Description: Charlie’s Bar & Restaurant was founded on September 18, 1941 by a Dutch couple, Charles and Marie Brouns. They chose their location in San Nicolas as it was close to the large Lago Refinery: this provided a steady stream of clientele in the form of seamen, contractors, and oil workers.Over the years, Charlie’s Bar became a destination returned to by countless friends from the past, accompanied by new patrons anxious to visit what has become an iconic island institution…”If you haven’t been to Charlie’s you don’t know Aruba!”Today, Charlie’s Bar is recognized as one of the Top Ten Bars in the Caribbean; and is a must see destination for first time visitors who will undoubtedly encounter and enjoy the company of many repeat clientele from literally all over the world. Everyone comes for the ambiance; the real connoisseurs are here to enjoy the intercontinental cuisine offered by Charlie’s Menu. Everything from jumbo shrimp to fine tenderloin steaks and fresh local seafood are at your beck and call. The menu is varied and prepared fresh each and every day try our “Honeymoon Sauce” with your entrée (if you like things real hot) or tone it down with our Creole style of preparation. Daily specials and home made snacks round out the menu for the inquisitive diner.Presently, your host, Charlito (the third generation Charlie) says, “Everything we do is focused on one thing, creating an unforgettable memory that will leave you wanting to return.”

“An Aruban Original”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2011

Charlie's Bar has been a San Nicolaas institution since 1941. It was once a sailor bar, serving crews on the oil tankers and whaling ships that came to the harbor. Now, it is a tourist-type place, but not a franchise joint such as those that dominate the other side of the island. Here the drinks are reasonably priced and the other customers friendly and fun. Don't look for fancy beverages; this is more a shot and a beer place. Still, good for a chat, check out all the memorabilia hanging about, and enjoy.

“Experience the real Aruba”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2011

This is a great place to go and get away from the fake tourist type restaurant. Great atmosphere, friendly staff. I have been there a few times but it is like a small town, they recognize me. Good service and the food is good, home style. Not your run of the mill place. A must see and experience. Great Margaritas too!!

“Must Visit”

A unique experience. Fun environment and very friendly service. Food is good as well. Not the typical "touristy" Caribbean restaurant.

“Tourist Trap”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2011

Save your time and your money. This old bar is nothing more than a tourist trap; a place where you can have lunch and a couple of beers for $40.

“Great place to hang out in Aruba-away from the crowds!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 14, 2011

Charlie's Bar was hard to find the first night, but well worth it! Once we found it, we went there three nights in a row (until we left Aruba). We were just there for a week, and wish we would have found Charlie's earlier. The service was great - and we had lots of fun talking to the bartender. Charlie himself was also great!
