“In the end: great !”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2010

Divi Phoenix has a new set of apartments (build 2008 / 2009) that are excellent. We had a great time ! Beach is great ! Food in the Pure Beach Pool Bar/ Resto and Sunset Bistro (great place to sit) should be better.

However there is also a set of older smelly rooms, a.o. in the high rise tower. Although we explicitly booked the new apartments, which was confirmed in advance, we were given twice an old room by the reception before we had a good apartment. Instructions for the room equipment (phone, dryer, jacuzzi) were not available. Maintenance was slow. Personal is friendly and polite but slow. A Yes is not always a Yes. When a problem is raised reception tends to disappear for 5 or ten minutes and still not provide a solution. It appeared to me that the receptionists were not backed by their management. Internet prices are ridiculous: 15 dollar / day)

From the time we checked in until checkout 15 days later everything was perfect . One does not have to leave the property to enjoy a 5 star vacation. The food is outstanding and priced very reasonable, we enjoyed the deli being open 24 hrs. Most important the help tends to your every need .with a smile. The ocean is less than 50 yds from the hotel and the pools less.

This was our 3rd time at Divi Aruba Phoenix and the 2nd time staying in the new towers. This is a beautiful property, nice pool, beach, location and rooms that are well appointed. However, I have to agree with some of the other posts about the smell of mold. Last year, we complained about a moldy smell around the kitchen area and had management come several times to spray the area and check it out. To no avail! This time (room 833), we were in a different building and had the same problem but the smell of mold seemed to be coming from the dresser draws. I know people leave their balcony doors open when the a/c is on and this doesn't help but the condition seems to be common. For buildings that are so new, this problem should be investigated by the management and the contractors. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and might try the older tower the next time we visit. Hopefully, these units are being renovated.

This was our 3rd stay with Divi on Aruba. Since the construction has been completed things are even better. The new areas are nicely done including the new rooms. The staff was very friendly and accomodating, no complaints. Great ocean views from every room. Both pools were kept very clean as well as the beach area.

This was our third trip to Aruba but our first stay at The Divi since we purchased our timeshare last year. Check-in was very simple and we were given a complimentary upgrade. At first I thought the hotel was trying to get us to either upgrade our current week permanently or buy another week at the resort. But I found out the island was hit with downpours a few weeks ago and the top two floors in the old tower sustained water damage and the room we "own" was under repair. So that was a very nice surprise.

We were in room 613 (first floor in the newer section) by the pool which is a 1 bedroom with 2 full baths. The master bedroom was a nice size with king size bed and a flat screen tv. There was more than enough storage between the dressers and the full size closte. The master bath had an over-size stall shower and the counter tops were granite. The second bath had a stall shower and a seperate jacuzzi tub. The kitchen had all the latest appliances (stainless steel) and the living room had a pull-out sofa ( that we did not use) and a flat screen tv. The sliders in the living room gave you access to a patio-type sitting area outside with lounge chairs and a few steps away was the pool area. We left the slider open all day while we were at the pool so we could go in and out as we plased.

The resort was not crowded the week of October 16th and we were able to get any chair at the pool we wanted. Now the beach was a little different story. One morning I set my alarm for 6:40am and there were only 2 palapas left to be had. But I was able to snag one in the front row and we were happy with that. But I wasn't about to get up early again for a spot on the beach. Personally I feel the palapas are a little close together but you're not right on top of your neighbor. One of the hotel reps told me they were looking into building another jetty and filling that area in with more sand so they can offermore seats on the beach. I also noticed some people had reserved 2 spots - one at the pool and one on the beach so that may account for the overcrowding at the beach.

