“Eugene R. General Manager Breakfast Buffet”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

Eugene R. is the GM of the buffet at Occidental Grand in Aruba. This was our first trip to Aruba and definitely not our last. Eugene R. is an EXCEPTIONAL GM! He is kind, efficient, dedicated and welcoming every morning for the breakfast buffet. All the staff is exceptional but Eugene R was the standout of the week! Thanks Eugene for making the trip one of our favorites ever!

Room Tip: Enjoyed pool and ocean view on the 6th floor, tower one. Music at pool didn't start too early or...

Initial check in at 1330, and room wasn't ready. We took an alternative room, which was one floor down. Our resort "Orientation" consisted of a very nice, articulate young man telling us about the gifts we will receive after we sit through the Vacation Club presentation. (By the way...they weren't "gifts" per se, just discounts on external excursions/tours.) There was absolutely no effort on any of the staff's part to educate us on the perks of the "all inclusive" resort. (The resort isn't really ALL inclusive like the Sandals Resorts are.) We were escorted to a room which was...well...tired. Very tired. We were pre-scheduled for dinner reservations for the entire week, with 4 nights at their sit down restaurants, and the remaining 3 nights at the buffet(s). Food was disappointing to say the least. The Italian restaurant and the Asian Restaurant were the cuisine highlights of the resort. We eventually queried other guests and discovered which activities were available and included in the resort (something that should have been done on day one by hotel staff, in my opinion). Bottom line: there are a lot of options on Palm Beach, Aruba. We were underwhelmed by this resort. We were approached every day (sometimes twice a day) by staff trying to schedule us for the timeshare/vacation club presentation. This was not an inexpensive vacation. If they had spend any time "wowwing" us on day one, the resort and the timeshare/club would have sold itself. Instead, we were relentlessly pursued by staff trying to sell us the "good life". Sorry...no thanks!

Room Tip: Not really sure that's an option unless you are in the "Club". I would try 4th floor...

Dear Lou S,

Thaking your time to share with us your feedback. Please accept our most sincere apologies for the inconveniences you had during your stay. I deeply regret that we have not met your expectations.

Also, thank for your feedback regarding the behavior of the Occidental Vacation Club team, and for reporting this situation. We will report this to the correspondant department, and take the proper mesures in this matter.

It is really disappointing to read that our culinary offerings fell so short of your expectations. We strive to offer a variety of choices at our breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets, including an array of fresh fruits and cereals and various food stations including a carving table, seafood station, omelet station, etc. We will speak to the Food & Beverage Manager about your feedback.

We apologize for the inconveniences that you encountered with your room, our housekeeping team always verifies that all equipment in rooms work properly and ensure their cleanness before welcoming new guests. I have shared your feedback with the maintenance and housekeeping team, who assured me that they are looking into ways to improve our service and ensure all equipment and amenities are functioning properly.

It is with great concern that we learn about your impressions. We have addressed your concerns with our team in order to take the necessary corrective actions and we sincerely hope to have a second chance to host you so you can fully experience our exceptional service and characteristic hospitality.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Occidental and we would return again. We were able to relax from the moment we stepped into the lobby. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. The pool, hot tubs, and access to the beach were all top notch. We were always able to put our towels over chairs and "reserve" a nice palapa in the morning for a great view of the beautiful blue water. Palm Beach was a great location with easy access to activities and sail boat tours, but not overly crowded or noisy. The all inclusive aspect of the hotel is easy and convenient, but the food was a little uninspiring. We ate breakfast outside every morning and were able to enjoy a view of the pool and a group of iguanas that sunned themselves on the rocks every day. We enjoyed the Asian (sushi, hibachi, and Thai) and Caribbean restaurants the most, but didn't make it to the Italian restaurant, which we learned later may be the best. The Mexican restaurant was disappointing (especially given the proximity to South America). My advice is stick with seafood! I wish the chefs would decrease the quantity, focus on quality, and incorporate more local dishes. The rooms were clean and the fridge was restocked with water, soda, and the local beer every other day. We would return but might venture out more for dinner.

Room Tip: Having a view of the pool and ocean was really nice but we spent very little time in the room.

Arriving at hotel first impressions were very good, our luggage was taken and we were escorted to reception. We were asked if we wanted to upgrade to the Royal floors which would cost an additional $700 for the two weeks we were staying. In doing this our room would be on the 8th floor, we would have free WiFi, use of the exec lounge and priority for the hotels signature restaurants. The upgrade was worth it though in our room we could not receive WiFi and even after two weeks of talking with the staff and being issued various codes I still could not get it. I could however, get it everywhere else on the complex. The rooms were very comfortable, we were disappointed with our maid as our room was never made up before 4.00pm and we like to have a siesta around that time and she never left us toiletries, we had to ask for replacements on more than one occasion. The all inclusive dining was outstanding with the exception of the Mexican restaurant which we thought was below par. The Italian and Japanese restaurants were as good as any stand alone establishments. The pool and beach areas were very good and the supply of fresh towels had no limits. The bar area was clean and very comfortable, and on an evening the hotel had two very good entertainers, the bar itself was a little small though functional. In summary would I go back, yes I would and in truth I probably will.........

Room Tip: Ask for a pool side room, all rooms have sea veiws but the back of the hotel looks out over the serv...

After reading some of the reviews I must admit we were nervous about our decision to stay at the all inclusive Occidental. From the moment we arrived to the day we left we never questioned or regretted our decision!! The Occidental was GRAND!! On arrival as soon as we stepped in to the lobby we were welcomed by hotel greeters with hot towels to wash up and a glass of chilled tropical fruit punch, then escorted to the front desk to check in. SInce it was early and our room was not ready a hospitality suite was offered. We changed, had a delicious buffet lunch and then enjoyed the remainder of the sunny afternoon at the pool. Top shelf liquor is readily available in the lobby, at the pool or beach and always with a smile! All employees were more then happy to accommodate our every need. For example, every night we had 4 waters delivered to our room! Our room was a deluxe category. Clean with a king size bed, spacious bathroom and shower overlooking the pool. The restaurants were outstanding. We absolutely disagree with travelers who complained about the food. We found every meal to be better than the last...Italian, The Beach Party, Desire (The Carribean restaurant) and our favorite Zen, Japanese! The breakfast and lunch buffet offer more than enough options. The food is simply superb. The beach is perfectly located in the middle of the high rise section and the huts are nicely spaced allowing for privacy. We had only one complaint and it was the casino ...with the slot machines broken waiting to get your cash back took upwards of twenty five minutes!! We enjoyed the casino's at neighboring hotels after the first night due to this malfunction (of two weeks) of the machines! Despite this one flaw, we will undoubtedly return to The Occidental Grand in Aruba!

Wonderful family vacation. We upgraded to suite on the top floor with a ocean view and it was HUGE. A large living room with kitchen and large beautifully decorated bedroom with big balcony. Very clean rooms and hotel overall. Service was great, but as with most all-inclusives the food/drink is lackluster. It is family-friendly but as with most all-inclusives the bar areas can get loud and rowdy by late afternoon. Highlights in terms of food were the ceviche and lobster tail at the Caribbean themed restaurant. Highlight in terms of the entire vacation is the entertainment team. They are ridiculously amazing. The shows at other resorts we have stayed at have been just ok, the shows here are outstanding. These are some of the most talented dancers, singers, and acrobats I have seen anywhere.
