“Perfect place to stay in Antigua.”
Reviewed December 26, 2011

A fantastic place to stay to explore Antigua. Both Gabriela and Douglas are very helpful and knowledgable. They go out of their way to make their guests stay as enjoyable as possible. Gabriela arranged the car hire for us and it was seamless and very easy. Driving is straight forward on the island (equipped with Douglas's tips!) and a car is recommended to make the most of the beaches and sights on the island. Antiguans will go out of their way to help even if you are not lost.
We stayed in a one bedroom cottage for one week and a studio for the second and both were very well equipped and included lots of little extras to help make day trips to the beach even more enjoyable. Both cottages had plenty of space and were equally comfortable.
The location is very peaceful overlooking the lagoon and it was lovely to sit on the veranda watching the wildlife. We found some lovely beaches nearby some of which were within walking distance.
This was the first time we have chosen a self catering option in the Caribean and we are really glad we did it. It is a great way to get a more authentic feel of the place and it was lovely to shop for fresh fruit and vegetables in the local market. As mentioned by many other guests the supermarket Gabriela takes you to has everything you could possibly need.
We tried several of the restaurants and enjoyed them all. There is plenty of choice and Douglas and Gabriella's local knowledge will help you find what you are looking for.
So if you are thinking of a holiday in Antigua then give Yepton a try...we are confident you will not be disappointed!!

Having booked Yepton for the first week of our 2 week holiday, we quickly committed to staying for our second week. The location is absolutely extraordinary. Surrounded by beautiful, natural wildlife it feels utterly secluded and yet within 10 minutes you can be in the centre of town or on one of Antigua's 365 stunning beaches. Hosts Gabriela and Douglas are entirely attuned to what you need as guests and take you along to the supermarket on your first morning and on a tour of St John's so that you're very quickly oriented. They also take you through a map of Antigua to ensure you're more confident on the - often bumpy! - roads. I would unreservedly recommend staying here as an alternative to the many All Inclusives on offer. It's stunning.

We arrived early Saturday evening. Gabriela (Gabby) had organized a rental car for us that was waiting at the airport. The car was great and we definitely recommend this option. Gabby provided excellent directions that got us to the cottage without a hitch, even though we were driving on the 'wrong' side of the road! Despite the pot holes, driving in Antigua is relaxed and a great place to learn to drive on the left. Yelling 'road hump', 'ditch', 'pothole' and 'dog' or 'cow' became an amusing game that we enjoyed immensely. This was all done to the sound of Christmas tunes from the Caribbean playing on the local radio stations. Even if we had gotten lost, all week Antiguans would as us 'Are you lost?' or 'Are you ok?' and it would have been no problem to get help.
When we got to Yepton, Gabby usually takes guests on a trip to the Supermarket pointing out sites along the way. We, however, had let her know that we wanted to go to Shirley Heights for the evening so her husband Douglas came and spoke with us immediately about how to get to Shirley heights. Without Douglas drawing extra round abouts, traffic lights and correcting turns, the map you get at the airport is largely unhelpful. He also helped us to find an app on our i phone that taps into a map of Antigua he drew himself. The app uses your phone's GPS (no data) to accurately place you on the map!
The cottage was a hundred times more than we had hoped for. Gabby and Doug have looked after your every convenience providing superb bread knives for the delicious epicurean bread, a cooler for trips to the many beaches, an ice maker, beach chairs and towels, an umbrella, a food processer, a cable to connect your ipod to the speakers... I could go on. Gabby will do any bookings you need but also provides you with a cell phone & small credit so that if anything does happens, you can contact them. You can also buy more credit.
Doug and Gabby are happy to make recommendations about where to go, what to eat and what to see. They really do want you to make the best of your time on the island so do take the time to ask.
We actually only made it to the beach at Yepton on our last day there. It was a spectacular beach, so if the rest of the beaches we had gone to weren't equally as spectacular we would have been disappointed. It was nice to have, however, for when you inevitably have that lazy beach day (or days)! If you don’t want to go anywhere at all, Yepton is on a salt water lagoon that you can fish in, they have a pool, lounge chairs for tanning and Gabby keeps wine for sale in her office. We loved sitting on our balcony in the mornings having breakfast, visiting with our resident finch, banana quit and salamander.
As far as getting around, we found Yepton to be wonderfully located. It is very close to Saint Johns (shopping, banks, food, groceries) and also near Jolly Beach and Harbour. Getting to English Harbour is further but the drives are beautiful and nothing to worry about, even at night.
Doug and Gabby are well connected, and if their friend happens to be in need of sailboat crew they will hook you up to go sailing for the day. Also - get Gabby to show you how to pick out ripe avocados and Passion fruit. You will never go wrong again!
While you are there you know someone cares and is watching out for your interests.

