“Surprises”
Reviewed June 27, 2012

I agree with richter72. I was suprised at how outdated the furniture was, suprised there was not a TV in the main bedroom. I was afraid to ask for fear there would be an additional charge. The TV in the living room looked like it was a 27 inch. The rooms were clean as were the towels. However, we were suprised at the cleaning fee upon check out. Not that I play golf but the golf courses are not kept up and not being used. Sooo if golf is what you like you will not find it here. The food at Griffins was good at the however, you need to make reservations for dinner and they do not serve breakfast except on Saturdays. A non- alcholic pina colada was $9.00 in a small plastic cup. Our first day we sat by the pool and had champagne in glasses however, the next day we were given plastic and told glasses are not allowed at the pool. Also, there's a 17% tip added to your bill in all of the restaurants in Bermuda like it or not. Our first afternoon at the club we were not aware of the tipping fee being included so we also tipped the waitress. I'm sure she loved that. She never said a word. Popcorn and movie night was reduced to just a movie. Griffin's is not open on Wednesdays. The shuttle doesn't start running until 12:00 noon and if Blackbeard's is closed then the shuttle doesn't run. Blackbeards was closed two days while were were there. You would think that a resort that has a shuttle would have transportation the airport "not" at ST. Georges's club. You will need to take a Taxi and the cost will depend on the driver and what mood they are in. My suggestions for anyone is to pay close attention to the fine print so you avoid surprises.

We just returned from a fantastic week at the St George's Club. There were 3 of us on this trip, my husband, our 15 year old neice, and me. We were assigned a wonderful 2 bedroom cottage with an amazing view--thanks again, Dee Dee!! The cottage was very spacious and provided every amenity. Everything was spotless, the cottage, the pools, and the grounds.

The location was great, with a bus stop as well as the town of St George, just steps away. There's also a shuttle to take you to Achilles Bay and the fantastic Blackbeard's Hideaway restaurant. (David, the driver, was always there any time we needed him. He's almost magical!!) From there, it's a short walk to Tobacco Bay, which my husband claims is the best snorkeling anywere!
You'll find some really good restaurants in St George, but our favorites are right there at the St George Club, Blackbeard's and Griffins. We ate most of our meals at those two. Any seafood dish we got was delicious, but one night my husband got a steak at Griffins. I was a little concerned because Bermuda's not known for its beef, but what a surprise we had. It was incredible...As good as the upscale steak restaurants here! We also love the wahoo sandwich at Blackbeard's and will think about it all year! At the St George's Club you also have the option of cooking yourself, with a fully equipped kitchen, including a dishwasher and a grocery store on site.

We're so grateful to Dee Dee and the entire staff for everything. We'll definitely be returning to the St George Club next year, if at all possible.

We were invited to Bermuda for a wedding and through friends, were were able to stay at the St. George's Club. We had a one bedroom cottage overlooking St. George's Harbor - full amenities and recently updated kitchen. Dee Dee Furbert and her staff were wonderful in making sure that we had everything we needed - cabs, shuttle, directions, information. Easy access to buses and ferry. Tremendous history. They have just brought in a new team to refurbish Blackbeard's restaurant and to update it's menu and also to update the menu at Griffin's. Piero and his team are from New York and we found that we had been to several of his former restaurants on Long Island, in Huntington and other locations. He is an excellent restauranteur. When we first met him, he was on day four but you could easily see that he was very comfortable getting the place in shape, enhancing the menu and is bringing in a chef from his former restaurants. Make sure to have the mussels with Pernod and cream. Absolutely wonderful!

We just returned from our trip to St. George's Club and loved it. We highly recommend this property if you are looking for a little more space on your next visit to Bermuda. Our rental was for a full week, Saturday to Saturday. We had a second floor unit with a 'lock off' (adjoining apartment, making our unit a two bedroom, two bath, with full kitchen/dining/livingroom space and 2 separate decks). We had everything we could possibly need. The property has 3 pools, small grocery store, its own beach with shuttle service and two restaurants, Griffins at the Club and Blackbeards at the beach. If you are looking at this property you can look up all the specifics of what the property offers and decide if it is something you are interested in for your vacation. We found everything to be very nicely appointed, clean and spaciously comfortable.

Some other things to know about this location are:
You can watch both sunrises and sunsets - we were greeted with the sun rising over the Unfinished Church and the St. George's town each morning on our deck, then in the evening we walked out to the golfcourse (which is now basically a walking trail to the beach as it is not used and overgrown) or went to Blackbeards at the Achilles Bay Beach to catch glorious sunsets.

