Marriott's Aruba Ocean Club
Ranked #11 of 24 Hotels in Palm - Eagle Beach
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed December 16, 2008

My husband and I stayed at the Marriott Aruba Ocean Club December 8 through December 14, 2008. I used Marriott Rewards points for our entire stay in a one bedroom villa. We had a nice ocean view with a large balcony to enjoy the gorgeous sunsets. We enjoyed the nice pool and very private hot tub. My husband went diving for 4 days and 1 evening dive with JADS and liked the personal service. The staff were cordial and professional and very friendly. This was our first time to Aruba. It is a long way from San Diego! I checked out some of the other hotels on Palm Beach and if we come again I would like to stay at the Hyatt; the beach was very nice in front of the Hyatt. If you are a family with children I would suggest staying next door at the Surf Club.

We just returned from one week at the Ocean Club. We stayed in a 2 bedroom villa which includes 2 full bathrooms, a full kitchen and a nice size living room. Very comfortably fit 4 adults and could hold more for sure. We spent a good amount of time at the beach palapas but also ventured out and explored the island. The beach at this resort is not all that great, the water is cloudy and there is definitely some sludgy stuff on the bottom. There is no noticable smell coming from the water as some people have stated. However, when we wanted to hit the beach, we hopped in the rental car and went to several other beaches: Eagle, Catalina, Baby and Arashi. Each of those was better than the beach at the hotel. The pool at the hotel was really nice, plenty of room for everyone with lots of litte places to get away from the crowds. Although I would not say there were crowds, there was no problem getting a good poolside or beach palapa anytime of day. We didn't have many meals at the hotel but utilzed the kitchen for most breakfasts, lunches and 2 dinners. The market in Ocean Club is 2x the price of the Surf Club market so if you need something, take the 5 minutes to walk next door. Also, they claim you can use the Surf Club's pool and lazy river BUT you need a wrist band and they will kick you out. The people at Ocean Club were definitely a more "mature" crowd as in it seemed more older couples than the Surf Club which had a lot of families with children. Also the Sutf Club has nearly 2x the rooms as Ocean club so there are a lot more people at the pool which really isn't much if any bigger than the Ocean Club. We would return to the Ocean club as we really enjoyed our stay, the only negative being the less than ideal beach on-site.

My fiance stayed a week at a one bedroom villa. It was spacious and included a full kitchen. We were given a unit on the first floor but requested a higher floor since we had no view. The very next day we were switched to the 4th floor with a partial ocean view. What a difference in the view since you can wake up with your coffee seeing the beautiful ocean. If you are a couple I suggest the Ocean Club over the Surf Club since the Surf is overrun with kids and families. Since this is a timeshare, there are no maid service but somehow we came back one night to see that a maid came in to clean our place and even did our dishes. There is a laundry facility on every floor which is helpful. I would suggest bringing salt, pepper, and other spices if you are planning to cook. That way, you can just buy food and don't have to waste money.
We did not rent a car and felt that we didn't need to. Since we did a jeep tour, we saw the whole island and didn't need to rent a car. Since the bus is $1.30 one way and even cheaper round trip, we saved a bundle. It's clean, efficient and takes you everywhere you need to go.

The Marriott Ocean club is not a "hotel" as many reviewers have called it. It is a timeshare! If patrons go to the Ocean Club believing it is a hotel, they will be highly disappointed. Also, the Ocean Club is not part of the adjoinining time share, so no, you cannot use their pool, nor the chairs on the beach---would you expect to be able to do this at a "hotel"? of course not!

This is a beautiful property, right on the beach. The perfect place for R and R! There are many things to do on the island if that is your choice! A rental car is highly recommended as the cost of a taxi to and from the airport roughly = 1/2 the price of a weeks rental.

But please stop calling it a hotel!

My family (elderly parents, husband, and 2 kids under 5) stayed at the Ocean club from October 4-18th. I used Marriott points to book a 2 bedroom villa and a one bedroom villa. I was happy to see upon check in that they had placed us as close to the ocean as possible, before the ocean front rooms began. As previous writers have advised, this hotel really doesn't have ocean view rooms, unless you get the ocean front. Our rooms overlooked the Iguana Sancuary, which was very peaceful and well groomed.

The staff at the Ocean Club was wonderful! Room service was always prompt (free if it doesn't arrive within 45 minutes), and the food was decent. Actually, we got one of the best filet mignon's during the vacation off of the room service menu! And the prices are no more than at a full service Marriott in the states.

We had no troubles finding chairs around the pool or shade on the beach. There were always open bar stools at the swim up bar!