Room Tip: I can only imagine they are all perfect...

The are totally 4 very nice and clean cottages, although another 2 is under way. They are owned and maintained by Gabriela and her husband which lives in their house on site.

They will help you with everything! She will guide to you the supermarket and tell you about their different landmarks and places to go and eat on the island. If you don't have a rental she can fix that as well, also if you need help book any tours or need advise. Best hosts ever!

The cottage itself is very clean and homey. No blackout curtains, so if you are a bit sensitive be prepared to wake up early and listen to birds. There is a small pond just outside where you can see birds, ducks etc. beach is 5min walk.

The cottages are cleaned every four days, so you need to do some cleaning yourselves. Very good starting spot to driving around, to st johns around 15min, incl traffic. To jolly harbor 30min.

A week after my return from Yepton and I have yet to come back down to earth. This is a superb location and the cottages are delightful. I had a one bedroomed cottage all to myself that would be ample for two persons. Extremely well equipped with a lovely kitchen. Spotlessly clean on arrival and easy to keep that way.

As said in other reviews Gabriela and Douglas are the best hosts, I felt like family within minutes of my arrival. They are warm, kind people who are happy to help whenever required and take a personal interest in their guests. A vague mention of forgetting my binoculars and within hours a pair had been produced for me to use together with a bird book and guide to the plants of the island. Advice was given on the best beaches nearby and a list of available buses for me as a non car user. These are fun and cheap to use so worth a try if you don't fancy the drive into St Johns.

I stayed on my own as a lone female and felt safe throughout the six nights I was there. Security is not obvious but it is there and is effective including three adorable dogs with a mighty bark on them.

There is a lot to see and do but take time to sit on the terrace of your cottage late afternoon to watch the Frigate birds swoop over the lake, magical.

Room Tip: The two one bedroomed cottages overlooking the lake are the best.

First of all, we wanted to say a Massive Thank You to Gabriela and Douglas for the most wonderful stay as well as the sweetest, personal and genuine attention we have experienced at Yepton Cottages. For our time in Antigua we were looking to stay somewhere special, a place where we would feel comfortable and at home; Gabriela and Douglas gave it all to us and so much more!! In no specific order:
1) the location is just fantastic: relatively close to the main town, yet remote enough to feel away from the usual tourist traps, facing a beautiful private lake and only just 3 minutes walk to a magnificent secluded beach;
2) the bungalow was just the perfect combination of practical and simple, yet super cute and beautifully furnished, equipped with absolutely all the appliances and cooking utensils you might wish for, all modern and in top condition, including a great, big BBQ on the balcony: everything we could have wished for had been thought about and even more,
3) last but certainly not least, we have travelled a lot but we have never felt such a genuinely warm welcome from the time when we arrived, throughout our stay all the way to the end. Gabriela and Douglas gave us so much lovely and thoughtful attention, which we gratefully appreciated and made the world of a difference to our stay. We intentionally don’t want to disclose too much as some things are better left as the wonderful surprises they were to us, so we’ll leave it at that… but really, we couldn’t recommend Yepton Cottage more highly!! Enjoy your stay on the beautiful island of Antigua!

I cannot rate Yepton Cottages highly enough. My girlfriend and I are very regular travellers and stay at a wide variety of accomodation from Mongolian Gers to the 4 Seasons.

If you are looking for a retreat to relax and independently explore with friendly and hospitable hosts - this is the place for you. I should add that Gabriela and Douglas are helpul and engaging when you seek them out, but give you all the space you want!

Perhaps the best way to illustrate how relaxing this place is, is by saying what I was doing at the time. I was in the last few days of taking part in the sale of the business I work at. My girlfriend had recently told me she was pregnant. I was closing the purchase of my first house.

Within three hours of arriving, I'd unpacked (lovely cottage!), been taken to the supermarket and was BBQ'ing my dinner: I had unwound immediately!

The cottages are ridicuously well appointed - the self-catering kitchen was better stocked with gadgets and cooking equipment than the one I had at home! The BBQ was huge and the porch perfect for sitting out on.

Rent a car and the whole island is yours to explore at your leisure - Douglas helped us by giving some pointers which were all brilliant. The fishing in the lake is seriously good at dawn and dusk (they provided lines and lures - free of charge). It really was idyllic!

If you want to be chaperoned from your room to a pool, onto a coach for a group outing etc. this may not be the place for you, but If you have a smattering of independence, this place is heaven.

I make a point of never going back to somewhere I've been to before, as the world is a big and fascinating place. I will suspend this rule in this case, as truly relaxing places are far and few between. Thanks Gabriella and Douglas - a much needed break - top class :)

p.s. the 'studio' flats are not small! I originally wanted the seperate bedroom cottage, but we were not at all cramped when we got the studio, which I had worried about. Beds are super too.
