See and feel the history in this lovingly restored place. See amazing boats and feel the buzz during the sailing season

Antigua was a stop on our caribbean cruise, we did the P&O excursion to Nelson's Dockyard. We had about an hour here and it wasn't long enough. This yard was built in Nelson's time and is still used today. There were many yachts in the harbour when we visited, quite shocking to see the number flying the red ensign - there seems to be a lot of money in the UK after all! the pub is great and although we didn't have time to visit the museum it looked very interesting. If you have the chance - go.

Amazing place, a must see. The view is spectacular, we used a private taxi service ( red rosé ) he is a local of the island. It was a 4 hr tour which was private and Red Rose will stop along the way for pictures. If you love boats there are all kinds to see in and around the bay. If you want a sense of the history of the island then you must visit.

We visited Antigua on a recent cruise and whilst others did the ship's excursion, we made our own way there and had a great day. You can take the Number 17 bus from the West Bus station opposite the Public Market. It cost $2 each way. Nelson's Dockyard is the last stop so it's very easy to find and it's so much more interesting doing it the way the locals do.

The dockyard is beautifully preserved and there were numerous amazing yachts from the US and Europe there on the day we visited. We enjoyed our walk out to the old fort and we saw hummingbirds, and lots of butterflies and goats on the way. The track is rough in places but very manageable. The museum is small but provides lots of useful information about the history of the dockyard and the museum building itself is lovely. We enjoyed our snack and drink in the Image Locker cafe, a haven for yachties and the former pay office at the dockyard. We spent a few hours around the Dockyard as this was our first port after our transatlantic crossing and because it was such a lovely calm. relaxing and interesting haven, Highly recommended.

You can spend a couple of leisurely hours wandering around Nelson's Dockyard; there are some interesting exhibits to view.

I expected to see a little more 'action' as it is advertised as a working dock yard and I imagine children would get bored fairly quickly.
