“Beautiful views ... shame about the food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2014

Yes I can see why its classed as 4 star...lovely views, nice spa, golf course, lovely reception area, big rooms (a little on the tired side maybe)....but the food in the evening was pretty disappointing.

Room... large room, lovely view, sofa bed, wardrobe, huge bed, deep bath, little balcony over the golf course, but dont ask for one of these rooms if you plan a sleep in as a little chap scoots around the course on this mower type thing at 6am making the grass look pretty. Toilettries and large bath towel. Tea/coffee, biscuit, there is a fridge you can use (not filled), hairdryer and safety deposit box.

I had an evening meal, meant to be chicken with lemon and garlic, well not quite sure how they came about that description as it was just chicken. It came with chips and a tomato....no veg no salad, you had to pay extra for that. So I was a little disappointed with that.

Breakfast...nicely cooked although it took an age to get a cup of tea, service was lacking, not what you would expect in a 4 star hotel to be honest.

On the whole nice stay, lovely views.

Room Tip: If you want to sleep in beware of the green keepers early start

We stayed here on a Friday night and also ate in the restaurant. The room was compact but well presented - we were on the ground floor and looked out onto some shrubbery but as we only stayed one night this did not matter. The bathroom had quite a small bath and a tv built into the wall but we were disappointed to find there was no remote control supplied to use it.

The spa facilities were excellent - a good sized pool, two jacuzzis, steam room and sauna. We also had access to the gym and there were also various treatments available but we had not booked these. The changing rooms were very small - luckily it was quite quiet on the Saturday morning when we used them.

We had a three course meal in the restaurant (included in the package we had booked but very reasonably priced anyway) and were very impressed with the food, service and ambience - there were views over the golf course and on to the surrounding towns. We also ate here the following morning for breakfast - this included a full English breakfast (self service) as well as fruit, cereals, pastries and various juices - it was very good quality.

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday for a Sunday spa slumber package. On arrival we hit the spa, was modern, clean and had good facilities and the staff were very helpful. We checked in our room at 2pm this had a beautiful view and pleasant enough inside. Food wise was a disaster!!! Staff were friendly no complaints there but this is suppose to be a four star hotel?? which didn't reflect it's food standard! To start we were offered some bread in a basket which was hard and cold! Following on we had Salmon which was poorly presented and soaked in cream cheese, not pleasant! For main My boyfriend has 'sirloin' stake which was cheap and tough! And was accompanied by a tinned tomato!!!? Who does that! And what tasted like value chips!!! I had Beetroot risotto and had one mouthful and complained to the waitress, she was very helpful and took my main meal off the bill and we had 'complimentary' cheese and crackers - but this was slopped on a plate with Jacobs crackers grapes touching the chutney and not very fresh. Luckily I had a glass of wine or two!!. Breakfast was also very holiday inn like. My advice would be to get a new chef and look at the quality of restaurant in the vale hotel this is a good 4* star to compare to and your food doesn't come close. You may be looking for high profit margins but it's letting your hotel and the whole experience down! You can still keep a small menu and pub type food but be more imaginative, present it well combined with quality and you'll do a lot better!

We recently stayed here to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

We got married here a few years ago and were really looking forward to staying again. The staff were helpful and friendly and the spa was very enjoyable.

However the room standard has fallen and does not feel as good as it once was.

Overall it was enjoyable but rooms, particularly the bathrooms need a make over

Thank you for your review. It was surprising to hear that one of my most senior team members has come across in this manor and can only apologise for the confusion with regard payment of your stay although simple checkout procedures where being followed. On a lighter note I'm glad that the room was to your satisfaction.

Love the place! The food, service, rooms all stunning. Now for the bit that hurts. The spa showers need an overhaul. They are "grimy" and need attention. The public area loos also need to be checked regularly as been a few times now and had to point out cleanliness issues to staff. Glass doors on entering covered in finger marks. Its these little things that make a great establishment into an excellent one if they were addressed.

Used this place to crash out on a business trip, hence a fleeting stay. The staff are friendly and laid back, although attentive. Exactly what I wanted! Decent enough food – not mind blowing, but decent (Caesar Salad). The room – very bog standard, with a pretty poor bed. The bathroom had blackened tile grouting and sealant, and the shower was over the bath with a flappy curtain. Powerful though! I can see this place slowly going down hill, but at the moment its just about ok. As always, the web prices are daft – I phoned and got a much cheaper price midweek. I’d stay again, if only for the view across the golf course.
