There are lots of other scooter rental companies on Bermuda, there is absolutely no reason you should ever have to rent a scooter from this one. In short, a very curt, unpleasant gentleman rented us an incredibly old scooter, which broke down within one mile. We then had to wait for the one other staff member to bring us another incredibly old scooter. When I requested one with non-squeaking brakes, I was informed that all the scooters have squeaky brakes. Our second scooter successfully made it around the island, but with minimal pickup and dodgy, squeaky brakes requiring an abnormally long stopping distance. If this was your only option on the island, that would be fine, but we had actually rented an Oleander scooter two days before that was brand new, had great pickup, and cost the exact same amount. If we had only read the reviews, we would have walked the few extra blocks into town and would have rented from Oleander's Hamilton location. They probably would have also delivered the scooter to the Hamilton Princess for no additional cost, as they had delivered it to the Loren a few days before. We won't make the same mistake twice.
Bottom line is that Bermuda is not wonderful for bicycling (which is no big deal as there is so much else to do), but on top of that, bike rentals here are very expensive and must be rented for 24 hours, no other alternatives/shorter lengths of time for a few hour family bike ride. It was not disclosed to us that the rail trail was in such rough shape near our hotel and that stair cases were going to be involved requiring us to carry the bikes up and down cement stairs. My husband who has a hip injury had a difficult time with this so we abandoned the bike ride fairly quickly despite having just rented 3 bikes an hour before at the full rate.
I was served by a chap aged in his fifties or sixties, with a bushy white moustache, and what sounded like a Dutch accent, who was condescending and combative. When he asked whether I had experience riding a scooter I replied by stating that I possessed a full motorcycle licence, to which he in turn responded by saying that that didn't mean I knew how to ride a motorcycle. I proposed to him that in order to possess a full motorcycle licence one, assuredly, had to have had experience riding one. He then proceeded to argue that pilots could be trained on simulators without having flown an aircraft. This exchange was all very odd and completely pointless. In short, this pugnacious old goat really ought to be put out to pasture.
As for the scooter, likewise, had it seen better days. Though, in the interest of fairness, despite its squeaking brakes and temperamental fuel gauge, it did start every time and took me around the island just fine.
Yes...the scooters are pricey and yes...my scooter did not have a properly working speedometer or brakes for that matter...BUT...the service was great, the little lesson at the beginning was helpful and the day was so much fun touring all over Bermuda. It is the best way to get around and see everything. Plus....I have scootered twice in my life and both times in Bermuda. Love it!
The staff at the Fairmont Southampton was wonderful...friendly and helpful. The fleet of scooters, sadly was not as good. Our two seater should have been retired a few years ago! The speedometer and gas gauge only worked occasionally, parts fell off as we rode, in general it wasn't in good shape.
We rented scooters from Smatt's while we were at the Fairmont Southhampton. They are right on the property and will charge the rental to your room. A single is $55 for the day, but they add on a $30 "insurance" fee so the real rate is $85 per day for a single. It would be better if they just quoted the $85 rate up front.
They do cover the basic of operation with you and have you practice on the lot before you go out on the road.
We did have a problem with one of the scooters one day, but we phoned Smatt's, and they brought a new scooter out right away.
This was so much fun to scooter around and explore Bermuda that we rented the scooters on a second day.
It was easy to return the scooters after hours so we didn't have to worry about being back before the store closed.
We would recommend renting from Smatt's if you are in Southhampton.