Shopping was a treat. We ended up pushing the Aruban economy at Kay's Jewerly store downtown. Sunny (son of the owner) and Larry took great care of us and provided us with a wonderful deal on quality pieces of jewerly. We did have to mill around while they lowered the prices about 4 times, but eventually we came to a price everyone could live with.

The Butterfly Farm was a daily event. Our 3 year old loved walking around and talking to the butterflies. Once you pay the enterence fee, the remaining visits are free for you and your family.

We ate at Simply Fish one night - just my husband and I. The food was decent, not delicious. I had the fish of the day (grooper), which was better than his chicken he ordered off the regular menu. Service was just OK, but the view was excellent, and you can't beat dining with your feet in the sand!

We went to Ling and Sons for groceries frequently. If you are feeling local, you can save quite a bit by going to the grocery stores the locals seem to frequent - Kongs and Super foods, both were located right off of LG Smith road.

The island is great fun to explore. We rented a Toyota Corolla from the hotel lobby (budget rental car), and were plesently surprised to find that the cost for two weeks was under $400 for two drivers. We drove through the Donkey Sanctuary, over to the rock formations, and beyond to the natural bridge. It took about a day, but was well worth it! The rock formations are incredible, and the far side of the island actually looks very different than you would suspect. It reminded my parents of the Western Coast of Ireland!!!!

We also went to Baby Beach for a day. It was still beautiful and calm. Since it rained 11 of the 14 days we were on the island, it wasn't very crowded at the beach.

Yes - we had rain almost every day, and last week we were hit with Tropical Storm Omar - which flooded out the hotel, the town, and all of the roads were closed off except for the bus system. Even with all of the drama going on I would still recomend Aruba and the Ocean Club to all!

Things to bring: coffee, nuts, blow up toys for the kids, baggies to store food in, snacks. The Ocean Club now supplies all of the rooms with a starter pack of coffee, dish detergent, daily dishwasher tablets, and 1 box of laundery detergent.

Have a great time in paradise!

Visited at the end of September. The plan was to stay 1 week in a 2 BR at the Ocean Club and then 1 week at the Surf Club. I fell in love with the Ocean Club and found a way to stay put!

Rooms
The 2 Bedroom unit is really nice. Lots of space, decent sized kitchen -- which is nice for breakfast and quick lunches. The master has a whirlpool. Only downside is that there are no washers and dryers in the units --- however they are down the hall if you really need them. We got really lucky on view. For the first week, we had one of the ocean front rooms ---- perfect place to watch the sunset. 2nd week was ocean view, but still a nice place to sit with a cup of coffee or happy hour beverage and enjoy the view. Beds were comfortable. Had a couple of issues with airconditioning, but they were addressed.

Beach / Pool
Wow! As long as you know to reserve your palapas in the morning, you'll have no issue. Even when we weren't down til 9, we had no issue getting space. Great breezes and decent coverage by the pool bar staff --- however, you also have the option of taking a small collapsable cooler and bringing your own beverages down. The iguanas around the pool are lots of fun to watch. Easy access to the local watersports vendors for whatever you want to try.

Spa
Tried out the Mandara Spa. Women's locker room under construction, so a little strange..... Treatments were excellent, although expensive (but it is a resort area). Service at the counter in the spa was a little questionable -- but once you were inside, they took really good care of you.

Restaurants/shops
Simply Fish and Ruth Chris were all we tried --- those were excellent. The ice cream in the cafe was also good. Tropical Market was WAY overpriced, but if you didn't want to take the time to grab something at the grocery store, it did the job. Retail shops weren't as friendly as I would have expected.

Casino
Next door at the Stellaris, casino was fun. Very busy / full in the evenings --- we found that we won more, and were kept supplied with drinks best between 3 and 5. If you keep looking, there ARE slots here that pay -- fairly consistently.

Service
Overall, I couldn't have asked for better service. Any staff member you met in the hall was friendly and asked about your vacation. The front desk was very efficient and friendly --- the day we switched rooms, they knew us by sight and had our keys ready. Whenever requests were made for issues / supplies in the room, they were dealt with promptly and followup calls were made to ensure that the issue was addressed.

In terms of timeshare vacations, I don't often go back to the same place --- this is an exception!

On the whole pretty good, a couple of incidents like the air conditioning breaking and fridge that didn't work but both were fixed quickly. Location couldn't be better. Most rooms seem to have a so so view of the ocean but only a few look directly out on to it. Staff were a little luke-warm, not super friendly but helpful enough.
