Description: Henri Charrière, one of the world’s most famous prisoners, would surely have had the time of his life at Papillon Restaurant in The Village, across from the Radisson Resort. Nicknamed Papillon because of the butterfly tattoo on his chest, he was the first convict to escape from Devil’s Island. Charrière’s thrilling, gripping autobiography has been the concept behind Papillon Restaurant.Papillon Restaurant’s menu reflects the Frenchman’s arduous journey to freedom: classic French dishes have been dusted with daring Caribbean flair and are a culinary journey for your taste buds. The spacious outside terrace is perfect for casual fine dining or one may enjoy the air-conditioned inside dining space.

the staff were pleasant and helpful. the restaurant is in a mall like area, behind senor frogs. decor was nice. the menu looked promising, but the food was quite bland, which suprised me due to all the positive reviews. the escargot came in a pastry, but the sauce was oily and not flavorful, the snapper was in some type of tomato based sauce and tasted odd (metallic). the tuna trio was ok. perhaps we came on an off night, but I would say the meal at Amuse was better, and comparable in price.

The menu selection at Papillon was overwhelmingly tempting. We had great difficulty deciding on only a few dishes for ourselves. Our friendly server offered us a customized 7-course meal. She surprised us with appetizers: beef tartare, a tuna trio, lobster bisque and foie gras. Then, came petite versions of our entree choices: triple tail on saffron angel hair pasta and deer with a shiitake mushroom sauce. As the dinner went on, each dish was increasingly more interesting and impressive. Two wines and one cocktail were recommended to accompany the meal. We finished with lime cheesecake and a frozen espresso. As you can tell by the extensive list above, much thought and time went into selecting and preparing the well structured and quality food. Personal touches were evident and much appreciated by this honeymooning couple. The only unfortunate circumstance is that senior frog is so close and loud. Still, the atmosphere the Papillon created for us was quite enjoyable. Its small size inspires an exclusive and intimate feel, while it's street-level open-air dining room is welcoming and accessible.

From the time we were greeted to the time we were leaving, there is absolutely no negative comments that I can even think of.
Greeted and seated immediately, made reservation inside, but after seeing the place, likes the outside better, so we were seated outside without a question. Service was top notch - every dish explained in detail including the origin of the beef and fish, wine list explained and a server actually picked a less expensive wine from two choices I gave him explaining the reasons why he thoug it would go better with our order. The servers were from Holland - guys and girls working in Aruba for the holiday season. Extremely personable, very attentive, and cordial.
Onion soup was excellent. Foie gras was very tasty. For the main course we had halibut and tenderloin. I don't remember the way halibut was prepared, but two pieces of tenderloin were wrapped in bacon and grilled (medium) in red wine and mushroom sauce with truffled mashed potatoes. Both dishes were magnificent.
Location - central to the hotel area. We stayed at Divi Phoenix - 10 min walk or so or a 3 min cab ride ($6). The restaurant is in the area with many other restaurants and gift shops, it's not on the beach, it's across the street from Radisson.

We just recently spent two weeks on Aruba--our 25th visit--and this was by far the most disappointing evening of our vacation. After all of the wonderful reviews, we expected the experience to be enjoyable. The restaurant is set back and there really isn't any breeze, so we were very hot. There are three overhead fans, but they need at least double that number. Our appetizers and wine were good, but our entrees which were the specials of the evening--sautéed skate wing and angel hair w/squid ink--were so salty that they were almost not edible. When we told our waiter, he just shrugged. The hostess eventually offered us a free dessert, but we were so uncomfortably hot, we just wanted to leave. So, that coupled with the heat and a $200 bill for a dinner we didn't enjoy just isn't acceptable or something we can recommend. We will not return.
