“Not to be missed if staying in Hamilton!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2011

We found this to be a special sight, not quite what you would expect. A little hard to find but that is part of the charm. The moat gardens are unique - unfortunately we couldn't descend all the way down but there is still a good view of them from the bridge where you enter. The views from the top are great, but it's also fun to walk around the outside of the fort walls which are overgrown and abut a pretty residential neighborhood. Seeing the fort is a low key way to get a feel for the history of the city that has grown up around it.

“I have mixed feelings about this one.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2010

Pros:

1. Walkable from downtown Hamilton
2. You can't beat the price: Free
3. Fun to explore the magazine tunnels.
4. The old moat has been turned into a jungle that is nice to walk around.

Cons:

1. Confusing to find. There is a sign, but there are multiple paths and we were stopped by someone as we went up a residential driveway by accident instead of entering the Fort area.
2. The inside of the fort is not well labeled or particularly informative. Fort St. Catherine is much better done and insightful, but that one does cost money to see.
3. The worst part: We were locked inside! After exploring the inside of the fort, we came back to the entrance to see it had been gated and locked. We could only access the hallways of the fort and the bottom of the moat. It felt like we were there forever as we tried to holler out of the moat to the main road, pick locks, and I considering trying to climb the drawbridge. Eventually a very nice man heard our shouts, called 911, and a security firm was called to come and help us. This nice Bermudian was our savior and could not have been nicer as he waited with us. The security man was a grump who blamed us and claimed he yelled down the hallways before he locked up. He rudely insisted it was our fault for not hearing him from well within the fort, or he implied we had heard him and ignored him. Like we wanted to be trapped in an ancient fort for hours. They really should be more careful and do a final, thorough check of the fort.

This place may be worth a visit, but there are better forts to explore if you don't mind spending a little money. Be mindful of not getting locked in too!

“An interesting/historic fort providing excellent views over Hamilton”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2009

The fort is approximately 15 minutes walk from Front Street, Hamilton's main thoroughfare. It does require an uphill climb, which may be challenging if you have mobility issues.

Entry is free and is made via a drawbridge over the dry moat. Inside everything is well kept and there are gun placements, cannons and disused shells all around for you to investigate. The fort is deceptively large with plenty of rooms and tunnels to explore. One tunnel takes you down into the moat enabling you to walk the circumference of the exterior walls.

From the top of the ramparts, you get an excellent view of Hamilton and its harbour. There is also plenty of seating should you wish to soak in the view for a bit longer.

“Fun History!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 24, 2008

Best fort to visit- entry over drawbridge where you can see how they cut down through solid coral to make the mote- which now contains a pathway through a beautiful garden. Fort has fantastic views of Hamilton and you can even see the ocean to the South of Bermuda. Nice interpretive signs showing the cannons-which swing up to fire, and you can go through the fortress below and see where powder and shells were stored. Quite fun and some benches to rest.
