“UNIQUELY WONDERFUL AND DIFFERENT”
Reviewed March 24, 2014

Over the past several years, we had been hearing some very nice things about this place. So we set out to find it on our own and failed - two years in a row! Having learned from that lesson and having reviewed the menu with great interest, this year (2014) we simply grabbed a taxi; told the driver where we wanted to go; and trusted in his ability to find the place. As it was, the place was in the opposite direction of where we had been looking and we were glad to be dropped at the door in just a few minutes. We like to try new places each year and especially look for some diversity of menu at the new places we frequent. GOSTOSO easily lived up to our objective of diversity. It has one of the most unique and satisfying menus we have seen in Aruba and we found ourselves experiencing difficulty in deciding what to get. So we threw ourselves upon the mercy and guidance of our waiter who deftly led us through the menu offerings and made some good recommendations along the way. Our only regret was that, this year (2014), we were unable to follow through with his recommendation that we eat here several times during our stay (we hope to remedy that next year). What we wound up with was one of the most uniquely delightful meals that we have had in a long time - from the plaintain/salmon sushi roll appetizer to the passion fruit and creole sea bass entrees. Everything was impeccably made and absolutely delicious. Service rose to the level of pampering and the advice given along the way was well worth considering. It was also pleasing to see the chef interacting with the patrons as well and showing that extra concern that is often missing in larger establishments. This is a chef that genuinely cares and you can see it in his demeanor and attitude - both of which are refreshing to see. We will be returning several times next year (in order to taste more of the offerings) and recommend the place to everyone - it may be a little hard to find but it is well worth the effort. In our opinion this place easily rivals Wacky Wahoo as one of, if not "the", the currently best seafood restaurants in Aruba and its menu goes beyond that as well. Service is excellent, setting and ambiance is nice. We found nothing to complain about here and suspect that will be the case for future visits. In our opinion, this place exceeds the standards that BAREFOOT is known for in Town. Go and Enjoy.

“Great family place”
Reviewed March 24, 2014

This is a small family owned restaurant. Our family of 8 with a toddler, a vegetarian, and one with many allergies received excellent service. The grouper was awesome. We sampled several of the desserts with the tres leche being the favorite.

“Very good Portuguese and Aruban fare in neighborhood restaurant”
Reviewed March 22, 2014

This was a return to an Aruba favorite.

The place: Neighborhood restaurant. Small house-like building, situated in residential area. Interior: wood paneled bar as you enter to the right, and then seating area to the left consisting of small wooden tables (two, four tops), one or two sets of tables pushed together for groups - in all, perhaps seating for 30 people inside. Lots of small pics, memorabilia, etc. hang on walls - adding to the small neighborhood restaurant feel. Small outside area w/ tables as well. Small staff (front, say 4 or 5), including owner . A warm and inviting feel as soon as you walk inside.

The People: owner/chef (Jose) is omnipresent and visibly takes great care and pride in his business. He did not read the full menu to us as with last visit in 2012; and seemed to generally rely on staff a bit more - which likely helps even out the service. Jose is warm, friendly - and his staff reflects his style - uniformly engaging, relaxed style. Great team.

The Food: Portuguese influenced and Aruban fare that is well prepared, well seasoned, and generally excellent.

App - We started with the Creole “Sushi Roll” - plantain, stuffed with Cream Cheese & Avocado, and with choice of seafood filling - which we enjoyed so much on our last visit. It was outstanding on this visit as well.

Entree - I had the Cabrito Stoba - an Aruban dish of goat in a stew, Cilantro, Garlic, Onions, Leek, in a beer and red wine sauce. Very good local dish.

Entree - Nicole had the "Espetada a la Marinera" - a kebab, that hangs suspended over the plate off metal hook (see pic). The kebab is Grouper wrapped in bacon. Below the hanging kebab, the plate holds sauteed seafood (shrimp, calamari, scallops, mussels in a white sauce with rice. Also, very good.

Drink - We greatly enjoy the white Sangria at Gostoso's. Packed with cut fresh fruit (apples, citrus, etc), and a bit of spice (believe cinnamon, nutmeg), it is delicious and addictive.

Pricing: US$130 for pitcher of white sangria, two cocktails, app, two mains, incl gratuity - an excellent value.

The Verdict: Warm, neighborhood restaurant feel. Very good and hearty food, very well priced. Missed a touch below our last experience there - so only four stars this time; but, a very good restaurant, well worth visiting. Would recommend and return again without hesitation.

“Second Visit,, Bit disappointing,, First Time we were Amazed..”
Reviewed March 22, 2014

WE arrived for our 7 pm, dinner, and were promptly seated, noticed the owner was not there yet. WE ordered appetizers, they were fine.. My husband had snapper,, which he enjoyed.. I had decided I wanted Tempura Shrimp, and a Cesar Salad.. Expecting great things.. Well,, The Tempura Shrimp much to my dismay,, were under=cooked, basically it was just a white color , and sagged with oil.. I ate two,but could eat no more.. My Cesar salad,, was such a disappointment,, Expecting, since most things there in our past have been such high quality,, It was just romaine lettuce,, a slight dusting of powdered cheese,, and an plentiful amount of cheap croutons. ,,, Last time our experience, where Jose waited on us, personally,, everything was tip top shape,, and our food was awesome, when everything passed his test., WE had been waiting two weeks to make the trek into town for our special dinner there,, and were disappointed this time.. We'll go back, but be more cautious with what we order.. and hopefully Jose will be there,, watching over the kitchen and our food/plates when they are delivered.. WE have sent several friends there to dine,, and most of them have had positive experiences.. WE'll give them another try next time we are in town.. Cause we know,, they are very capable of delivering an awesome meal..
