“Tour of Hamilton with the Town Crier”
Review of Heritage Walk

Heritage Walk
Reviewed June 11, 2013

We did this tour with a group of cruisers last April . It is an excellent tour based on a tip as you like basis ( a minimum of $5 p/p is recommended) . The tour starts in the lobby of City Hall at 10.30 a.m. and lasts roughly 2 hours . Excellent presentation and narration by the Town Crier who seems to be known by everyone in town .
The tour ends at the back of City Hall and it may be worthwhile to have a look at the Arts Centre (free) .

A wide variety of Heritage Walks are offered each week. They are guided tours which are lead by Bermudians who are members of various Historical Societies from every area of Bermuda and are fantastically informative and enjoyable.

The booklet for the Winter tours run from November 1st to March 31st and are called Rendezvous Activities. The Summer tours are called Sizzling Summer and Start April 1st and continue through October 31st.

The tours we were able to enjoy were the Hamilton City walk, The Dock Lands and the Fortifications near Somerset, Somerset Village, The Old City of St. Georges and the Botanical Gardens. Each walk was approximately 2 hours in length. The walks are leisurely strolls which bring to life the history of Bermuda, her people and her ecology.

We discovered the tours while seeking information at the "Info centre" at the Ferry Dock in Hamilton. Allison Outerbridge was on duty and her enthusiasm for Bermuda, and the Historical Heritage Walks was infectious! (Allison led the St. George walk later in the week! Great tour!)

We decided to go on one in Somerset Village (led by Ann Smith-Gordon) and found it to be more than informative. Ann, a 70+ year resident of Somerset, led us to places, and stories, we would never have discovered without the tour, such as why the "Moon Gates" at the front entrances of many homes. ( I won't ruin it for you.)

If the idea of going to a place to enjoy the culture, food, attractions and heritage are on your lists, these Heritage Walks around Bermuda are THE BEST value possible, and you will come away with more than superficial memories.

Before you go, or while there, go to : http//:www.gotobermuda.com Click on "Activities" and download the brochures about "Free Activities". ( Bermuda Department of tourism.)
And while there, a must is to go to the Info-centre at the ferry dock, in Hamilton. If you do find Allison to be on duty, you will have struck gold! Say hi from the Niagara folks!

And, do "take a walk"!
