“Loved the Tam”
Reviewed February 18, 2008

Our family of 10 stayed at the Divi Tamarin from January 11th to January 18th. The rooms were good and you could not beat walking out on to the patio and the beach. The beach was beautiful. They had everything you needed--kayaks, floats, bikes, pools, etc. The restaurants were great for breakfast and lunch and we also had 2 buffet dinners and 5 sit down dinners. We were very happy with everything and hopefully we can go back some day. We also used the restaurants at the Divi property. Just took the golf shuttle over there. We feel the Divi Tamarin was a great deal for the money.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Tam Jan. 26th thru Feb. 2nd.
Overall, we had a great experience there. It was our first time in Aruba, but not our first time traveling in the Carribean to an all-inclusive.

You can't beat the hot sunny weather every day in Aruba! We booked through Beach Destinations.com and had no problems whatsoever. We arrived and our request for a specific bldg. # and 1st floor were granted. Check in took a matter of minutes. Room safe was $2 per day ; we were given a safe key, towel cards and room key and were off.
We had thought we wanted bldg. 23 based on looking at the hotel map, however when we actually got there we weren't thrilled with the view from that part of the resort. Looking off to the left was basically the end of the beach and a view of where the cruise ships came in, as well as a large crane and freighter boxes stacked up. Asthetically not very pleasing. The next day we asked to move to the complete opposite end of the resort to bldg. 1100 and were very happy. They took care of this request also in a matter of minutes. Rooms as already reviewed are small and basic but very clean. From this bldg., you could see over towards the Divi and a beautiful stretch of beach. It was also right next to the fitness center which we used every morning. For those interested, the fitness center was fairly well equipped with a great view of the beach and ocean while working out.

The staff onsite was very helpful, especially those who booked dinner reservations and tours, etc. There is also a Hertz rent a car right on site which we used. We rented a 2008 Wrangler jeep for 24 hours for $126 w/ taxes and we thought was well worth it. We were able to tour the island by ourselves at our own pace. We traveled over to the California Lighthouse then proceeded to drive the north shore which is amazing. They rugged terrain can be a challange but very fun (but hot so be prepared). We drove to the natural bridge that had collapsed, then back thru the center of the island over to Baby Beach to snorkel. Another great experience. Since we had the jeep to get around, we decided to try dinner off the resort and tried the Flying Fishbone which was recommended to us. This place is unbelievable. Tables right on the beach up to the water. Very expensive but great food.

Other than our day w/ the jeep, we pretty much stayed at the resort with the exception of a morning bus ride into downtown. It was easy and only $5 round trip for the both of us. And only about a 10 minute drive.
There are some very high-end shops in the Renaissance Hotel mall, and then your basic vendors outdoors.

At the resort, we took out the kayak, got a lesson on sailing the sunfish boat , and also went to the Day Spa at the Divi for a great massage. Between the Tam and Divi there is plenty to keep busy. There are many bars and much food whenever you want. You can walk between hotels which is a couple of minutes, or grab a shuttle which is always available no problem.

I'd like to note, the previous posting that said lots of kids and noise.....we did not experience any of that at all. As a matter of fact, I commented while there that there were hardly any kids and thought it was an older crowd. The most annoying thing we found (but would be anywhere on the island, not just the Tam) is the smoking which is prevalent everywhere. Hard to eat a meal as a non-smoker with people lighting up right next to you. Bad enough in the outdoor areas, but the indoor restaurants is worse. We also tried the Alhambra Casino which is the closest one, and had a hard time staying there due to the smoke. But hey, that's just us.

Speaking of restaurants, all of the reservation only ones were very good. We tried them all : Palm Grill, Red Parrot, Ginger, and Papprazzi and didn't have a bad meal at any of them. Also easy to get and change reservations. We requested a few changes on times/days and it was no problem. The buffet food was good and a large variety. Also note if you want a drink from any of the bars they don't open until 11:00 am, however if you need coffee, there is a machine open 24 hours!

We are beach people so didn't hang at the pool much but it was a nice pool area with comfortable lounges. The beach loungers were ok as well. You could get foam floats from the towel hut to lay on in the water, or we also put them on our chairs at the beach for extra padding! It is really too hot to just lay in the sun without water or shade, or else walking the beach, so be prepared.

We really liked the Tam/Divi. You can't beat being able to walk from your room right onto the beach and the ocean view is amazing, as well as the sunsets at night. It was a wonderful experience and would definitely go there again.

If you travel with children - go ahead - this place is for you!
But, if you want peace and quiet, if you want to have breakfast while listening to the sound of the sea and birds singing and want a luxury of reading a book or newspaper while eating, stay away from this hotel as far as possible!
Infants were crying, toddlers were misbehaving and teenagers were loud. It came to the point that we started to take our food to go :( In addition to that, they play loud music in the cafeteria even at breakfast time.
The room was good; we were on the second floor. The beach was really good, but... There is a "but": If you want a beach umbrella and believe me you need one b/c sun is really hot, you have to get up very early (7am is good) to put your book or your towel on the beach chairs under umbrellas. Then you can go back to sleep knowing that you have your place guaranteed. I counted - in front of our building (#23), which contained at least 10 rooms, we had 4 umbrellas.
Food was bad in the cafeteria. The asian place and italian one were good.
We stayed before in nearby "Manchebo", where the rooms were quite bad, but it was very peaceful and the beach was just wonderful. So, next year it is back to Manchebo for us.

