“Long Overdue”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2012

This review is long, long overdue. Just moments ago the wife and I finished booking a vacation to The Amsterdam Manor for this coming August. In 2010 The Amsterdam Manor and Lissy Lampe were host and planner for our wedding held on your beach. The wedding was small, roughly 35 friends and family gathered together at sunset on June, 26th 2010. The ceremony was perfect, the sunset was perfect, the weather was perfect, the reception was fun and the food was great. Nothing better in my humble opinion the spending such a perfect day with friends and family on One Happy Island. The wife and I spent 8 days in the honeymoon suit and could not have asked for better service. The room was perfect, a mix of luxury and comfort that made us feel right at home, the added little gift of sunburn lotion came in very handy for out two little nieces. The pool was being redone the last two days of out stay but the pool was not our main concern with such a lovely beach just a short walk away. The way i look at it the work being done on the pool was something i get to look forward to this time. If you do stay at this hotel please be sure to make a reservation at Passions, the meal was awesome and i am looking forward to dinning on the beach at sunset again this year. Well, i have said enough and i am looking forward to seeing you again this coming August.

We stayed a few nights in Aruba as a stopover from Jamaica to Suriname. I must confess that I did not do much research for this part of our trip & had not realised that Aruba is really just one giant beach resort dominated by high rise hotels & colossal cruise ships. The Amsterdam Manor with its eccentric three storey architecture does, therefore, stand out as somewhat different. Guide books & some TA reviewers comment on its "European" feel; it does have many Dutch guests but otherwise seemed to me as US orientated as the rest of the island.

We were upgraded to a nice ground floor one bedroom suite on the edge of the property which was relatively quiet & secluded. Many other rooms do not have much privacy opening onto public areas like the pool.

The staff were professionally pleasant in an impersonal "Have a nice day" way but we missed the more genuine warmth & friendliness which we had just left in Jamaica. One day my wife mentioned to the receptionist that I was not very well & still in bed. "Have a great day!" was his parting remark.

In Aruban restaurants we encountered bills which added a 15% service charge with a printed explanation that as this was distributed to all the staff we should also give a tip. I assume that this was to go only to the dish carriers but not the dish washers let alone the people who actually cooked your meal. This might explain the chaotic service we experienced at the hotel's "Passions on the Beach" restaurant. We noticed that some waiting staff seemed to spend most of their time talking to their new "best friends", presumably big tipping previous customers.

We hired a car & it was easy enough to get around the often busy roads. A drive through the Arikok National Park was the highlight of our trip. Oranjestad with its numerous gift shops for cruise ship passengers is congested & missable although the Taj Mahal restaurant in Havenstraat was surprisingly good. The Super Food Supermarket has a good bakery & many Dutch groceries.

In summary we felt that Aruba had little Caribbean character, in fact little character at all. It does offer unthreatening, undemanding beach holidays convenient for visitors from the USA. If that is what you are looking for the Amsterdam Manor seems a good choice especially if you can afford a suite.

Quaint, clean, and quiet...perfect hotel for getting away from it all...on the best spot on the best beach in Aruba. If you are looking for glitzy high rises or a kiddie theme park...look elsewhere. If you want a peaceful and home like atmosphere...look no further. Just spent a week there (Feb 11-18) and loved it! Yes...the beach gets a little busy occasionally when cruise ships are in but only for a few hours and even then we had plenty of room to enjoy ourselves...and it was never was as crowded as the high rise hotel beaches.

The hotel staff and especially Mayra, the concierge, were friendly and helpful. Food at both restaurants was very good but we especially enjoyed our Valentine's Day dinner on the beach at Passions. Outstanding food, service, and the ambiance was off the charts. Fine dining with your toes in the sand watching the sunset is as good as it gets for romantic dinners.

The only thing I would change would be to add an on-site spa. There are several spas within a short distance but having one on premises would be a great addition. Would gladly stay here again.

