I want to keep this place a secret. But I am going to give you the truth. This is a well run beautiful place to stay.Eustace and Annie work hard at making your stay a pleasant one. This is a true island experience. It has the view, the flowers, the breeze it is a gorgeous place to stay. We,my wife and I have traveled the world of exotic places. This is truly one of our favorites. It is not the Hyatt in Maui,we stayed there. But it is more than you would expect. You get a lot of bang for the buck.Doreen who will help you with breakfast in the morning is another sweety on the premises.Eustace cares much about his inn and we are the recipients of his care. You could sit at the view of the harbour all day and not be bored. In my opinion if there is a negative thing wriitten about this place, the person who wrote it has issues in life.It has views that are equivalant to any viewed in hawaii. We had a ball with the Brits who stayed there while we visited. We stayed 19 days.My daughter 18 was with us and loved it.We miss our Brits,Stanley,Dougy,MIke,Natalie and Judi. But I think they will miss me more. What a pleasant place to be.

The Ocean's Inn has a breath taking view overlooking English Harbor. The cottage was roomy with air conditioning and cable t.v. The pool was delightful with a newly extended deck overlooking the Harbor. Service was fantastic. Complimentary breakfast was very good with cereal, assorted breads for toast, fruit, hard boiled eggs, coffee and assorted juices. It was so lovely that it was hard to drag ourselves away from the hotel and do the tourist things. We had stayed at several hotels in the area before and Ocean's Inn is by far the best!

We just returned from a 10 day stay at Ocean Inn. Eustace and Annie were cheerful, helpful, friendly and engaging during the whole stay. We booked a cottage for the stay. After our first night they moved us to another cottage to provide more room.

The people we met at the hotel had a wide variety of interests (including scientific sampling, historical research, yacht services, and plain old vacationing). They also came from a variety of places (Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, the US, and more). Everyone was quite satisfied with the accommodations and the service.

The hotel is fairly small (17 beds). The rooms are modest, but comfortable. The grounds and the views are excellent! This property has one of the best views of the harbor in the area. The grounds are tended continuously and have a nice variety of flowering plants, shrubs, and fruit trees.

While we were there the deck surrounding the pool was tripled in size. We were amazed it was done in just two days, with minimal disruption. The result really added to the property.

  • Liked — Friendliness and helpfulness of the staff
  • Disliked — The hillside location (lots of climbing)

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2007

Myself and my husband spent a week at the Ocean Inn in mid-December 2007 to warm up and avoid the Christmas craziness in the UK. We had a totally relaxed and enjoyable week. We stayed in one of the four cottages on the small complex. The cottage could probably also be described as a villa, wooden shack or room. I would probably also describe it as basic - most of the single room was taken up by the bed but there was also a small wardrobe, bedside tables, a dressing table and a small fridge, as well as a compact ensuite bathroom. The decoration in the cottage was somewhat dated, and the air-con quite noisy, but it was perfectly comfortable, with everything you could need, and we became quite attached to it.

What really sells this hotel is the location. Our cottage had double doors opening out onto a small terrace with outstanding views of English Harbour, we sat reading there a lot just watching the boats and saw loads of lizards and humming birds in the surrounding garden. The same wonderful vista could be seen whilst eating breakfast, which was a help yourself buffet of toast, fruit, yoghurt, juices, cereal and eggs. We filled up on that each morning gazing out across the Dockyard before heading down to the harbour. It is only about 10 minutes walk at most downhill to the Harbour Road where all the restaurants, marina and Nelson's Dockyard are situated; these are mainly located along a single road, with the dockyard at the far end, so in season it would be close to all the action - though was very quiet while we were there. Admittedly it is a walk up a steepish hill back to Ocean Inn but after a few local Wadadli beers it was fine.

The management were friendly and helpful - we asked where to get a taxi to go up to the Sunday Night party at Shirley Heights (about 10 minutes drive away and great fun) and Eustace got on the radio and had one there in 2 minutes. There is a lounge area in the main house, which we didn't use (why would you sit inside in Antigua?), and it appeared to have a number of mosquitos flying around in it - there were quite a few of these around so spray is recommended. The outside 'honesty' bar was a nice idea; you help yourself to drinks and just record what you've had and it's added to your bill at the end of your stay. Though possibly because we were there at the very start of the season, we never saw anyone using it and when we had a drink there one night the bottles of tonic were past their best before date, but they had quite a choice of drinks and with a few people it would be quite sociable. The little pool was also always empty, though we spent a couple of mornings there lounging around on the sunbeds.

