“A wonderful experience”
Reviewed April 17, 2013

The underwater experience in Bermuda is a wonderful diversion for both adults and children. A rainy day in Bermuda is rare but when they happen or when you need some relief from the sun this is the place. The exhibits are very well done and informative for all ages and knowledge levels. The interactive displays including the "dive" in a submersible are very well done. The entire family at all levels should enjoy this. It is a museum that we actually said we need to go back even after a two hour visit.

“Worth a Stop”
Reviewed April 5, 2013

The exhibits are very good here. There is much to learn and they have worked hard to make it as interesting as possible. This is a must if you have children under 12 - they will really like it. I liked learning more about undersea exploration and the shell collection is amazing.

“Good for kids and most adults”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

- Lots of information for kids and adults, with good mix of history and underwater life details
- Reasonable hours which, unlike many Bermuda websites, are actually listed on their website, so you don't have to go searching for hours on other websites
- Open 7 days/week
- Ample parking

- Better for families with kids than adult-only groups
- Value of visit may or may not justify the admission, but it's based quite a bit on sponsorships (maybe not-for-profit), so hard to argue
- Probably a max of 2 hours there without kids
- Far from town if you don't have a car, so if you're visiting, you'll need to take some kind of transport

We recently visited this attraction and generally enjoyed our visit there. The location is good for locals with private transportation, as it's right on Front Street, and has a great restaurant (Harbourfront) too. The restaurant is a bit pricey but many say it's the best sushi in town...anyway, that's not what this review is about.

The BUEI - Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute - is just that, although it felt like a museum that's not so much museum-like as it is interactive like a science exhibit. There are several rooms, including the largest seashell collection in the world, a (very very) small shark cage simulation, a short (maybe 7-10 minutes?) movie about seeing living things in waters generally too deep to explore, a treasure room, and a shipwreck room.

There is good info about the Bermuda shipwrecks, culture, and history, and it would be hard not to see at least one seashell that didn't make you look twice or stare.

Overall, it was a good place to visit once for an adult or group of adults. The only downside is that it is laid out and any activities planned are definitely geared for kids much more than adults (not quite an arcade but definitely that pizza-party feel to it where kids can run around), despite the reading panels scattered around it.

We are both scuba divers so already interested in what lies below sea level so enjoyed the movie and rare species the most, but even then, we visited every room, taking our time and reading about 60-100% of the information available as well as talking to the staff, and walked out after only an hour or so. So, at a cost of $12.50 each, it left us wanting a bit more. There are different memberships and sponsorships available for people who want to come again and again, but I can't see most people needing to visit the institute more than twice a year.

Somewhat mixed at the end. If you have time to kill and are not sure what to do, this might be an option for you as it's very informative. Have kids? Excellent for educating kids. If you have no interest in Bermuda waters or shipwrecks, you probably won't enjoy it. Personally, if I had an hour or two, I would go to Admiralty Park instead (see separate review).

“Extremely impressive displays”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

Very well displayed on the work of the Institute exploring tehwaters off Bermuda with all theri history as well as deep water exploration with a well simulated deep water dive. Obviosly a lot of work has gone into the diplays which are facinating including some very finds retrieved from wrecks round Bermuda's coast

“A great start to our sight-seeing...”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

BUEI is extensive and has a lot to offer: fact sheets and many exhibits are interactive, there is an underwater simulation, a shark cage simulation, films, and many artifacts. The price is reasonable and the staff are very friendly. They is a gift shop with a few snacks and drinks.
