While I am an experienced fly fisher for trout this was my first fly experience on salt water. Ian was spectacular. He is very experienced and patient which he truly needed in my case.

I needed to learn how to cast a weighted fly since, I use drys, put the fly in the proper location (again very different from trout) work, and how to work the fly, and most importantly how to spot a bonefish in the water which was harder than I thought it would be.

He worked hard to put us on fish. He made sure that he put me in a spot where it was easier to see the fish against the bottom until I had a better idea of what these fish look like.

I didn’t catch any fish but that was more do to my inexperience than anything else. He put me in a position to catch bonefish and I am sure if you know what you are doing you will be able to catch them. As for me this trip was worth every penny and then some. It was so much fun. I know what I need to work on to have a successful trip the next time. And there will be a next time for sure.

He really tries hard to make sure his clients have a great day. For example he asked me if I like sardines and I do. He seined a whole pile of them and put them in the live well. At noon we stopped at a restaurant where he is friends with the chef and got him to fry up these sardines. We ate the freshest fish imaginable and they were delicious. My first time eating a whole head on fish guts and all. First time for everything..

On the way to the restaurant he spied a couple of hogfish in the bay where we were going. He rigged up a crab on a bait rod and cast it toward one of the hogfish. He then handed me the rod and help me catch it. He estimated it weighed about 9 pounds. I landed that one. (Well he really landed it but he swears that legally I caught it. I am not so sure.

He also has a wealth of information about Bermuda. Where to eat and stay and that kind of thing. And you also get a free lecture on all of the other fish that are around.

Anyway I can’t see anyway you could go wrong going out with Ian. It is worth every penny.

One of my top 3 or 4 bone fishing trips ever! And I can say that even though I did not land a single fish! Me and my buddy went with Ian for a half day and had the time of our life. Threw to many a monster bones pretty much throughout the morning. Had some interest and takes but no hookup. Highlight was the size of the bones(unreal) AND being able to present fly to hogfish! Actually had one hog take but not successful in landing. Amazing. Seems like we were the only flats boat fishing, just wish the tourist driving jet skis had a little common sense and courtesy. Ian, was super good guide, intense but not killing us when my buddy screwed up his cast! :-)

In difficult windy conditions, Ian placed me with shots to Bonefish, Hogfish and best of all, I caught a respectable (as Ian said) Pompano.

I learned quite a bit as Ian imparted his knowledge of Bermuda and flats fishing. I now have a better picture of what to look for when flats hunting.

I am highly recommending Ian. When I get a chance I will call on him again for the hunt.
