“Must stay for the Private Island”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

My wife and I stayed at the Renaissance Marina Hotel for the week of Christmas. Here are my two cents:

PRIVATE ISLAND: The sole reason for booking this hotel. They have their own private island which is truly paradise. Not at all crowded like Palm beach and you have a better chance of finding a chair or shade. There is a side for adults only, so it's nice and quiet. And a side for children. The restaurant on the island is very good and very decent prices for a hotel. One thing is that they know how to cook their meat Aruba. I had their special burger with fries for $11, nice big portion. Bring your snorkeling gear if you have one, lots of fishes and wildlife around including some friendly flamingos. We decided to visit Eagle Beach one day to see the famous Divi trees. After an hour or so we went back to the private island. The private island made it for us.

ROOMS: Being a platinum member, I was upgraded to an ocean view room. Very spacious and clean. Beware of the island or king views, you will be staring mostly at a parking lot. One complaint I have regarding the room is that the bathroom needed some dire attention. The bathtub had yellow stains showing age and the lighting in there is not as good. The paint also needs a touch up. Other than that, nothing much.

FOOD: We didn't really eat at the hotel, except for the Blue bar at the pool a couple of times. I've heard from others guests that the restaurants have good food and service. Specially the steak and chop house. We decided to go to restaurants around the area, there are many within walking distance, specially at the Renaissance Market Place and at a cheaper price than the hotel. Some that I recommend are CiLO and Cuba's Cooking, and for a bit more money you have to try Driftwood Seafood and YeManja Wood Fire Grill. These two were the best. If you are a platinum or gold member, they do not offer breakfast vouchers for the breakfast buffet, which is a BIG let down. They do offer a discount price of $15/person instead of $21/person. We are not big eaters when it comes to breakfast so we had Starbucks which is located in the 1st floor of the hotel. There is also other places around that serve breakfast for $9 for pancakes, eggs, fruit, and meat. Half the price what they charge at the hotel. The hotel also offer an All-Inclusive package if that's your thing.

FACILITIES: In the Marina hotel, there is an adult only pool. It's small but very relaxing and with the BLue Bar nearby, you can order food by the pool. We enjoyed it. For the kids, they have another Renaissance down the street for families called the Ocean Suites. They have a bigger pool there. The lobby is very nice and welcoming. There is actually a mall on the first floor of this resort where the starbucks is located. Lots of luxury brand stores here. There is also a Casion on sight and a movie theater down the street at the Market Place.

All in all, we had a great time and wished we could stay longer. Once again, the private island made this trip for us.

TIP: Regarding the Aruban airport for those of you who are US residents and going to Aruba for the first time. On the way back to the US, make sure you give yourself extra time to catch your flight. You will have to go through US customs before entering the plane instead of when you touchdown in the US. The section of the airport where all the US flights fly from is considered US territory, so you will have to face possibly long lines for passport and luggage check.

We stayed at the Ocean Suites part of Renaissance and we had an ocean view one bedroom plus kitchenette. I loved the location of this hotel. It's close enough to all the downtown shopping, great restaurants at Marketplace (esp. Dutch Pancake House and Cafe de Plaza), private island beach (free of charge). We were shocked how expensive the umbrella and chair rentals were at Eagle Beach and Palm Beach (30$ + per couple). We thought it was a waste of our time just to go there, because its so crowded! So we chose to stay at the private island instead
Would definitely recommend and will return in the future

Room Tip: Pool area is open till 11pm at Ocean Suites. Ask for a higher floor if you don't like the noise.

We have stayed at this hotel multiple times and it gets better and better each time! The private island is amazing as it is peaceful and tranquil! The staff all around was pleasant and friendly and I would say the only down side is waiting for food/drink while on the island. There are times that it takes a while to order/get your items however you are in Aruba and time is of no essence! Happy hour in the hotel lobby bar offers 2 for 1 from 3:30pm-6pm which is nice after the beach and before dinner! Rafael is a great bartender who is always ensuring that your cup is never empty! He is very attentive and gives great recommendations on dinner (both touristy areas as well as local places). The only down side of the bar is that the TV’s are behind you so if you are wanting to watch anything, you have to turn around and have your back to the bar. But all in all, I would highly recommend this hotel and all the amenities that they offer!

Room Tip: The Ocean Front rooms are nice as they provide a good view however the Island View's are just as...