English Harbour itself had enough restaurants to eat somewhere different for lunch and dinner everyday for a week, and a peaceful gently shelving beach (Pigeon Beach) is a pleasant 20 minute walk from Ocean Inn. We also did some diving with Seawolf Divers based just up the road, which was excellent and again demonstrates the excellent location of Ocean Inn. There is a bus stop on the Harbour Road where you can catch a bus to the capital St. Johns, but we didn't actually make it there as there was enough in English Harbour to entertain us.

We were really pleased to have chosen Ocean Inn, and although not luxurious, the cottages are really private, picturesque and well positioned, as is the whole complex. There didn't seem to be many hotels in the main English Harbour area and for the location and price I think Ocean Inn would be hard to beat.

The Ocean Inn is a small intimate property with 10 units - 4 of them cottages, 6 in the main building or great house - located on the hillside overlooking English Harbour & Nelson's Dockyard - what a view! My husband & I have 70 years combined in the hotel/hospitality field, experienced many of the islands, 2 four-cabin catamaran cruises, 5* properties, etc. But, The Ocean Inn is a very unique property. Eustace Potter is the proprietor, his right-hand lady is Annie, his staff is excellent & then there is MIKE! (Mike is a little white dog that follows his master but will give you some time if you continually pet him). We were there for a week - Nov.3-10/07 - and met the greatest people from around the world - Australia, Belgium, England, US & ourselves from Canada. This is not the "Ritz" but beats anything in ambiance & hospitality. You are only a 15 - 20 walk to the beach or to the Dockyard, many restaurants in the area, rent a car, boat or scooter to explore or just enjoy the wonderful pool and verandah plus the congenial guests. There is an honour bar, enjoyable cold breakfast with great coffee & if you really need to, you can do a dinner meal in the kitchen. Our thanks to Eustace, Annie and staff, plus the great guests that made this a very memorable week on a beautiful island. Will add pictures when we get them.

We were at Ocean Inn for only 4 nights having stayed at Runaaway Bay for 4 nights before travelling to St Kitts for 6 nights and finished our holiday at Ocean Inn. On our first stay on the Island we visited Shirley Heights and the view of English Harbour struck me as the best landscape view I had seen anywhere. I didn't realise at that time that when we were to return to the island the week after to go to Ocean Inn (which we had booked only 3 weeks or so previously) we would have an equivalent view over the harbour.

We had originally booked a cottage in the gardens but on arrival we were offered a larger room in the main building. Annie showed us both rooms and we would have been happy with either but we opted for the room in the house as it meant that we did not have to carry cases down the fairly narrow path.

The gardens are not large but are lush and well maintained. There is a pool which we did not use as we prefer the sea but again it was well maintained and cleaned every day.

The breakfast was more than adequate and some fellow guests were allowed the use of the kitchen to prepare their evening meals. I don't know if this would be available to all guests but it certainly shows how accomodating Eustace, the owner, is.

Courtesy of British Airways, who cancelled our return flight from Gatwick to Manchester, we had to make alternative travel arrangements for the final leg of our journey and Eustace had no problem in letting us use the internet to make the arrangements. On a cautionary note, don't use your credit card to 'phone home. We had to telephone BA about our cancelled flight as it was not possible to cancel the alternative flight that they had put us on via the internet. We had to make 2 calls as the first was cut off prior to finishing, as was the second although I had given sufficient information prior to being cut off. The charge on my credit card on return was £50.00 !!!! I don't know who gets the bulk of that but I will not be doing it again.

To sum up, If I was to stay at English Harbour again I would be more than pleased to stay at Ocean Inn. There are a number of local restaurants all serving good food although probably the best and busiest is Trappas.

We have not long returned from a 2-week stay in this lovely hotel. The view over English harbour and Nelson’s Dockyard is probably one of the best on the island. The garden is stunning – filled with beautiful flowers and lots of wildlife. We even saw a hummingbird a few times.

The welcome we got was exceedingly friendly. Both Eustace and Annie were very helpful, as were the other staff.

The room was clean with enough space for all our stuff and sheets and towels were changed regularly. The bed was comfortable and the air-conditioning worked well.

The breakfast was simple but adequate – you don’t need a cooked full-English in this climate! Location was brilliant, as it was a very short walk down the hill to a number of good restaurants and bars.

We were within easy walking distance of Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour and even the lovely Pigeon beach. Nevertheless we hired a car for the 2 weeks so we could venture over the whole island. We decided that the Ocean Inn was the best place we could have been and well situated for getting about.

Would thoroughly recommend this place to anyone who likes to travel independently, is not looking for luxury, but enjoys beautiful places.