My wife and I just returned from an eight night stay at the Amsterdam Manor and we were greatly impressed. The staff from the manager, the concierge, the front desk, the different maids, and the maintenance/restaurant/beach personnel were very attentive, gracious and accommodating. We stayed in a superior suite and even though the facility was quite booked the manager was able to meet our request to move to a more private suite away from the pool/restaurant area.

I had read the hotel reviews on Tripadvisor prior to our booking and can offer these experiences. We stayed in room 6C. We never had any condensation problem. The room had a dehumidifier and we could set the AC at a comfortable setting. We turned the AC fan to the low setting and turned the dehumidifier off when we went to sleep and turned it back on when we awakened. The room was comfortable and the balcony on our second floor was nice giving us a view of the beach and the sea across the way. The shower size was fine and I never bumped and turned the water off accidentally by moving around in the shower. The mattress in the room was more firm then we are used to but we could sleep just fine. The beach area was immediately across a non-busy street and steps from the resort. The beach area was clean and the hotel had a machine that they would use to sift and clean the sand. Some guests who were smokers would put their cigarettes out in the sand and would not pick them up and put them in the refuse containers that were placed out every day for that purpose when they were leaving. I am an early riser and I never had a problem getting a palapa for the day for shade. People who arrived late in the morning may or may not have had access to a palapa depending on the day. On a few days cruise ships would come to Aruba and guests on the cruise ship would come to Eagle Beach. Resort personnel kept them from invading our space even though some were a little pushy. I thought the Amsterdam Manor personnel handled it well. We never encountered a mosquito while we were there, perhaps that is something during the rain season. In regard to the restaurants at Amsterdam Manor we had a dinner and breakfast at Mangos. We also had a lunch at the beach where the restaurant serves during the middle of the day. The food was very good. We had dinner at Passions on the Beach for the last night of our stay. The food was great, our waiter was very personable and the sunset was, as always, terrific!

Some thoughts on where to stay in Aruba. The beach is always an important part for us in where we stay as we like to spend several of our days on the beach de-stressing. Eagle Beach, where the low rise hotels are located, was awesome with its sand like sugar and never hot. You could always walk on it barefooted. At the high-rise hotels we walked the length of Palm Beach along the sidewalk next to the beach past all of the resorts. We found the beach area to be very small and crowded. Definitely not the beach experience that we enjoyed at Amsterdam Manor.

My wife and I escape the Michigan winter each year to a warm weather destination and we like to try somewhere new each year. The weather in Aruba, which is near the equator, was perfect with a continual wind keeping it comfortable. We have decided to go to the nearby island of Curacao next February due to the perfect weather. After looking at how flights would be getting there and discovering that there are flights all day long from Aruba to Curacao we decided that we would go back to Aruba for part of our vacation next year and take a convenient 30 minute flight from Aruba to Curacao for the balance of our vacation. We will definitely be staying at the Amsterdam Manor next year as part of our plans.

this used to be a nice quiet hotel and beach area.. management only cares about how many cruise ship people and tour people they can jam onto the beach so that they can rent chairs and and sell food and bev. at the beach bar. the paying guests at the hotel have to put up with a packed beach . no more peace and quiet at this beach . what a shame

What we like about the hotel:
- excellent customer service (staff are genuinely helpful)
- most clientele are quiet and considerate people
- Right on Eagle Beach which is calm, no big waves; sandy beach, hardly stepping over stones
- close to a few supermarkets e.g. Super Food, 5-10 mins car ride from hotel. Sell great Dutch cheese and bakeries, yum!)
- has kitchen and all necessities, can easily make own breakfast or meals
- Mango is surprisingly good (had snapper and grouper); changed my bias towards hotel restaurant
- lastly, big thanks to Julio, the front desk staff! Thanks for the complimentary bubbly! We're very touched!

Usually we like to keep trying new places but we may indeed come back again with this very positive experience. Two thumbs up!

Room Tip: We have a studio in the B area (internal courtyard). Since it's not facing the ocean (which also...
