“Part of the Nelson's Dockyard Historic Area”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2012

Has the ruins of a fort used by the British to guard the island. Good views of the English harbour. The fees for a visit to Dow 's hill / Shirley Heights (they are a short drive away from the Nelson's Dockyard) are covered with the entry fee to the Nelson's Dockyard, so it would be advisable to do them them together.

“The Interpretation Centre and the view, both worth the trip”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 8, 2012

I too think that the I.C. is worth the 15 minutes for the commentated short history of the island. Totally NOT like a school presentation. Within a few short minutes it tries to give a balanced view of the history - and some is not very pleasant (i.e. slavery). To their credit the presentation does not dwell on the unpleasant - how easy it would have been to do that! The view from Shirely Heights down to English Harbour and Nelson Dockyards is breathtaking. The grounds are well kept and it's a pleasure to walk around.

“Great way to learn about the Antiguan history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 8, 2011

The Dow's Hill Interpretation Centre offers a really beautiful view down to English Harbour, Falmouth Harbour, the Nelson's Dockyard open-air museum, to the neighbour islands Guadeloupe, Montserrat and St. Kitts and Nevis.
In my opinion history is most of the time totally boring. In the small cinema (The Interpretation Center) you can re-experience the Antiguan history in 15-20 minutes with music, lights, a small sugar mill, different voices, the sun,.... It's a great way to learn about the history with fun.

“For some history, visit the Dockyard and Interpretation Centre”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2010

Antigua is small and so will be your investment in visiting Nelson's Dockyard and the Interpretation Centre to learn about the history of Antigua.

The Dockyard itself contains very few buildings of deep historical interest. There are many more interesting restored British naval outposts to explore in North America. The museum on the grounds, although small, does have some interesting displays and information. Your total time investment here will be around 30 minutes.

Of more interest is the Dow's Hill Interpretation Centre found on the way to Shirley Heights. One fee gets you into the Centre and the Dockyard. The Centre has an interesting 30 minute video on the history of Antigua. After viewing, you will have a much better understanding of the Antiguan people and the island they call home.
