms. The difference between the two is just the distance to the beach. All the rooms have patios/balconies, although they lack awnings so you are exposed to the intense sunlight while out on your patio. Irrespective of the type of room you opt for, the second floor rooms have better ocean views. The rooms themselves are spacious and clean, although completely dated. The furniture and the décor, as well as old bulky TVs with small screens, make you feel like you have arrived to Bermuda @ 1985. However, you are probably staying here for the beach, so the rooms are not the focal point. The most disappointing aspect of the rooms is the shower. The water pressure is abysmal; the faucet never fully shuts off when you pull the shower switch, which further reduces the super low water pressure through the shower head. If you have long hair, shampooing becomes a chore. There is a mini-fridge in the room for your water and groceries. The hotel does not stock the room with any bottled water. The tap water is potable but does not great taste. There are vending machines for drinks, but if you want a large bottle of water you have to trek to the grocery store.

The restaurant: I always slept through breakfast, so I can’t report on that, but the Caesar Salad we had for lunch was delicious. The wine and drinks list is limited but the staples are here. Prices are not cheap, but by NYC standards, are reasonable. There is no need to eat dinner here as the restaurants at the next door Elbow Beach Resort are much better. Even lunch is better at the Elbow Beach Resort’s beachfront restaurant. Just walk for five minutes down the beach and you are there.

All in all, Coco Reef is a good option, as Elbow Beach is an excellent strip of sand with a pristine and calm ocean. The color of the sand is no longer pink, but you get over that quickly. If you get a deeply discounted rate, your decision to stay here makes even more sense. The posh Elbow Beach Resort next door is double or triple the cost of Coco Reef. The dated décor and the absurd paintings of a woman’s face, which hang throughout the property, can be overlooked. What kept gnawing at me was the lack of bottled water, the horrible water pressure in the shower, the cheap beach chairs and umbrellas and the lack of a shower at the beach to rinse off after a swim. The Elbow Beach Resort next door has modern, comfortable chairs and sturdy, wide umbrellas. Every time I glanced at these, I hated the ones at Coco Reef more and more. There is a hose to wash your feet as you leave the beach, so one wonders why a simple shower couldn’t have been installed as well. The other aspect worth mentioning is the unfriendly front desk staff. You will not be greeted with a smile here, so don’t expect it.

It is amazing to find a resort which is not part of any chain, and where the staff are permanent! Everyone of them is committed to having the place succeed, and it shows. Additionally, the rooms are well-appointed with great views, and this is the best Atlantic swimming I've ever known. It is a bit of a hike up hill from many of the rooms to the main building, but being close to the water makes it worth it. We were there at the end of the season ( end of October), so there weren't a lot of guests, and things were pretty quiet in the restaurant and lounge. That has advantages and disadvantages! We had no complaints and can easily recommend it.

Room Tip: Some rooms are adjacent to the main building and on the same level, but they are farthest from the b...

This luxurious and well designed hotel nestles above the ocean in Paget. It is in its own secluded gardens, a 10 minute walk from the main road. The rooms are superbly furnished and enjoy fantastic views of the ocean. They have a wide screen t.v., radio, fridge, coffee maker, fan and air conditioning. Great comfortable bed and good quality bedding and towels and a large bathroom make your stay great. There is a bar ( with a happy hour!) and a restaurant serving a buffet breakfast and lunch and dinner. I have seen comments about the prices but all food is expensive in Bermuda and dinner here is, by comparison, good value- if you have two courses for lunch or dinner, you get a complimentary glass of very decent wine! The rooms are spread out across the site but there is a buggy to transport you and your luggage to your accommodation. All staff are helpful and very obliging.
There is a bus route at the main road and 3 minutes along the road there is a mini market and ATM.
(The only way your stay could be better is if long life cartons of milk were provided instead of dairy creamer and there were clearer instructions for the idiosyncratic air conditioning system!).
I would fully recommend a stay here!

Room Tip: Ask for block 1 or 2 ( rooms 100+ or 200+) to be closest to the ocean

I am only writing this as a public service because I would rather forget the time I stayed here.

After 24 hours my husband and I felt we had to leave. The staff was indifferent at best but the real deal breaker was the room. Not only was it significantly outdated but also quite dirty. There was sand on the floor, mildew in the bathroom, broken drawers, cracked ceiling tiles, leaking faucets, and the phone in our room was actually missing most of the buttons.(Yes, I have pictures.of all of this) Also we were in an "Ocean view" room on the first floor and the patio door curtains didn't close all the way. The door didn't seem very secure (no bar or anything for a first floor room) The beach is beautiful but the stairs going down to the beach are quite rickety and need to be fixed.
We tried to make the best of it and had dinner at the hotel our first night. We attempted to eat outside but the table cloth was really dirty (it had black streaks on it) so we asked to be moved inside. The tablecloth inside had salt all over it.
The second day of our vacation we spent traipsing all over Bermuda looking for a new hotel! When we returned around 3 pm to Coco Reef our room hadn't even been made up. We asked for new towels and even that took a few hours. Fortunately we were able to get into another resort later that day and had one of the best vacations of our lives! We tried to speak to the Coco Reef manager before we left but were told there was no manager on duty. Fortunately we were able to get a refund for the rest of our stay from the website we booked through. Bermuda is a wonderful beautiful island and we plan to go back soon (just not to CoCo Reef!)

I stayed at the Coco Reef for five nights in November, 2013 with a group of friends. If you're looking for stunning views and a beautiful beach at decent (for the island) prices, this is your place. If your priority however is convenience, great food and seamless service, go somewhere else.

On the plus side: every room has not just a view of the ocean but a a patio with sliding glass doors so you can sit outside and admire (and listen to) the waves. There's also a small private beach and easy access to the adjacent and stunning Elbow Beach with its pink sand and kite surfers, along with a larger more expensive resort next door. However on the negative side: the rooms are dated and the beds uncomfortable despite a recent renovation; the service while adequate is not particularly pro-active, welcoming or helpful; and the food is over-priced and only decent. It's also a ways from Hamilton town (15-20 minute cab ride, with a $15 base fare -- note: cab fares go up with more passengers, more luggage, and on the weekends), the airport (25-30 minute cab ride; $25) and Southampton beach (15 minute, $20 cab). I was there in the off-season so staff at the hotel was sparse, which meant that meal service was quite limited; it was impossible to get any food or drink between the hours of 3-7pm and after 9:30pm. Not even a snack. The only place to get food was from the casual (but adequate) diner-type restaurant a 10 minute walk down the road from the hotel.

But again, if beach time and scenery are why you came to Bermuda, than Coco Reef is a solid choice.