The first night we arrived at the hotel we took advantage of the all you can eat bbq buffet. We were tired from the early flight and hanging at the pool all day so we decided to give it a try. For $20/pp the food was ok. They offered chicken and ribs, corn on the cob, plantains, satay beef skewers, salad and a few other dishes. Would I go back? Probably not. There was nothing wrong with the food but I know we would have been happier had we gone out to one of the restaurants we like. We felt the same about the breakfast buffet - for $11/pp you get eggs made to order, assorted breads, bacon, sausage, breakfast potatoes and fruit. We ate there twice. Again, the food was fine but we were much happier when we went out for breakfast. If you're looking to stay at the resort an eat you can definately do that. There's also a 24 hour deli by the pool that has an assortment of drinks and sandwiches and snacks that were very tasty and reasonably priced. Good ice cream, too. We also had lunch at the pool bar a few times - I recommend the burger or the chicken tenders.

The only poblem we had was with housekeeping. Every day we were brought fresh towels for our room and the garbage cans were emptied as needed. But they missed our day of the week for full service cleaning (fresh sheets, washing dishes, cleaning floors etc...) We forgot what day they were supposed to come so on Wednesday afternoon I called to ask about this and the woman told me my day was Tuesday. I told her the maid never changed the sheets etc...and within a few minutes they sent someone down to do a full service cleaning.

Overall we are very happy we bought at The Divi Phoenix and are definately looking forward to going back next year.

After reading the reviews on here I was a little concerned about staying here but since we only booked 2 days beforehand there wasn't many choices of accomodation left. I got a great deal and couldn't have been happier. Our rep explained why people complain about the smell in many Aruban hotels - because the country has such high humidity when people leave the doors open the condensation gets in making the room damp thus creating the smell. She told us never to leave the doors open and to leave the air con on all the time so the room is ventilated. We did this and had no problems with smell at all.
We had a one bedroom which is bigger than a studio and has an extra window. We were on the 4th floor in the new building and could lay in bed and look out the window at our sea view. It was beautiful. We had 2 bathrooms, one with a huge corner jacuzzi in it. The kitchen had a breakfast bar, a great micro-oven, electric can opener, way more equipment than we needed. The shop in the lobby sells quite cheap porridge, cereal etc so you can stay here quite cheap. We went out every evening for a meal at a different restaurant along the strip, all within easy walking distance. The hotel is in a quiet location but only takes 10 mins to walk to the start of the restaurants and then there are many, plus stalls selling nice trinkets etc. If you did want to cook your own evening meal there are BBQs for use around the pool area.
It's great that you can drink the water here, that saved us money too. If you go to the old building pool there are cups and a water cooler where you can help yourself to water anytime. Oh and the hammocks on the beach are the most comfy ones I've ever laid in. Could have fallen asleep in those all day!
The only complaint I would have is that the gym needs the equipment updating. Out of 6 treadmills only 2 worked; 5 bikes and only 1 works etc. A large gym was one of the reasons I wanted to stay here but I was very disappointed to see out of order signs on almost everything!
I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone of all ages.

Let me start by saying this was our first trip to Aruba, we really loved the island, we had perfect weather, no rain at all! We liked the location of the Phoenix and the beach was good sized not too big not too small, plenty of chairs to be had with shade, and not crowded like some of the other hotels in the high rise section. ONE MAJOR let down, however, was the gym, looking at the website video it appears to be " state of the art", nope during our stay 2 out of 7 treadmills were working, and they only had 2 elipticals, plus there appeared to be NO AC in the facility , it was like a sauna. The other issue we had was the slow service at the bar at pure beach. The first day we got there we were starved so we went to the bar for a bite and a beer, with 5 people behind the bar it took us a good 15 minutes to be acknowledged. The food was good once we were waited on and decided we would be better off to pick up some Balashi for the fridge. Other guests we talked to during the week said the same thing. The rooms were clean, and comfy, nice kitchen, beautiful bath but not well insulated as we could hear entire conversations next door.We were lucky that we only had people next to us for 2 nights and they werent up too late. We did like the location because we had a bus stop out the door and we were far enough away from the noise but close enough to join the fun. I would tell anyone who had never been to the island to take the bus tour with De Palm, well worth the money to be in the nice AC bus and lunch was good. I want to add that the staff at the hotel ( other than the bar) were all so nice and extremely helpful!!