The beach, Achilles Bay, is quiet, calm and not very crowded. There weren't more than 20 people on the beach with us at one time and that was when it was most crowded. Everyone had a chair of their own and an umbrella for your group if you wanted one. Snorkeling here was good as there are rock/coral formations right at the beach that extend over to Tobacco Bay. St. Catherine's beach is next door on the other side of the fort and is larger.

Blackbeard's has a fantastic fish sandwich! Everything we ordered there was very good, better than what we had at Griffins although that was also good (you are required to spend $60/person at Griffins during your week's stay but this can be used on drinks at the bar, lunch, dinner or desserts and can be ordered as take out if you want to eat in your unit or make a picnic). call for reservations at both locations to be on the safeside, especially on Mondays when the Club has a managers reception at Griffins in the early evening. Many people choose to stay and eat there afterwards.

If you are going to use the bus and ferry from St. George it's a longer ride so plan on spending more time in transit. We didn't mind the adventures but we did have a few mornings when the bus and ferry didn't run because of solidarity union "talks" which shut down the systems. Taxi's and scooters are also readily available at the Club or in town.

St. George is a very quiet part of Bermuda. We found that the townspeople welcomed us as Club patrons and didn't reduce us to 'tourist' - although we probably screamed of it! We attended church services at St. Peter's on Sunday morning and were happily invited into the fold and saw people from the congregation throughout the week. Staying in St. George's felt more like being in a sleepy little beach town where visitors and locals mix together. Many people who are Club members return each year adding to the atmosphere of grounded familiarity and belonging.
After a day of sightseeing in other areas of Bermuda or even just dining in Hamilton, it always felt warmly relaxing to be back at the Club with a glass of wine on the deck under the stars. The Club is a nice homebase. We thoroughly enjoyed spending our vacation time here.

My husband and I have been to Bermuda several times and stayed at many different hotels. This time we wanted to try St. Georges Club and bring our children. Upon check in Dee Dee was so friendly and informative. We were shown to our wonderful 2 story villa style cottage that was just lovely. The cottage was a little outdated but very clean and had all the amenities of a home. The kitchen was actually updated with newer appliances and cabinetry. Just outside our balcony was one of the many pools. The pools were very clean and never crowded.

We ate at the resort restaurant Griffins one night and enjoyed the food. We especially liked the free shuttle service to beaches and downtown as this saved us a lot of taxi cab fare. We also rented scooters right on the property which was convenient to explore the gorgeous island of Bermuda. This is a great place to stay with a family because it can be very expensive and hard to travel around the island with children. The shuttle service was truly wonderful! I would definitely stay at St. Georges Club in the future.

Stayed at St. George's Club. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend it.
The cottage was clean, lovely view over harbor, convenient to downtown, ferries and bus transportation. The staff were friendly and helpful. The Griffin restaurant has a new menu, new Manager, and food was delicious. We traveled by ferry and bus to Hamilton and beaches. Crystal caves was beautiful and the Aquarium/Zoo was well worth spending time.

My husband, mom and myself recently spent 10 days at the St. George's Club in Bermuda. It is a beautiful spot in a great location (10 min. taxi ride from airport) with spotless well-equipped 'cottages' and spectacular views.

The staff from the front desk (Dee Dee and Amy,) Griffin's Restaurant Manager (Perry,) and all the maintenance and housekeeping did their utmost to make our stay enjoyable.
One of the housekeeping staff stopped by periodically to refresh the vase of tropical flowers she gave to mom at the beginning of our trip (saying she loved seniors).

The Club is located right in St. George's which is a quaint town loaded with history and an enjoyable place to stroll without the usual onslaught of tourists (at least when we were there in April) and there are several restaurants to choose from. Scooter rentals are available on site and buses run regularly to Hamilton, but be prepared for about a 40 min. bus ride.

We dined at Griffin's Restaurant on site several times, but unfortunately, Blackbeard's hadn't yet reopened after undergoing winter renovations.

The municipal course which is beside the St. George's Club is now basically closed (although a few people were walking on and playing). However, if you're coming to play golf we wouldn't recommend it so be prepared to take a taxi from The Club to one of the more beautiful courses.

Definitely a place to which we'll return. Thanks everyone for a wonderful trip! Maggie
