Just got back from 5 nights at the Marina hotel. Would definitely return. Not to big, Not to small. Perfect size. Updated. Their private island is WONDEFUL except for the mosquitos. They are incredible. They need to allow the trade winds to sweep them out by unblocking the air flow with trees and fences. Bring OFF with 25% deet. The beach service is slow at both the island and the Ocean hotel. Some of the staff were excellent some were OK. Cesar the bellman was excellent. Very helpful. Asked every time he saw us how we were doing. Great location in the city. The city is building a trolley that will travel throughout the town which will be great when it's finished. One of the top trips we've taken. I gave it a 4 but it is really a 4 and a half (mosquitos).

Room Tip: Get a front view of the harbor.

This hotel is overdue for a complete refurbish job. I did not find any Bed Bugs as mentioned by others reviewers on my room, however the mattress was horrible and really old. The bathroom was clean, but the bathtub was stained with rust. The A/C was adequate. The Aquarium restaurant on site offers buffet breakfast/Lunch/Dinner. The food is OK not great, but there were flies around the buffet. There is a Starbucks on the first level of the hotel which is very convenient; if your breakfast is not included (mine was not). The staff is very helpful and friendly. There is a boat shuttle to a private island (free); it is a short 10-15 min ride to a private beach and some relaxation with the airport noise on the background. The hotel is right across the Cruise port, and next to a high end shopping center it is not located on the main “Tourist” "High Rise area. Lousy internet (Free at the lobby only), try to use the Starbucks for free.

A great location, right in the middle of town with lots of things to do, shops, restaurants and much more. As for the hotel the main building has many rooms under repairs/remodeling. The beach front building is more for families and the main building is more for singles and couples. Services is average, while I found a few good staff. The two buildings are in badly need to repairs/remodeling. Rooms size are good, but again new furniture would be good.

Room Tip: If you are a couple or single, the main building is much better, for a family the beach front is bet...

After reviewing weekly on different reviews about hotel I was scared, I saw everything from bed bugs, no maid service to unfriendly workers. Well ALL OF WHICH WAS NOT TRUE!! Everyone who worked there was very helpful and pleasant. My son and I were celebrating our birthdays and we had a great time. It wasn't crowded, plenty of lounge chairs by the pool and beach. The private island was beautiful. Do expect to see a lot of iguanas. Mainly couples and friends. But kid friendly.the rooms were a good size, nice view of marina and ocean. Had all inclusive food was good steakhouse was great and Juana in Atlantis was soooo nice "miss you". In conversion she found out it was my birthday and she had chef make me a cake and everyone sung happy birthday, how nice was that ! Very clean, everywhere, everyone spoke in passing. Would definitely return. Oh Fatima at the pool bar the best! Miss you !! So friendly, thanks for the signature drink lol hope to see you all soon. Our first time there weather is the best, will be back soon thank you!

My fiance and I stayed at the Ocean Suites. We had a great room with kitchenette , living room, balcony and more! We really liked our room and the view of the beach. The pool on the ocean suites side is great with a swim up bar. The water is a good level if you plan to come with kids. The infinity pool on the marina side is more for adults no swim bar there but there is a bar next door and waiters come and take orders for drinks and food. Now to the best part the private beach! I love the fact that it is secluded and exclusive to Renaissance guests only, you need your room key to board the boat which will take you to the island. There they have two sides. One called iguana beach which has many iguanas walking around and the other called flamingo beach which of course has flamingos walking around freely. The iguana side is more for families it has a restaurant on that end and the water is nice and shallow . Beautiful clear blue water and friendly fish swimming next to you.The flamingo side is more for adults and you have the option of going topless if you would like a tan without tan lines. The flamingo side is very quiet and serine since there are no children in the area. There is also a spa on that side which seemed like a thing to try! (next time) The area of the resort is perfect it's like they have their own town with a movie theater, several restaurants , shopping centers and more. Our favorite restaurant was the steakhouse, excellent service and amazing food! I like to wonder off so we walked in to town which I must admit was a bit scary in the night time but thankfully nothing bad happened. It was a pleasant walk. We tried a tapas place very reasonable pricing and a Cuban place I forget the name. The staff there was very friendly and there was live music. Gave it a romantic feel. We checked out the little shops where the boats dock thinking it would be somewhat cheap but instead ended up having worse prices than the actual stores. I say check it out at your own risk. We went on one excursion which the hotel booked for us. We went horseback riding through gold mines, on the beach and to an ostrich farm. What an experience! The ostrich farm was pretty cool and we even got to feed them. Our tour guides were very informative and I actually learned a thing or two from them. Overall our vacation was the best! I love this place so much I would like to plan my destination wedding there next year!

