“My favourite hotel”
Reviewed August 8, 2014

I have visited this hotel twice in the past few years, and it remains one of my favourite hotels in the world. The view from the lobby takes some beating and the setting is ideal. My first visit was quite a few years ago and my most recent saw a change in Aruba which was a bit disappointing - much more commercial and a bit more like Florida, a bit less like the charming Caribbean island of old. However, on both occasions, the hotel was a beautiful experience. I love the simplicity of the rooms, the showers, the gardens and the wildlife. The beach is now much busier than it used to be which is a shame, and the second visit did involve a bit of a scrap in the morning to reserve sun beds - not much fun. The breakfasts are wonderful and the food in the restaurants is also excellent. The bar in the gardens is one of our favourites in the world - wonderful cocktails and beautiful setting. If you like diving, the location could not be better. There is a Red Sail desk in the hotel, and the dive boats leave from the hotel jetty - nice for non-divers to sip a cool drink in the afternoon whilst awaiting the return of the boats. The location is ideal for anyone who wishes to walk to the new shopping centre nearby, or take a short taxi ride to Oranjestad, which is well worth the visit.
We will absolutely return to this hotel - I miss Aruba and the Hyatt. My only (minor) gripe is the soundproofing between the rooms could be better (or other guests could be more mindful of the fact that they are in a hotel!).

The Hyatt property and location is undoubtedly the best on this beautiful island, and we would stay there again. However, having said that, there are some negatives too...

We requested an early check-in, having arrived at noon, and not only weren't obliged, but we couldn't even check-in at 4pm check-in time. At 4:45 we were finally checked in...to adjoining rooms that were occupied by people with no plans on leaving. So they put us temporarily in adjoining rooms on the floor below with a much less desirable partial ocean view. Later that evening, somehow our original rooms became available, and we packed up and relocated. The front desk associate was lovely and offered to compensate us for the trouble, saying she'd have her manager come see us about it. The manager was reluctant to come out front to see us, and when she finally did, she shot the associate quite a stare for having promised us anything for our trouble.

The hotel food is overpriced and just ok, except for Ruina Del Mar, which was worth it. Conversely, the dinner we had at Mexicado, doesn't pass for anyone's idea of a Mexican meal. Frankly, it was poor.

You can't do the beach without shade, and you can't have shade unless you get downstairs at 5:30am to wait for a palapa. We decided it was much better and easier to rent a beach cabana for the day for $50 bucks. Actually, it seemed odd that so many people would wait on such a long line for a free palapa, when for $50 bucks you can sleep in and have a much nicer cabana waiting for you.

Strange but true regarding the bathrooms...the acoustics are such that you can clearly hear the bathroom activities of your roommate from the bed. Also, no lock on the not-so-frosted bathroom door in case you want to open the door and confirm what you just heard. Finally, each bathroom has a floor to ceiling glass panel which faces the bed, with pull down blinds on the bathroom side, in case the bather wishes to be watched ?

Great restaurants on the island include (in order of preference)
Madam Janette's (unbelievably delicious)
Flying Fishbone (great food, on the beach, half hour cab ride though)
El Gaucho (great food)

Dont buy cigars...you can't bring them home without lying to Customs.

The rest of the hotel staff is terrific, wonderful local people doing a wonderful job.

Our first night there, it rained for 3 hours. The next morning, it was all anyone was talking about because it had been 2 YEARS since it had rained !! The weather really is beautiful every single day.

The drinking water is purified ocean water, and it is not only perfectly healthy to drink, but it tastes good too.

Area around the hotel is safe.

Very nice hotel. Built too close to beach front thereby causing you to arrive 4:30 am for paloppa and beach chair.
Coral, the best concerige I have ever encountered made the trip worthwhile with the readily available reservations to Carte Blanche(a must if youre in Aruba, her knowledge of the island and just seeming to know exactly where we wanted to go and when!!