We were at the Tam from Jan13-20, 2008. This was our 3rd visit to the Tam and 5th time in Aruba.

Flights
Skyservice out of Toronto - The plane was on time and almost empty on the way down. The return flight was delayed from 1pm to 11pm. We did have 2 days notice, so we were able to change our connector flight. Signature Vacations combined the Punta Cana and Aruba flights. Those arriving in Aruba lost their first day and were none too happy. Those of us leaving got an extra day of sunshine, so no complaints. Caution, do not rely on the Signature rep in Aruba for anything. She did not follow through on her promises.
Rooms
We were given a second floor room in building 19, exactly as I had requested. The rooms at the Tam are a bit on the small side, but spotless. There is a small bar fridge in the room, but it is unstocked. All rooms are directly on the beach. We were moved to a ground floor room in building 11 after I broke my ankle.
Medical Service
I stepped off a step just one hour after arrival and broke my ankle. No fault of the resort, just bad luck. The medical service was great. From ambulance ride, doctor consult, x-rays, another consult and cast, it took only 2 hours. The cost was a very reasonable $350 US. The hospital was very clean, seemed well equipped and the doctor was from Holland.
Hotel Managers
The managers were very accommodating. They sent a driver to pick us up at the hospital, we were then offered a 1st floor room, wheelchair, and crutches or walker. They do have 2 handicap rooms at the Tam, but they were both occupied by folks more severely mobility impaired than I was. They even thought to provide me with garbage bags and an elastic to cover the cast so that I could shower.
Beach
Well this trip all I could do was sit on the lounger and look at the water, but the beach is why we choose the Tam. I could hobble out of the room directly onto the amazing white sand. My husband would bring me buckets of ocean water to cool off with. We normally go to Aruba in October and evidently the water is slightly cooler in January.
Restaurants
The main buffet is average for an all-inclusive. The food is in an almost totally enclosed area and seating is outside under a roof. Good quality but not as great as it was in the past. Do not leave your food unattended on the table as the birds will immediately arrive for a quick snack. The a-la cartes (inside and air-conditioned) were top notch. You can choose from Italian, Oriental and Carribean(at the Divi). They also have a Palm Grill a la carte which is basically in a raised section of the buffet where food is cooked right on the table top. It was never a problem to get a reservation, but the hotel was not at full capacity. For those small or late night snacks there is a snack bar by the pool.
General Comments
This is a smaller and quieter resort than many we have been to and it is a little older in styling. That being said, it is our favorite place in the south and we will definitely go back.

views were absolutely fantastic. The rooms were basic and the first one we had smelt musty and damp but after pleading with the receptionist we were given another but did have to wait 3 hours for the guest to book out of it! The rooms did have a problem with lizards but they are harmless. The food was vey basic and very repetative. Most of the staff were helpful. It is worth paying for the use of the divi as this had better food and facilities and less drunken youngsters. The rooms are all sea fronted but ask for one near the main hotel/pool as these were better and less damp.

We were fortunate to have stayed at the Tamirijn during a week in which the place was not full. As such we were able to get accomations in the 2300 block which is one of the only truly "sandy" beach areas at the resort. however,on our last night when the crowds started to arrive ,some of them were really noisy and one had to wait on a long line for the buffet dinners etc.. There were some "chair hogs", people who left their beach towels unattended all day. The location of the room was in itself worth the cost of the vacation!!. The food is only so, so and the mixed drinks were poorly made. Top shelf liquor is available but you have to ask. The shuttle service was at times very poor, especially at noon when they are hustling to make money on everyone who is checking out. Avoid having to travel on them during this time. Otherwise they will take you right to your door if you ask! The staff was attentive and helpful. We liked the restaurant Ginger the best but, all of them had good service. The sun always seems to shine in Aruba .This was our third visit in 3 years and we will probably return.

This resort was Just Great, from the staff on the grounds to the staff at the Red Parrot. We enjoyed the facility and the beach was fabulous. We toured the island on a Jeep Tour to the Natural Pool and this was perfect. Iris the concierge at the Tamarijn booked our outings and she was a wonderful help to us. We plan to go back many more times.
The dissappointing part of our trip was the flight arrangements made by SIGNATURE VACATIONS, they truly suck ! Don't book with them. Flight delays, direct flights changed to connecting stop overs, and poor information and communication form the Signature staff. They left us in the dark. The weather was very good but it did rain for about 5 minutes every day, Not bad. There is always a breeze on this island so leave your comb at home..
Bring lots of sun screen and several bathing suits, you will live on the beach.

Have fun.
