“Supermarket... not a restaurant!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2014

Upon our arrival at the airport, we asked our taxi driver to take us to a supermarket to get provisions for the week in our villa. Epicurean was the perfect place. Big well stocked modern place that carried everything that was on our list. They have a very good selection of wines and liquor. There cheese selection wasn't great, but adequate for our needs. As to price, I have nothing to compare it to. I would recommend Epicurean as a first stop upon arrival.

“Convenience at a price”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 25, 2014

Epicurean is a large gourmet supermarket by Caribbean standards. Fairly well stocked with a pleasant atmosphere and pretty good options for fresh produce, meats, and canned/bottled supplies. As with most Caribbean markets that I have shopped over the years, the options are limited by what is available. In this case, that meant no avacados, no fresh basil, no cilantro, and limited cheese and dairy options. Food Center on St Thomas just outside Red Hook is probably the best of all the markets I have shopped, but Epicurean comes close. The location is very convenient for boaters hauling in at Jolly Harbor and for those staying in the Sugar Ridge resort and villas (Villa Seaglass is one of those and is quite stunning!). Liquor prices are good and the ice supply never ran out. One thing to note: why do the check-out ladies have to be so surly? Seems this is SOP whever I have shopped in the Caribbean! Lighten up, ladies! If you have to work for a living, at least it's in paradise!

“Brilliant Supermarket”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2014

This supermarket had everything you needed and more, great variety of food, drink and a pharmacy, for sun tan lotion and after sun etc. There is also a small parade of shops the other side of the road for anything you couldn't find.

“The biggest, but......”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 8, 2014

This is the largest, and best stocked Supermarket, on the island, and, as with all Caribbean islands, most things are imported, therefore expensive.
With reference to the "Restaurant" - this is more a display of hot and cold , prepared dishes, such as Roti, Chicken pieces, and sandwiches. There are breads, and cakes, the best of which is Epicurean pudding (very heavy, best warmed in the Microwave, and quite cheap!).
The staff are not very friendly here, or at the smaller Epicurean, in Jolly Harbour.
As a Supermarket, we found most things cheaper at the "Bargain Centre", just off Valley Road, going into St. John's. This place is packed with local people, and the choice is much smaller, but the hot food available is very good. Never go shopping on a Tuesday, as it seems the deliveries arrive then, and are not on the shelves until later in the day, or next day. This is applicable to Epicurean, 1st. Choice, and The Bargain Centre.
We needed milk on a Monday evening, and bought the last available bottle(plastic), in the whole Epicurean store.
We were quite surprised how expensive fruit was. This island is so green, and fertile, they ought to be able to grow, and sell fruit, without importing it!!