Room Tip: dont think there is a bad room

July 27 I arrived at 4:30 and still had to wait for 30min because room wasn't ready. I stayed in room 346. upon entering room we notice carpet was not vacuumed properly and bathroom had a piece of toilet paper on floor, no lotion, the tub had something pink on the edge and the door was filthy. in addition there was construction going on with bob cat and hoses all over the place right next to the pool. Also due to the construction/cleanup of the pond there was a foul smell and way to many Mosquitos. So many that we weren't even able to enjoy the lobby. In addition there were No signs with a apology or anything. I have been there a few times and have always stayed at the Hyatt so I decided to let them know and for the following 7 days they kept playing phone tag. I left a msg for Fred Hoffman, who fwd it to Oriana who made an attempt to contact me but then fwd it to Michella all to get no where. I had two families come down and one was upset about the conditions and the other cancelled her reservation and went to the Ritz. It is then we found that the ritz was only 379 a night while Hyatt was charging close to $725 on off peak season while construction was going on. they gave us cheese and crackers and they sat there for 4 days before anyone came to remove them. I feel as though the service has gone down a lot. when checking out I asked for the manager and they said sorry and we gave you a free one night stay for next time. 8 Days of aggravation and 1 free night on my points. Who would go down to Aruba and spend all that money to go down for one night??!?! if you need more info contact me at anjuandb@gmail.com

We arrived with a party of 7. All pre-arranged and prepaid, we asked that all the rooms be on the same floor with specific bed types. Upon arrival no such accommodations were made in advance and it took a good 30 mins to get us all checked in with bed types, but on different floors. Not the end of the world, but I think the front desk receptionist could have been a bit more understanding and offered apologies in lieu of excuses.

Overall, the property is very well maintained and the rooms were very nice. Watch out that you don't take the bottled water or it'll be $7 USD. There is a mini frig, but it's stuffed with mini bar products, not for your own use.

The pool area was kept very clean and organized. Plenty of staff ready to bring you food/ drinks. Sames goes for the beach area. Be sure to arrive no later than 7-8am if you want a beach Palapa. They are free to use, but you have to get up early to reserve one. It is very nice of them to have a coffee cart outside to serve you while waiting in line. It's really well worth it to have a Palapa while on the beach or you're going to get scorched. It's a very relaxing way to spend the day.

All the food in the hotel was good, but expensive as any property eatery would be. Note that a service gratuity is always added to your checks... even at the coffee shop when you get food on your own. Just something to be aware of.

Location wise it is great....pretty much centered among the beach area. The staff is friendly and accommodating. This was our first trip there and would return. But be aware... Aruba is an expensive place to visit.

Staff is exceptional, rooms clean, restaurants excellent. Great for families. The gym facility is smaller than the previous gym, with no showers, however there are plenty cardio machines and weights. The only drawback to this hotel is finding a hut for shade. The huts are assigned starting at 6:30 am. Be prepared to awaken well BEFORE 6am as the lines begins to form very early. Many of the huts are reserved, but are not used. The policy states if you reserve the hut and it is not "claimed" by 11:00am it is forfeited, however, they appear to be available of a "fee". You expect these to be part of the use of the facility at no extra cost. Therefore, It can be very frustrating when you are paying top dollar. Only poolside activity: BINGO. 1 game per day.

This hotel is perfect for a family with kids looking for an upscale hotel. It is big, clean, pretty, has nearly everything you could need/want. However, I can't recommend it for a couple or a honey/babymoon. This Hyatt is clearly trying to attract families with a huge slide and a kids program/baby sitting services. Instead of giving families a stinky eye, couples are much better off staying at an adults only hotel or at least one that it geared towards couples. I cannot believe couples who come here for a honeymoon and complain about the kids, they must not have done any research before choosing their hotel. Families, try to get an Ocean/Island room, because the sunsets are beautiful and worth being able to see from the room. The palapa system is a mess, considering what it costs to stay here palapas should be free all day everyday. Overall, I can definitely recommend this hotel for a family/kids vacation!