We stayed for 10 days at the Renaissance Resort & Casino. After reading some of the reviews we were skeptical as whether to change our hotel before we left, but were so glad we did not. We stayed in the Ocean Suites overlooking the pool with a balcony and ocean view. The room was spacious with a living room, galley kitchen and bedroom with king size bed. The self set A/C kept the whole place at a nice temperature. It was in the 90's and humid the whole time we were there but hardly noticed while inside or sleeping.
All of the hotel personnel are very helpful, especially Linda the Navigator. If she did not know the answer to a question she quickly found out and left a message on the room answering machine. Some people had mentioned that people were in the lobby using the WIFI but we checked out a few other hotels and it was the same here. As for the hot lobby, you are in a tropical place and the doors are left open to provide a tropical atmosphere. The private Island was an added surprise, oh those Flamingo's you could get right up to them. Enjoyed the pool and the swim up bar when we took a dip to cool off at night. We ate at several of the restaurants in the pavilion next door and visited the Casino to make a contribution several times:-) We will stay at the Renaissance again! Glad we did not listen to the negative reviews...

Room Tip: We were in room 4213 overlooking the pool never heard any noise from anywhere.

Overall we were more than satisfied with our room, but we aren't the type to be super picky about the accommodations because we don't spend very much time in the room. I thought the hotel was nice but drinks and food offered left a little to be desired. I would stay here again primarily because of the private island. This hotel is located in downtown whereas most other hotels are located on the North part of the island called the high rise area. Its a $2.30 bus ride, 10-15 minutes or $15 cab ride to get to that side. There is more shopping and night life over there but we didn't find that we missed being on that side. Cabs are expensive - ride is never longer than 15 minutes and its never less than $10 to go anywhere it seemed. It was $20 from airport and took less than 10 minutes. There are good restaurants in both areas.

There is a boat that pulls into the hotel lobby and its about a ten minute ride to a private island. The island has two sides, family and adults only. The family side has the bar oddly enough. The adults only side of the island has flamingos that make for great pics. You can feed them and literally stand just inches from them. The island is not too crowded, there is bar service so you don't have to get up from your chair, and you can tan topless on the adults only side too! Prices are same in hotel and on the island. We brought lunch with us a couple times, and drinks too but you technically aren't supposed to. Just be discrete.

Food- The food at the hotel is a little expensive. $12 for turkey club and fries and it only has one piece of turkey on it! Burgers didn't taste great. The wings looked really good although I never tried them. Pretty good deal wings and fries for $11 or so. We never had dinner at one of the restaurants at the hotel because there are so many good options outside the hotel. Alot of restaurants are owned by Dutch people and the food is pretty darn good. Prices at most of the restaurants we looked at were between $20-$35 for an entree. $8-12 apps. The fish is good, ask what is the fresh catch of the day and go with that. You can't go wrong that way.

Drinks - Drinks were not very strong and were inconsistently made. From one bar tender to the next the strength and thickness of our banana daiquiris differed greatly. There is HH from 430-6 when drinks are 2 for 1. Otherwise, I suggest going to convenience store and buying your own drinks. We did this and just hung out by the pool with no problem. Drink prices ranged from $7-9 each for cocktails and about $6-$7 for a Balashi (local beer that was tasty). You can get a six pack of Balashi for about $10-12 in convenience store.

Service - Hotel front desk is difficult IMO. They would not let us use the phone to confirm a tour we had later in the day. That was annoying. They said we have no outside line- what do you do in emergencies? We call out-then you have an outside line...is sorta how the conversation went.

Restaurants we tried and loved - Bingo and Yemanja. Would not go to the Old Fisherman again.

Room Tip: We stayed on the first floor which was super convenient. It was a bit noisy at night but we didn'...