We had to stay here the unexpected last night of our Aruba trip a few weeks ago. United had put us up here due to them cancelling our flight. After hours of hell and being treated horribly by United Employees we were shuttled to the Renaissance to check in along with 205 other passengers. The Renaissance was extremely accommodating and got us checked in timely amongst all the commotion. While we were in line waiting to check in there were two hotel employees standing there to help with any questions or concerns. They were very professional & courteous. They had asked where we had stayed on our trip and when we answered the Marriott Stellaris they proceeded to tell us of their lobby renovations and their planned room renovations. They even made sure that my boyfriend & I were checked in with a King size bed on the adult/couples only side.
The hotel is in the marina & the suites are located across the street closer to the beach. The families were taken over to the suites and the couples were checked in at the marina. I actually loved this hotel. I know it was only for a night but the room was very nice & the hotel was happening. I don't think that the hotel is appreciated for what it is. The rooms where very nice & the lobby and elevator areas were also very nice. The hotel actually reminded me of South Beach Miami. Which is one of my favorite places in all the world. It was very artsy with a younger crowd. The bar by the pool had videos showing on the side of the hotel & the pool area was still busy at 11PM. We checked in to our room & it was very clean & accommodating. Very "South Beach" the bathroom door was frosted glass and the products in the bathroom were Aveda. These attention to details are important. Especially when you are competing with major resorts like the Marriott or the Hyatt. But this hotel is really for a younger, hipper crowd.
We ate in the hotel at LG Smiths Steak & Chop. It was very good. It was actually the first time in our whole trip that I had a great glass of wine. Dinner was awesome & was a nice relaxation after the horrible day we had.
After that we went to the pool around 11 or so & listened to music, lounged out on the lounge chairs, & swam in the pool. It was completely different then our previous hotel but was very nice in a good way. We had a great night sleep after a nice shower. The next morning we had a nice breakfast at the poolside outdoor buffet across the street before heading back to our continuation of our horrid day before at the Aruba airport.
All in all a great stay in a great hotel...a definite Diamond in the rough! :)

Room Tip: The rooms in the marina hotel are very nice if you can stay there. If they are renovating the rooms...

Just got back from staying here here with my parents and Fiancé at the Ocean Suites for a week. I am not sure why this hotel got mixed reviews -- we had an amazing time! The rooms were clean, quiet, and big! The staff at the Renaissance was helpful with restaurant recommendations and things to do, although, you wont want to leave the hotel with its private island. The private island makes this hotel so unique and worth every penny. They have boats that leave every 20 minutes to pick you up from both hotels. The weekends are very busy and the boats run every 5-10 minutes. The hotel has mastered the art of efficiently shuttling its guests to and from the island! In my opinion, the Hyatt and Marriott may be newer, but they all share the same crowded beach, and the Renaissance has its own private beach which makes it very relaxing and quiet. There are two sides on the private island, one for adults only and one for kids. There is one restaurant on the private beach, which has a great lunch menu and free wifi! The beach is near the airport, but we enjoyed watching the airplanes land and take off. The bathrooms are a little dated , but they are renovating the rooms. I would stay here again!

Room Tip: Floors 4-5 have great views of the ocean. Make sure you ask for an ocean view!

We spent our last 2 nights in Aruba at the Renaissance. We stayed on the adult side with our room facing the adult infinity pool. The hotel was doing renovations in the Lobby/Bar area so the only downside was the loud construction workers on Saturday and Sunday mornings.. Aside from that, the hotel stay was wonderful. The staff was great. The casino was fun.

Now, let's get to the "Private Island Oasis"... One word- AMAZING!!! The boat ride to the island was always fun. I LOVE how the boat pulls up in the lobby of the hotel to pick up guests. The island was never crowded. There were always beach chairs available. We enjoyed the iguanas on the family friendly side of the island and the flamingos on the adult side of the island. Both my fiance and I felt like we were on our own little island. WE were able to secure a hammock at the end of the family friendly side. This was perfect for sun-bathing, sleeping, and the water was so shallow that we could step from the hammock into the ocean without any issues. Some people even had their beach chairs sitting in the ocean. The only downside to the private island were the lack of choices for food. The restaurant was good but it lacked a lot of choices.

When I go on vacation, I dont pay too much attention to the "smallness of the bathroom" or the little rust in the shower. The rooms were nice but if you are on vacation to stay ing your super comfortable room all day then this isn't the hotel for you. Our room was perfect for sleeping, showering, and changing!

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the renovations. If you stay over the pool/bar, you will hear loud music fr...
